Allowed Sights For NCOWS Rifle Side Matches
« on: December 16, 2018, 07:30:58 PM »
I am working my way to getting another 1874 Sharps. I could not see the front sights well on my first one. What long-range side match sights are NCOWS compliant?

I use a MVA rear sight. For the front sight I have Ukranian with a spirit level that has changeable
inserts. I almost always use an apeture. Some of our older guys have went to the original style
scopes that have 4X power, but remember your bullet still flys in a rainbow trajectory, so you have to
adjust the scope.

The key words are 'period correct' or 'as would have been available prior to 1900.' Modern reproductions are acceptable but, you should do enough research and have documentation at hand should your choice of sights be questioned at the match. Don't ask me why I know this. But at the time, it was suggested that unless presented to the Authenticity Committee for approval that I should not return the next year with my rifle so equipped. There are many reprints of period catalogs available from Cornell Publications. www.cornellpubs.com  Reprints of the Winchester 1875, Colts 1888 and the Winchester 1895 catalogs have several pages of target sights available at the time. Many reproductions of those cataloged sights are available today. A few years later I used these catalogs to document my Originals character firearms and accessories. Sadly at the time I competed in the long range match at the Nationals I did not have these historical publications. But then again, I took first place and have never returned with that rifle or competed at the the long range Nationals match. As of late on side match day I find myself selling t-shirts and previously tested shot glasses. Just remember to hold center and don't let those somewhat myopic Gentlemen scare you off.

Thanks. I ordered the old Sharps 1878-1879 catalog and the 1895 Winchester catalog for research.

I believe the word used was older, not old. So possibly older than 21, or older than 45,
or in my case older than 58. So feel as young as you are Charlie.
