My 73,,66 journey ???
« on: March 28, 2020, 06:15:06 PM »
Why would I post about 73's & 66's here !!! It happened on this wise ,,,,,,, I have been looking for a 73 or a 66 I could afford ( limited income,, NONE !! ) or trade for. I already have a late 80's early 90's 92 Rossi 44-40 carbine in very good condition ( still tight ) and NO I didn't need another one ,BUT !! I came across a Rossi 92 w/ a 24" oct. barrel, curved but plate,, case colored , were talk'n " old west ",, w/ some problems,,,, it had been a 45 colt ,, and relined to 44-40 ,, ( had the button safety removed ) would not feed properly ,, hanged up ,,A LOT ,, plus a couple of other small glitches. 45lc rims are smaller than 44-40's ,???, no problem I says to myself ,, and the feller just didn't have time to really work on it  ;) and he made me a offer I thought was really fair  :o ,, fixed all the problems,, took it to the range ,, 10 rds. never left my shoulder ,nary a hick up,, and w/ the buckhorn w/elev. sight it hit to point of aim ( 40yds ) standing off hand. Holy Moly ,, smooth, accurate,, what's not like ( I don't need no stink'n 73-66 ) like it better than my carbine,, it's a keeper,, fired a total of 30 rds.  So since it is a " 92 " I posted here. ;D

All this typ'n made me dry ,, coffee's ready ,, Hootmix

Darn nice looking.  Now, that is what I am talking about.  But I would have lined it to a 38/40, because that's the only caliber I still desire to have in a long-gun.

I read your comments about issues in the original posting but I have a few questions --- Are you having any issues with rim diameter of the 45Colt bolt?  Any difficulty closing or ejecting?  Did the cartridge stop need altering with the wider rim?  Did the magazine hole in the receiver need widening for the larger 44 rim?

Just curious what you 'still' had to do to make it function properly from 45 to 44.

That a deal I wish I could fall into.  Hope you did get it for a goooood price with the work only partly done.

Enjoy that good looking RIFLE.

Very nice, and in a "proper" caliber for the rifle.

Good news, being a rare commodity these days, is very welcome.      The 44WCF is a very good cartridge and in the 1892 has a lot of potential.     I had a Japchester 1892 in 45 Colt with an oversize chamber and undersize bore.  After years of trying everything I and the internet could think of I sent it away.  I sent it to John Taylor for "gender reassignment surgery".   The barrel is now stamped 44WCF and I couldn't be happier with Mr Taylor's work, the rifle or the cartridge.

Congratulations and enjoy time with your new friend.
John Moses Browning and Teddy Roosevelt, we need you again !

John Taylor did the barrel work on this one , but it's still stamped " 45 colt " ???? As soon as I picked it up and held it , it just felt " right " . Thank you all.
