I bought a rifle to go under a scope.

Yup, some time back came across a Leupold Vari-X 2x7 scope at a garage sale. Got the scope for $15! It's in great shape but I had nothing to mount it on. Well, the other day a very nice Savage 111 came into the shop and still had the cheap Bushnell scope on it. So I put the rifle on layaway and am looking forward to giving it a good scope. Gotta dig out my 270 dies. Man, I always wanted a 270 thanks to Jack O'Connor's writing.

Can't go wrong with a 270 and that is an excellent match with that scope.  Good luck and good hunting.

Indeed, it does make perfectly good sense.

While not a scope, I have made purchases that lead me down a path.
Not knowing at the time, that was a direction to the greater good.

Spending more on a scope than the rifle is a perfectly rational choice.
