I will be hosting the 2018 Grand Muster, June 29 & 30 and July 1st, at my farm.
This Muster will be open to anyone in the GAF. If not currently a member I can help you register. (Membership in the GAF is free and easy) By using Google Earth and going to 41°40'16.24"N Latitude and 99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Grand Muster site. Registration forms will be available on the dispatches page of the Grand Army's Web site. Participation will be limited to 40 shooters. Registration is $80. Meals will be available on site from Delmonico. Those wishing to attend but not compete may do so without registration fee, but be sure to pay the meal fee if you plan to eat with us.
The planned activities include: a 3 stage GAF steel target main match, a Long Range Rifle match, a Precision Pistol match and a GAF Expansion Era Match. While 3 stages for the main match doesn't sound like much these four stages will be of the skirmish format and will feature about 20 knock down targets per stage. Stage design will recount scenes from Spanish American War of 1898. Round counts will be dependent on the number of times the shooter needs to shoot at each target to get it to fall. 100 rounds at least would be a good plan. This is a match that participants say truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
Shooters will be able to sight in their rifles on Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening. Sighting in your rifles for the distances used is STRONGLY encouraged.
Long Range Rifle will be 100-300yds. on armor so full power jacketed bullets are fine for it.
This muster will be a primitive camping event. We will have a tent city and I have tentage for about 10 individuals if you don't have your own contact me, I can help. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.
The average high temperature in this area on June 30th is around 87 degrees
I've attached a FAQ sheet and a suggested equipment list.
We expect to run 3 or 4 Squads shooting concurrently. Each squad will cycle through each of the 3 main match stages, the long range match and the sidearm match on Saturday. The Long Range Match and the Precision Pistol Match will each be treated as a stage. We will run ahead of schedule if possible. We should be finished shooting the match by Saturday evening with awards presentation Sunday morning; however, if we run behind we will finish up Sunday morning.
If you have a UTV/ATV that you would like to bring, you are welcome use it between stages.
The banquet will return to the Comstock Premier Lodge ( http://www.comstocklodge.com/ (http://www.comstocklodge.com/) ) for 2018 and the price of the banquet is included in your registration. If you are bringing a spouse or child who isn't a registered shooter the cost of an extra ticket for them is $15.00 Lodging is available at the lodge as well. If you are considering staying at the Comstock Lodge, don't wait too long to make reservations. I know at least one room was booked Saturday night for next year's muster. I've also reserved a block of rooms at the Wildlife Inn at nearby Taylor as well (308-942-6234) early registration is also suggested
-
Congratulations to Rick Ketchem, the first official registrant
Rick has already made room reservations as well.
-
If it's going to rain I'd take a tent, if not reserve me my usual room.
-
Congratulations to Rattlesnake Jack Robson, official registrant #2!
With as close to sold out as we were this year and as early as we've have registrations this year, it is entirely possible that we will sell out for the coming year. Don't wait too long folks!
-
I do hope to make it this next year.
And bring the wife as an Army nurse.
MSG Mustang Gregg LtCol (bvt)

Congratulations to Rattlesnake Jack Robson, official registrant #2!

Hi Jerry
How many IS sold out? I couldn't put in for vacation yet, it don't go that far. Just use last year's registration form?
Mike Schroeder
-
Yes, at this point, use last year's form. I'll get my adjutant going on the 2018 form; however, he's been having some health issues, so please be patient. It might be a while before he can get the updated form out.
Sold out threshold is 40.
-
The Registration form is attached here
-
I would ask all to go here: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,17271.0.html and read up on the class structure and regulations. There have been some changes, including a slight realignment of the Military Class Structure to better reflect History and usage. Cap and ball users should be pleased as well.
These reflect our post match staff meeting, as well as input from participants throughout the Muster. I thank everyone for their involvement and input.
D. C. Luetkemeyer, XO GAF.
-
Changes look good to me, I never could see excluding GEW98s. But, with a 60round limit, everyone's going to have to use only part of their double row mills belt.
-
...But, with a 60round limit, everyone's going to have to use only part of their double row mills belt.
I don't think it'll be that big a deal. Even before the change I only ever put 65 in my belt
-
Good excuse to go to groups of 5.
-
In case anyone is wondering, in the skirmish format there's really no advantage in speed to repeaters over single shots. We've checked the times over several years, and it comes down to how many times you miss. As the saying goes, you can't miss fast enough!
-
No advantage to repeaters? You mean to tell me I've been wasting my time with these newfangled repeaters?!? General Ripley was right all along! :D
-

Not our format, but always a fun watch.

Well there you go-repeaters are a waste of time.
OK, this is no sh@@, but, ;D one of my Army Drill Sergeants, (the only Infantryman of them all, and yes I know, most people are entirely too clever to join the Infantry :D) once said, and I quote-"Myself, I prefer the old trapdoor Springfield. "
Of course, I did not question his statement, because, well, he could get really freaky really fast! Weeeee!!! :D
-
He probably like to be able to look thru 'em after shooting them. And one never questions the Drill Sergeant.
(But damn! What I would not give to know the story behind that statement . . .)
-
He was a Sergeant First Class, Vietnam vet. I learned a lot from him.
And one never questions the Drill Sergeant.
Ha Ha! Well, I wonder what kinds of things might happen if one did Colonel?! :D

-
You realize, of course, there are probably still grown men who still have nightmares concerning you..........
-
Ha Ha! Well, I wonder what kinds of things might happen if one did Colonel?
For starters. pushups, and lots of them!
-
Nightmares and push-ups!
No wonder we like to drink! :D

Just to recap the Pre, Post-1886 Category rule change; 1886 is considered the date smokeless came into common usage. If you shoot a rifle designed pre-1886 but shoot it with smokeless powder, you are shooting in the Post-1886 class. This rule is meant to encourage shooters to use the propellant that the cartridge was designed around. THIS ONLY APPLIES TO THE MIULITARY CLASSES. Civilian classes and the Expansion Era matches are unchanged.

Sooo, for Expansion era, is an 1886 Winchester pre or post? Mainly cause I DO have one.
Thanks
-
I believe all the non-military classes will be the same as always. Your '86 would be Militia, I believe.
-
Yep, the 1886 is a Militia class weapon, no change there. This only affects Victorian Military Specification rifles. Expansion era is unchanged. Civilian classes are unchanged.
1886 is the Date the French introduced the Mle 1886 Lebel, the 1st Smokeless military rifle fielded. Nearly all military rifle designs subsequent to this were intended for the use of Smokeless/semi Smokeless powder. There are a very few Transitional rifles from this period that will be handled on a case by case basis. The early Mannlicher wedge locks come to mind.
-
So, will the rifles still be divided into single shot and repeater in their respective categories?
-
So, will the rifles still be divided into single shot and repeater in their respective categories?
Bat, I'm sure you're only asking this question for clarification, because why the hell would someone who can successfully engage all the rifle targets, a(at rifle ranges) with a sidearm be concerned? It is wonderful to watch by the way!
-
No, the only division will be year and powder type. But only for the Military Rifle classes. All others are unchanged. http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,17271.0.html

Hi
So, if I shoot 1911 handgunner in the Expansion era match, I can carry 80 rounds of 45 ACP because I get 60 rounds of rifle, and 20 rounds of pistol (all goes in the same 1911). I could shoot a 1903 Springfield like Bat did in the long range portion of the match, but I don't have one. What limitations on long range rifles would be in the expansion era match?
Later
-
Yes, that is correct.
Long range rifles use full power ammunition, you get 15 rounds, with 3 hits required on successive 100-200-300 yard targets each. The rifle should be the same era as your Skirmish gun, if not the same gun. In the expansion match, all guns are from the 1900-1916 time frame.
The Expansion era handgunner has an almost unlimited rifle selection, as long as he can reasonable justify its use with his persona. The 1911's natural rifle would be the 1903. But a battlefield pickup could be most any small ring mauser, or rolling block, both heavily used in the phillipines. Marines in China in 1900 picked up "Commission" 1888 rifles. An officer involved in the China Relief Expedition of 1900 (Boxer Rebellion) could possibly claim a rifle "acquired" from any of the nations involved! A civilian "Fillibuster" persona could use a Winchester 30-30.
The Boxer Rebellion is a treasure trove of weapon possibilities, and its 1900 date means it can be used for both the Victorian Main Match and the Expansion era match.
I've thought of passing as a Masters Mate off the SS Gussie, a well known gunrunner in Cuban Waters, wielding a Webley Top Break and a Mauser 91 bought in the weapons black market of Buenos Aires . . . In fact, come to think of it, I'll do exactly that for this weekends "Hi-wye-an floweredy shirt match" at my local SASS club (which has a military category just for us GAF types.)

After a great time last year don't plan on missing next year. Question I plan on shooting my trap door but as Spanish Am War period. I would think they still shoot black power. But that is passed the the post 1886 date so can I load trailboss? Lots of time to load either.
-
You can load either. The period you portray has nothing to do with it. It is only a means to classify the rifle. If you shoot smokeless in the Trapdoor, you will be classed as a smokeless powder military rifle.
The rule only works one way: All we're really saying is if you have a rifle that was designed for Smokeless (say, a Krag) you cannot load it with Black powder and be classed with Black powder rifles. Black powder designed rifles (Trapdoors, etc) may use either powder, but will be classed accordingly.
I would reccomend BP loading: It is correct for your portrayal, and you will be classed with other BP rifles.

Expect to hear "A peculiar drumming sound" coming from the vicinity of San Juan Hill.
:)
-
"Its the Gatling men! Our Gatling!"
-
Will start coordinating with Col Strong to get "it" on the supply wagon going west.
Msgt Long
-
Per Col. Paul Rosewitz (the worlds foremost authority on the Mountain Howitzer), during the Indian war era Gatling guns were paired up with Mountain Howitzers.
If the Gatling is coming I will bring the Mountain Howitzer.
Books
-
Cool! Then we'll have two! And a Gatling!
-
It'll be "Hot Time in the Old Town
To those Nights ;)
-
Anyone got a Colt tater digger?
-
I've got a plan for a .22LR version if someone would donate a Ruger 10/22 action. It would work great on the quarter scale Blunt targets we have.
-
And you should see the targets he's built this fall! :o 8)
-
If the Gatling is coming I will bring the Mountain Howitzer.
Books
So does this mean you are definitely coming? That's Awesome!
I have confirmed that unless something completely unforeseen happens, the Gatling will be at the 2018 Grand Muster and will be a guest gun on the San Juan Hill stage. This means each participant will put one full magazine through the Gatling, mowing down as many of the stage targets as possible with it.
If you needed added incentives to make the trip to central Nebraska, I would think this would be it.
-
I just put it on the calendar. They have to live without me at the Lodge Fireworks stand.

How do you propose getting that arm under the barrel to attach and operate? It just wouldn't be a Potato Digger with out the arm, that gave the gun it's nickname slapping back and forth out there.
You can't have my 10-22, it looks like a Thompson now. http://www.1022fungun.com/store/ (http://www.1022fungun.com/store/)
-
I know that was a pretty iconic feature, but we'll just have to live without that, I'm afraid.
-
Reckon I should get me some reservations somewhere!! Did not get in touch with Col Strong this weekend as too much stuff piling up and Honey wanting my company. So will set a date to meet with him and work out arrangements to get "IT" on the wagon. Oh yes will mail off registration tomorrow if I don't forget again!!
Msgt Long
-
For only $5000 you could have a real potato digger, well sort of, it just a display gun.

Hi, somehow I think all of us would like to get this part filmed. Watching an old man with a gut waddling through tall grass with a Sharps ain't that picturesque, but a Gatling...

Just made my reservations in Burwell and barring any unforeseen instances, "The Gun" should make the trip with me for this muster. I will get together with Doug in the near future and set up a date to pick it up. As Amy is home, for now, I'll wait a couple of weeks before bothering him.
For the gee whiz file, little sporting shop in Beloit has been stocking factory 30/40. I reduced their inventory down to 3 boxes!!
Happy New Year!!

I had a nice conversation with Emily at the Comstock Lodge this afternoon and made a reservation for Friday and Saturday night during the Muster. My "better half" is coming for the main match and Banquet and I didn't think she would like to bunk with Quickfire and I in his tent. As of today Emily said she has a couple of rooms left, one being the room with four single beds that a bunch of guys could get together and share.

I spoke with Emily yesterday and with Ira Scott's registration at the Comstock, there are only 2 rooms left. If you need one I recommend you call soon. One of the available rooms is the bunk room.

-
I just had to look it up...
https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/flotsam-jetsam.html
"Flotsam and jetsam are terms that describe two types of marine debris associated with vessels. Flotsam is defined as debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam describes debris that was deliberately thrown overboard by a crew of a ship in distress, most often to lighten the ship's load. The word flotsam derives from the French word floter, to float. Jetsam is a shortened word for jettison."
-
Well, that's the traditional meaning but Flotsam and Jetsam are also the nick names given to two surfer cop characters in Joseph Wambaugh's latest Hollywood Station series of cop novels (if you've never read any of this guys stuff he's great, although you may need to understand cop personalities to really get a belly laugh out of it):
http://www.josephwambaugh.net/ (http://www.josephwambaugh.net/)
Two ell's in The little Mermaid:
http://little-mermaid.wikia.com/wiki/Flotsam_and_Jetsam (http://little-mermaid.wikia.com/wiki/Flotsam_and_Jetsam)
And it looks like it may be a heavy metal band as well:

John I sent a PM
I'd like to see if the French Frog might work for my Berthier bayonet scabbard

She who must be obeyed wants to make the Nebraska trip this year!!!! Will check to see if Shirley our nurse friend from Minnesota will make the trip down. Rumor has it Anne's sister is going to chase us over in her car and then go to OK to see their brother in Snyder after the Muster. Anne and I will prolly head to Montana and AK after the shooting gets done and the steel gets put away. I hope to be there Monday or Tuesday to help set up.
Winter Range set up starts Tuesday, I get to be Delmonico for the set up crew and cook for 70 Plus folks. I cheat and actually buy 2 meals one pizza and the other fried chicken the rest I cook but use turkey roasters and propane camp stoves vs dutch ovens
3 March will be finished and all the gear cleaned and stored then can start working on loads.
Will the long range targets stand up to Silver tip Romanian 7.62 x 54 ammo or do I need to use straight fmj?

Nothing I've shot them with has even dimpled them. I'm sure we could find loads that would, I just haven't so far.
-
Silver tip is Steel Core Light ball. Should not be a problem.
-
I've shot at them with factory .375 H & H loads, and only made marks in the paint. That was at fifty yards, too. You'll be fine!
-
The registrations are starting to roll in. We've received several from new shooters and a couple from folks who've missed a couple of years.

Mailed my entry yesterday, will be arriving Wed. 27 afternoon. will bring UTV.

Whiskey looks plenty salty with a Long Tom.

We're looking like we'll be close to 50 this year.
-
Looks like my friend Ron Jones of Lincoln is coming up to help me. He's off work till after the muster, but he hobbled in the other night and bought his lottery tickets on his new knee.
I'll have him bring his Tommy hatchets and stuff in case anyone wants to learn or play with them.
-
Oh, in case he wins the big one can a C-130 be landed at the Sargent airport?
We're still trying to decide if he should buy or just charter, Mary his wife says she's cool with it as long as we get a proper pilot in case Lucy their Basset Hound wants to tag along. ;D
-
Oh, in case he wins the big one can a C-130 be landed at the Sargent airport?
I don't know. You can land a Lear here.
-
I keep thinking they should replace the "jet plane" airport sign there with one of a crop duster.
-
We're in, he ain't called me yet to let me know he got the big one last night.
-
We're at 32 officially registered. There are 13 more who always come and/or I know have motel reservations. Looks like it will be the biggest one yet. We might even sell out. :o
-
If you can land a C130 on an aircraft carrier unarrested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM5AI3YSV3M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM5AI3YSV3M) the Sargent airport with a 50 Ft. wide 3000 Ft. long paved runway should be a walk in the park.
-
It helps if the airport is doing 30 knots into the wind at the time . . .

Received my order from River Junction...shirt, bandanna, hat and ammo belt. Now I just need a holster and I'm ready for the charge!

Well looks like I lost one camp follower, Anne's sister is now planning to go to Oklahoma directly from AZ. Shirley should be there for part of the time anyway.

For all who are wondering, The Doc and I will be seating Gigi on 25 June. Rolling to Ne on 26 June and plan on checking in at Taylor on 27 June. That is the plan... so far.

Woops! Seems like the Dear Spousal Unit may be interested in attending with me this year. Or maybe she's just concerned that only her car can make the trip... ::) I'll try calling Linden Tree tomorrow, and see if it's available. I'm sure Comstock is full up already. One question-she can't survive long without her internet ::) ::) ::). She's got an I pad Mini, but we've never had any kind of data plan with it, just use it where there's wireless available. I don't even know if this one can use ATT, Verizon or whatever. What will work up at camp?
-
I'll try calling Linden Tree tomorrow, and see if it's available. I'm sure Comstock is full up already.
I think the Comstock is full but you can always call them. You wouldn't be out much. If both are full you might try the Shepard's Inn at Ord.

I use Verizon. If your I-pad doesn't have a sim card you could probably use your phone as a mobile wireless hotspot.
-
The new props are coming along.
Looks like there will be 41 of us.(3 of those won't be actually shooting)
-
Will you be posting a roster?
-
Well I lost both the extraneous camp followers just she who must be obeyed will come. Also leaving dogs home this year. Took 5er in today to get wheel bearing repacked. Noticed tail lights not working turn signals and break lights work just not tail and clearance lights. Having checked out. Suspect corroded contacts on the power cord. All contacts on truck look good. Leave in 6 days for NE. Spending some time in Grand Junction and Monday night in Fort Collins will arrive Sargent Tuesday PM

You missed Micah. ;)
BTW, picked up Micah's GAF pistol this morning. It is a Traditions/Pietta SAA 5 1/2" barrel .38sp/.357 Mag with a transfer bar.

Sorry, I've corrected that and made a couple of other additions

I see a couple of new names I recognize from Texas ....
Blue Bonnet
Blue Eyed Caballero
These two are fine fellows, fast and accurate, too. I look forward to shooting with them (again).
Miss(issippi) Red will be shooting, too. We have our guns, ammo, and clothing ready. I'm working on some accoutrements...finishing up a military flap holster and a cartridge pouch, and hopefully will get a holster or another leather item or two ready for door prizes.
Miss Red and I will arrive Wednesday night. We may make it to the camp that evening, but definitely will be at the camp on Thursday.
Keep your powder and feet dry....
-
I met, and shot with Blue Bonnet (Spearman?) and Blue Eyed Caballero at the National NCOWS shoot in Indiana. Aside from being from Texas, they do indeed seem like some fine fellows!

I'm not from Texas myself...but I got here as quickly as I could!

Got the framed sheepskin too ! :)

So as it stands now, I will be accompanied by the family for this assignment. Have reservations at the Rodeo Inn in Burwell for Friday and Saturday evening. Will depart from home early( Yeah, right) Thursday morning. IF we arrive in camp on Thursday evening, we'll camp for one night. Then , after the morning Expansion stage, and probably lunch, off to the hotel to check in.

I forget do chiggers inhabit the farm?

I forget do chiggers inhabit the farm?
I have not gotten any while there.
Slim
-
I don't remember ever getting any bites there, from either ticks or chiggers.
Main match and Expansion Era ammo loaded. If I have time, I'll load some also for the "war trophy" captured Spanish Mauser. No time for working up loads, just pick one from the book, fire 3 rounds to check for function, and fill 'em up.

I forget do chiggers inhabit the farm?
YES, but so far this year they don't seem as bad.
-
We've had a hellava crop here in North Texas. Between scratching secessions we play connect the dots! Witnesses say that the big ones throw hands full of little ones at cha as you walk by. I picked up several last year at Muster. Fresh can of repellant is already in my kit.

Bluegrass has a song for everything . . .
Well, this year I made a garden, cause I heard the coons were starving
and they kindly left a thing or two for me.
So, I was out picking beans, when I felt something in my jeans
and it was uninvited insect company.
Seed Tick Blues tuck your pant inside your shoes.
It's hard to fight what I can hardly see.
I'd take Scorpions and Spiders over them little ankle biters.
Winter can't come soon enough for me.
Well I snuck off to the creek with my sweetheart, just last week.
We skinny-dipped, and then came out to dry.
On that grassy bank we laid just like two pigs in the shade.
Now, the only thing that don't itch is my eyes.
Seed Tick Blues I've got no more blood to lose.
I'm all wrapped up in gauze and Calamine.
It holds me inside, 'cause I've scratched off all my hide.
Now, if I can live till winter I'll be fine.
Yes, there's lots of things today, that help keep those bugs at bay.
But those ticks are getting smart and getting bold.
And it won't be long I figger they'll start breeding with the chigger.
Then, it won't be safe to come out till it's cold!
Seed Tick Blues, I can't knock those dang things loose.
So, dip me in that Lindane, once again.
I keep Permanone real handy eat Diazanon like Candy.
But them suckers, are still chewing on my skin.
(Tag) I say them Parasites are chewing on my skin.

Guess I'll be packing and making sure I don't forget anything this evening, then the maintenance will be even more "last minute" tomorrow after work. Still hoping to leave early Thursday morning, arrive Thurs evening.
