Title: are plated bullets allowed? Not JACKETED
Post by: Whitehorse Lane on March 21, 2022, 01:02:42 PM
My question is this, as I search for Hollow Base wadcutters..
If you need a hollow base wadcutter for a ""38" with a .379 bore, say a conversion pistol or early Colt Double actions, would a brass PLATED lead projectile be acceptable?

Thanks in advance

Brass plated soft lead hollow-based wadcutter?

I did not know such a critter existed.

Stick with unplated HBWC. Plated could be confused with jacketed.

Berry's Superior Plated Bullets 38 Caliber (357 Diameter) 148 Grain Plated Hollow Base Wad Cutter

Berry's bullets are swaged from a custom alloyed lead for uniformity, then plated to final weight and put back in a carbide die to be re-struck to the desired final dimension. Berry’s lead bullets are totally enclosed in 100% pure copper plating to cut down on airborne lead and reduce fouling, while costing much less than jacketed projectiles. When you choose Berry's, you choose a family run business centered on exceptional quality, friendly customer service. This is not loaded ammunition.

I don't think they would make shrapnel like jacketed

I'm guessing the OP's reference to "brass-plated" lead bullets was a typo.

The most common commercially available article is "copper-plated".

Copper-plated lead bullets are prohibited in CAS-competitions because they cannot be readily distinguished from copper-jacketed bullets.

What is allowed in CAS is "powder-coated" lead bullets.
They usually come in all other colors except "brass", "copper" or "golden", and can be readily identified.
The powder-coating does the same job as the copper-plating, especially at CAS-velocities.

Finally I'll add that neither copper-plated nor powder-coated bullets look "cowboy", in my opinion.

I’ve unfortunately shot with ‘cowboys’ who didn’t look “cowboy” too, imo.

Have to keep reminding ourselves within NCOWS, there are so many occupations and personas to portray other than "Cowboy".  :) ;)

I have some of these Berry's that I load for my EDC snubnose. They are anything but soft. They are a hard alloy with a very heavy copper plating. In fact, they are hard enough, and heavily plated enough, I am not convinced they would obturate enough to fill the bore of a conversion 36 caliber percussion. It would be best to stick with the swaged lead HBWC like the Speer. Liink at Midway

Out of stock most places, as are so many things these days. so it may take some looking. Another option is to mould and load 38 heeled bullets. The drive bands on those are .375 (this is what I do). You can get all you need for this at Old West Bullet Moulds.
