Title: CCW guns
Post by: PJ Hardtack on January 14, 2017, 08:44:04 PM
Who carries what as a licenced CCW permit holder?

We don't have CCW laws here in Canuckistan, but if  we did, I know what I'd be packing - either my S&W M66 2-1/2" snubby or it's M19 brother in blue.

I started shooting IDPA (a game predicated on US CCW laws) with my 1911s, but to keep a newbie revolver friend company, I started using my M66 4". Then the M66 snubby came along and I discovered the ideal IDPA gun for me.

The M19 snubby caught my eye at a price I couldn't refuse so .... well, you know how it goes. It has had an action job done by someone who knew his craft. Silky smooth DA to the point where you don't even think about SA.

Shooting against the 9mm "spray & pray" crowd is a ball. Yes, they have faster times, but I rarely hit less than "0" down on my targets. Reloads are another matter, but no COF can exceed 18 rds, making them 'revolver friendly'. Our laws restrict semi-autos to 10 rd mags, so there is no real advantage. If you've ever fumbled a mag change, you know what I mean.

If we had CCW in Canada I would be carrying my S&W 686 4"bbl .357 mag.  I prefer a wheel gun over semi autos.  I remember carrying the Browning 9mm in a closed holster in the Air Force.  After you fumbled it out of the holster, you had to take the safety off then rack it. After I was CFR'd I was issued a Colt Cobra in .38 spl.  it was open holster and a lot quicker to get into firing position but, I rarely carried it.

Just as a humorus aside, when I was a young buck Air Force Policeman working midnight shift, it was on a nuclear base and during the winter we carried our 9mm pistol in our parka pocket.  I found the Officer's Mess unlocked.  Doing the internal check I saw a bowl of fruit and I took a banana and put it in my parka pocket (I was on ration strength so it was legal) with the 9mm and then forgot about it.  After a night of in and out of the vehicle, and at the end of the shift when I took my pistol out of the pocket it was jammed full of banana.  Bandana up the barrel, banana in the internals.....well, you kind of get the picture.

Ah!  The good old days.... gone forever.

Vintage (pre lock) nickel model 36 Chief’s Special is my favored choice every day.
1 round disadvantage I know, but I prefer the less printability profile in casual Florida climate clothing.
Revolver reliability is another reason, I have considered a Model 60 , and may get one just for the Stainless, but so far the nickel has served well & faithful.

On rare occasion, like in the State management areas ( My Wife works for the State Wildlife Management )
my go to is a 1911 , but the little 36 is in my pocket as well.

Just beginning with carrying-since Jan 1st we have so called "Constitutional Carry" in Mo, no permits needed. There's usually a Ruger LCP in my coat pocket. Haven't worked out yet what I will do when it gets warmer.

Canadian female Military Police were issued the S&W Chiefs Special 5 shot in .38 in 1974 and were still using them when I retired in '87.

I didn't think that the safety could be applied on an uncocked Inglis Hi-Power.

I've got a nice little S&W M60 with a "banana grip" that I really like, but I don't shoot it and can't use it in IDPA as you need a 6 rd capacity. It would be an ideal CCW. There is enough of a handicap in the game without being down one round. I'm considering trading it off on a M63 in .22LR.

I shot a three rd group with the M60 at 15 yds that was well under the size of a dime. Kept that target for years.

Commander slide officer frame 1911 in 38 Super.  If I am going to a 'gun free zone'  that day, a S&W M&P 9C works as well.

My goal this year is to get a CCL.   So this is good information for me.

As best I can tell, it is going to require me to have some wardrobe changes (and loosing a few lbs would help too!) to conceal a handgun of a good defense caliber and capacity.  I do like revolvers, and I have a S&W Model 60 that belongs to my ex-mother-in-law (long story, I've been baby sitting it for over a decade since she moved to  Massachusetts...I should go ahead and buy it from her!).  It is concealable in the front pocket of loose pants, but not very easily accessed.  This has lead me to considering sub-compact autos such as a Sig 938, Ruger LC9 (it think this is the model designation for the 9 mm) or Springfield XDs.

At the very least, I'll get a NAA mini revolver and put it in my front pocket...better to have and not need, than to not have and need!

I own a M60 and i think that you'll find carrying it in a front pocket is not going to be very comfortable. The gun will also be exposed to a lot of pocket lint, etc. You want that gun to WORK when you need it!

There is a plethora of good CCW holster design out there. You may have to experiment a little to find one that works for you. Holster suitability is a totally subjective thing. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another.

I'd fire a few of the small frame pocket pistols first before deciding which way to go. You aren't looking to be in a prolonged gunfight so magazine capacity need not be a determining factor.

Good points PJ...I plan to visit the local range and rent some of the sub compacts, and lean on some friends to let me try some of theirs.  I fired a Springfield XDs in 45 acp several years ago when they came out.  I was fairly impressed with the size and power, but I had some failures to go to battery.  I was fairly new to the game, so it may have been me limp wristing the gun.  I'll revisit it.

I love my revolvers, but for CC I always carry my S&W Bodyguard 380.  The little pocket 380's will always be flatter and they hold a couple more rounds than the typical 5 shot 38 special revolver.

The main thing is to get a good belt and holster.  I am fairly slim, can carry a full sized 1911 with just a button down shirt over a t-shirt as a cover garment.  The smaller pocket guns are OK, but not what I would choose.

Jason Winnie makes my carry holsters.  Good product at a decent price.  Bought a lot of holsters before I found what works best for me.

I've been carrying since 2004 when CCW was passed in Ohio. I've had various carry guns, right now it's the Ruger LC9s in 9mm!! 8)

It depends, if I am dressed up for an appointment or social occasion, I usually carry a Colt Mustang .380 in a Sneaky Pete under my jacket.  For daily carry in jeans and vest, I carry either a holstered 2 inch, Model 60, .38 Spec+P or a 3 inch, Model 60, .357 Mag.

Colt Government .380 or an old battle-weary Star 43 in 9mm.

Once in awhile just for s---s and giggles I carry my "new" S&W 38SA second model in .38 S&W / .38 Short Colt / British .30-200.  It's safe with all five chambers loaded and is about equivalent to the .380... which is carried simultaneously.  It's just a touch of the past, but not a serious CCW piece.

Cold weather gun is a 1911 .45.

PJ  I may have used the wrong term.  I called it the safety but it was the slide which has two notches on the left side that can be used to lock the slide open with the push up button or, the rear one for preventing the slide to rack.  It has been 48 years since I operated the Browning.  That was when I was issued the Colt Cobra.

Just as an aside, when they brought female MP's back into the trade in 1973, they issued them the S&W Chiefs Special 5 shot in .38 spl.  I could never understand why they would give a front line MP a 5 shot revolver.  It would make an acceptable CCW firearm.

I have no idea what firearms MP's carry today.

Post by: PJ Hardtack on January 19, 2017, 11:18:57 AM
You might be referring to the slide stop lever which can be manually operated or automatically when the gun is shot dry.

The current service pistol is still the Ingis Hi-Power along with some Sig P226s in the mix. An Afghanistan vet told me that "they were handing out pistols like candy over there", with next to no training. People who never set foot outside the wire looked cool having coffee at Timmy's Kandahar outlet.

I had a commercial model during my 12 years service so I aced qualification with the issue pistol. At the Arctic Warfare School in Churchill, Manitoba, I was gifted with a 5000 rd case of ball ammo and burned it up on the tundra getting to know the gun very well. Shot it for years later in IPSC.

There is talk now of a replacement for the Inglis Hi-Power, the Glock a strong contender. God help us! A plastic framed pistol designed to be fool proof in the hands of fools. What could go wrong? Remember what happened when police departments started issuing Glocks?

There is little to no chance of the BHPs being sold off as surplus, but that doesn't account for the number of them already in civilian hands. They can't ALL be stolen guns.

My goal this year is to get a CCL.   So this is good information for me.

As best I can tell, it is going to require me to have some wardrobe changes (and loosing a few lbs would help too!)

I'm in the same boat-I typically just wear jeans and t-shirt, or polo type shirt for more "dress" occasions, shirt tails tucked in. If I stick with that, I'm pretty limited to an inside waistband tuckable holster. I can forsee that such a rig might get pretty uncomfortable in 90+ degree Missouri humidity. The LCP fits fine in a pocket, but with my jeans, eventually about everything I carry in my pockets starts leaving a "mark" on the material, it's obvious by the wear patterns what I carry in which pocket. Pocket knife right front, cell phone left front...

Ruger LC9 (it think this is the model designation for the 9 mm) or Springfield XDs.

Yup, LC9 is the 9mm. I have no experience with it, only it's little brother, the LCP. so far, I have had no failures with it, but I haven't shot a lot of rounds through it. It's not what you might call a "fun" gun!

At the very least, I'll get a NAA mini revolver and put it in my front pocket...better to have and not need, than to not have and need!

I have put quite a few rounds through an LC9, both FMJ and various self defense HPs and it seems to be a "rugged reliable firearm" as advertised by Ruger. Only slightly larger than the LCP, but I the 9MM is considered a more effective self defense round. That being said there a .45 ACP autos that are only slightly larger that the LC9 with another increase in power. So the choice comes down to most concealable, less bad guy stopping power, and most bad guy stopping power, 500S&W, not as concealable! But as Troy said it's way better to be carrying anything than nuttin!

3" Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special for CC-

But, we've also had Open Carry for a little over a year now. About the only time I OC is when I'm wearing the rig, working around the place and have to run into town for something. I usually leave it on because I'm too lazy to take it off before I go into the store.

I am a retired California LEO, so I have CCW privileges. For Every Day Carry, I carry a S&W M&P Shield in 9mm.  With the Mag-guts +2 conversion in my mags, I have 10+1 of 9mm, less than 1/4" longer than the factory 8 rounder.  It is loaded with Speer Gold Dot 124 +P Gold Dot (NYPD load) for about 360 ft lbs ME, even from the short barrel.

I retired my CZ 83 and Bersa 380 when I switched to the Shield.  It is so compact and light, I forget I am waring it in a leather IWB holster.  I also occasionally carry (when I go to LA or SF areas) my trusty Glock 19 (2nd gen) that I have carried since 1994, when I used it as an LEO.

Today I bought my third S&W .357 2-1/2" snubby, a M19. Companion piece for my other snubby M19 and M66.

I don't live in a country that allows CCWs but I shoot these guns in IDPA. If I COULD carry, one of these would be my constant companion.

I realize this is a dinosaur of a thread.... :-\ But thinking this is still relevant.

My taste has changed .I was carrying a S&W Mod.36 or an alternative 2" Model 60

But just a few days ago I acquired a Sig 365 , it was one of those planets align buys.
I am completely gob struck with the compact 10 shot 9mm.
10 rounds of 9MM Luger in a piece smaller than a Glock 43 single stack.
Ergonomics are just right for my hand, and recoil is quite mild because of the fit.

I too switched to a P365 a few months ago. It is a near perfect CCW pistol. It's comfortable to shoot, accurate, easy to control and concealable. I find myself liking it more and more. Now, there have been reports of QC and breakage issues, particularly with early production guns, but mine has been completely reliable. Good choice!

There's an old saying, "No gun too big to shoot or too small too carry". My preferred carry is a Sig 239 or a SCCY 9mm. Got talked out of a Shield .40 by a cop buddy who needed a BUG.

I just got an ATI 1911 last Christmas, and was carrying in a Mexican loop at 3:00. Recently, I made a holster for a fella with the same pistol, based on a pic of a Milt Sparks IWB. I liked the way it came out, and immediately whipped up a second. Not really a fan of IWB holsters, but this one sits nice at 4:00.

Prior to this, I carried a Ruger 44 SBH. And a 357 Uberti Cattleman before that.

There were some reports in a small percentage of early guns in early 2018 , issue was centered around the striker breakage, but Sig addressed that with a new striker design by mid 2018. Another was the night sights were not glowing.

Nor do I like tight elastic bands , ankle carry or those crotch pouch things...
that leaves OWB or Pocket carry for me.

I have several DeSantis Nemesis pocket holsters I like and just got another for the Sig.  I
also ordered a MY Holster thumb break OWB for the Sig that looks like I'll like.

Since the belt goes over the holster, it keeps the gun pulled in tight to the body, and for me it's snugged up right under my...errrr?. "overhang"  :o when worn just in front of the hip. Conceals pretty well with a loose fitting untucked t-shirt or a polo shirt.

I use either a 1908 .380 Colt model M or a Colt 1911 on a belt or a shoulder holster USFA SAA Sheriffs .45.
In the early 90s, I knew a 90 plus years old man who ran a gun shop in Wichita that still carried his old 1849 Pocket model, in the late 90s I knew a shop owner who kept a 2nd model S&W Russian under the counter. I guess it really is whatever you are most comfortable with.

I agree.  As I mentioned earlier, the P365 is rapidly taking over as my carry gun.  I use a Kydex IWB holster with a loose shirt over it or a Kydex pocket holster in my right front pocket.  I have a pouch with a flap that holds a spare magazine on my left hip.  It just looks like a multi-tool or something since you can't see what's in there.  This setup is just hard to beat...

Not a lot of gun shops in my area, and the two we have are high... And so are their prices. If Wally had it, which wasn't often, I'd get some. Otherwise, I wait till I go to Athens. An almost 3 hour drive.

For what it is worth
AS a State of Tennessee Concealed Carry Handgun Instructor....what I see on the range is that most people carry small concealable semi autos in 9mm or .380.  Out of a class of 40 students I might get one or two (usually women) who carry revolvers.   What I do see is that in many instances the guns people carry are not fitted to them and as a result they have difficulty handling them

Post by: Capt Quirk on September 22, 2019, 10:19:35 AM
And for what it is worth, I have seen many semi autos go "click", when they should go "BANG!". My wife got one of those little .380 semi autos, don't remember the make. While shooting it one day, the slide fell off. Not a fan of just any pistol, but revolvers just don't fail.

Too many folks have cc guns that they do carry but other than the initial ccw course don?t go to a pistol range [to shoot with no pressure] or to an idpa match [to shoot under pressure] to see if they can really operate the gun. I coerced my wife to several idpa matches to get her up to speed with her Detective Special. But she was not a gun gal so her revolver became her house gun when I was on night shift and she never carried. Got her to do a couple of cas shoots but it wasn?t her cup ?o? tea. She did like buying fancy dresses and hats with plumage though.

Fascinating ... in ABQ the Walmarts all have "computer paper signs" that essentially say "no firearms"  period.

However Target and Smiths (Kroger chain) have nice professional signs that cite state laws and indicate that Concealed Carry with a permit is perfectly fine.

The way I understood it, Walmart doesn't want "open carry". This may change from area to area, store to store. I just pull my t shirt over most of my 1911. I figure, if it is enough for a lawman to say it is a concealed weapon, good enough for me.

I will leave nothing to whim of - or interpterion by a LEO ?.

If it shows or even prints there is a chance of a not so harmonious confrontation ..if there is posted "BAN" I don't enter
I wont  go to Starbucks or patronize any established posted carry ban business, Ill shop or partake elsewhere.

I feel the 2nd Amendment and my State carry laws allows me to choose when & where I wish to carry, not a corporate policy.

I will  take notice of their policy and not open my wallet for their profit.

I haven't much choice of where to shop. 20 minutes to Wally world, or 45 minutes to Kroger. The only other choices in town, are an IGA or Harvey's. Both have poor selection and high prices. I hate Walmart, but I hate having to drive to Dublin too. If we are out there anyways, I prefer Kroger's. Better food, selection, and with their deals, good price.

I have been looking for firearms notices at Walmart, and have not seen any at all here. I don't push too hard, but don't cower and hide my gun either. Quite a different atmosphere, compared to Central Flordidia.

My take on CCW and discriminating  retail establishments  (entry Bans )

If a terrorist - mentally unbalanced - enraged subject or crazed youth is going to unleash mayhem he or she is going to do so and be able to get the devise to use .
whether it is a Firearm-knife-Improvised explosive device-lethal substance or motor vehicle.

They have surprise, usually stealth to use against a little expecting populous.

Now add that to an Advertised soft ( no gun permitted ) zone , and the populous are merely sheep for slaughter.... with 0 % chance ( save luck)

Truth is a Concealed carry may only enhance survival if you have the chance to bring it to battery.

However 0%  VS  marginal better percentage is still worth carrying....

If Corporate Retail is relying on a sign in the window advertising entry Bans for safety of its patrons , they are neither safe nor allowing for a constitutional right for law-abiding patronage....

They do not get my money, they do get my scorn

Ditto to what the Major said!

As to the original topic, for most of my LEO career my off duty weapon of choice was either a 45 ACP Commander or, once they were introduced a Colt Officer's ACP. Those choices continued after I retired until arthritis swelled my knuckles to the point I could no longer manage the 1911. I switched to 45 ACP Glocks for their wider, plastic grip frame which absorbs the recoil impulse instead of bashing my thumb joint. I mostly carried a Glock 30, then switched to the Glock 30S with its slimmer, lighter slide and barrel. I'm currently carrying a Glock 36 while the G30 frame goes in for some re-contouring and stippling.

If we had CCW in our benighted country of Kanuskistan, I'd pack one of my M19 snubs or one of my .45 Commanders. Both utterly reliable and capable of doing the job of keeping me alive.

But since we don't, I have to dial 911 and wait for the rcmp to save me and my wife and we live 50 miles from town. Guess what I'd do if the SHTF .... ?

Thanks Griff

Speer has always been quality in the past!
My personal favorite way back when (1980ish) was the CCI Lawman 200 grn hollow cavity round,  dubbed "The flying ashtray" .
it used a Speer 200 gr hollow cavity bullet pushed very fast.  I think it was an early attempt to rival the old Jurras "SuperVel" loads.
One trick was getting it to feed reliably!

But I never shot anything more sinister than paper, cans and bowling pins.
Heavy Flatnose Lead bullets like Coffin described worked best on the bowling pins, without any bounce-back.
Kinda what I am leaning towards today... one could say I am trying to duplicate the soft lead .45 Colt 255 gr RNFP in .45 acp

(didja see what I did there? sorta looped it back towards .45 Colt CAS !  didja notice? didja?)

Critical Defense in both the 9 and .380. Because it feeds reliably in both and has a good reputation. FMJ RN in a 9mm is almost guaranteed to over-penetrate, unless it hits a major bone.. Don't want to shoot both the bad guy, and the good guy standing somewhere behind him. I don't know if the flat point FMJ 9mm would be better than the RN.

My Good Capt Quirk & Major:

what pony said:
FMJ RN in a 9mm is almost guaranteed to over-penetrate, unless it hits a major bone.. Don't want to shoot both the bad guy, and the good guy standing somewhere behind him. I don't know if the flat point FMJ 9mm would be better than the RN.

from elsewhere:
"For a visual, picture 8 one gallon jugs of water in a single file row, 9mm FMJ will be in the 8th jug or through it.
A good HP like HST will expand to about .60 diameter and be at the back of the 3rd jug maybe dent the 4th, be inside the 4th for sure.
Basically FMJ will penetrate double an expanded HP. "

Also, I seem to find too many recorded cases of innocent "colateral damage" due to 9mm FMJ overpenetration. At one point
NYC had their street cops carrying 9mm with FMJ and the number of bystanders and other cops shot due to ricochet and "thru-and-thru"
are ... astounding. It is a wonder NYC is not bankrupt due to lawsuits!

so, for civilian CCW ( ie no need to penetrate barriers ) it seems it is highly recommended to forgo 9mm FMJ in favor of even cheap HP.

(BTW I know more than one active LEO who carries a different colored magazine full of FMJ just for barrier situations)

and thus my quest on another thread seen here

https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,63080.msg747313.html#msg747313 (https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,63080.msg747313.html#msg747313)

for functional heavy soft lead FP or HP in .38,  9mm,  and .45

At the very least, I have 2 or 3 boxes of quality hollowpoints,  Shoot a magazine full for function and POI, then find a practice load that duplicates it. Those 3 boxes then will probably serve me nearly forever.

BUT PLEASE Keep those posts and opinions coming

Oh, I just found scientifical testing informatics over here

https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/

at least it gives one "bannanas to bannanas" comparison data

and re overpenetration, yes it is a fact:

From the early ?90s adoption of 16-shot 9mm pistols (Glock 19, SIG-SAUER P226 DAO, and Smith & Wesson Model 5946) through 1999, NYPD issued a full metal jacket ?hardball? round, comprising a round-nose 115 grain bullet in the mid-1100 fps velocity range.

The New York Times exposed the following facts in its startling report on the matter:

?According to statistics released by the department, 15 innocent bystanders were struck by police officers using full metal jacket bullets during 1995 and 1996, the police said. Eight were hit directly, five were hit by bullets that had passed through other people and two were hit by bullets that had passed through objects,? stated the Times.

In other words, in rough numbers, 53 percent of these tragic occurrences were apparently missed shots, while 33 percent were ?shoot-throughs? of violent felony suspects.

Counting bullets that went through objects to hit presumably unseen innocent victims (13 percent), that tells us that roughly 46 percent of these innocent bystanders were shot by over-penetrating bullets that ?pierced their backstops.?

The Times continued, ?In that same period, 44 police officers were struck by gunfire using the old ammunition: 21 were hit directly, 2 were struck by bullets that ricocheted and 17 were struck by bullets that passed through other people.?

hope this helps
or is at least entettaining
