As we gear up for our upcoming matches and make plans to enjoy our 4th of July holiday tomorrow, this is a good time to reflect on what that date really means and why we observe it. To most folks today, especially young people, July 4th means a holiday, with lots if food, fireworks, and no work. When the Founders signed the Declaration of Independence, they committed treason against the king. They fully expected to be hunted down and hanged, if they were caught. In fact, many were hunted, run out of their homes into the wilderness, their homes burned, and some never saw their children again. A very nasty and bloody war followed right here at home. While we observe July 4th and celebrate with our families, let’s remember the sacrifices made by the Founders and patriots who fought for us to have the freedom we enjoy in America today, including to be able to shoot matches. Let’s make sure our young’uns know what it means, too.
