Mauser Safety lever issue
« on: April 07, 2020, 03:36:28 PM »
I'm having an issue with my Spanish Mauser , the safety lever will not turn, it seems to be locked in the off position.
It will not turn vertical or beyond to off.
The photo is the bolt as it is presently.

Anyone have any ideas  ?

Are you trying to move it while the rifle isn’t cocked?

To inspect the bolt remove it from the rifle and find a good square edge on a bench to catch the lug that the sear in gages. Use this to press the bolt back to full cock and engage the safety. That will allow you to unscrew the shroud and firing pin from the bolt body. Note you need to press in the plunger as you turn the shroud the first few turns. Then press the firing pin down on a piece of wood so the cocking piece can turn to remove. This cocking piece can be easily be modified to allow the safety to engage. It will only require a small amount of metal removal to make it work.

So the issue was the safety would not turn , but as it turns out if I put downward thumb pressure toward the wrist ( not pull back ) on the cocking piece

and viola ...safety engaged  Woo hoo !   Now I could disassemble the bolt  and did ...found it pretty gunky in cosmoline.

after a good cleaning , I discover the shaft on my safety is galled note: photo

It should look like the one I ordered below
when it arrives I will install and I believe that minute of play in mine gone, will solve my problem

thanks

 :D  Major 2   :D

Before trashing the old safety, first, with some 400 Wet/Dry, clean it up a bit and then with some 2000 wet/dry give it a good polish and reassemble for a test run.  Just to keep a spare on hand.  If you keep a spare, you'll never need it (Murphy's 3rd)

I said that very thing ....you are not the first to suggest polishing

I'm looking for a Firing pin as spare too ....

The new (to me ) replacement safety was the bomb solved the problem.
as a bonus ...my old safety was polished and the markings/ss# scrubbed

The new replacement has about 70% original blue and as a lucky coincidence the 84 matches my bolts last two numbers  :)
