Crimping .32-20
« on: April 06, 2023, 07:43:32 AM »
I have developed a late-in-life love affair with .32-20 in a 92 Winchester and Colt Bisley. What a sweet combination. Problem: Lee dies do not adequately crimp lead bullets for use in the Winchester. The bullets are set back in the cases in the magazine tube. I can't find an adequate roll crimp die to fix the bullets in the cases...taper crimp doesn't do it. Help!

I have removed the de-capping pin from the sizing die and run my loaded rounds back into sizing die a little.

I use Lee dies including the factory crimp (collet-style) die in 32-20.  Bullets never collapse into the case using smokeless or BP, in a Colt SAA, Uberti '73 rifle, and Winchester '92 carbine.  I'm using regular lead bullets crimped in the crimp groove.

Ditto...factory crimp (collet-style) die in 32-20.... BP in my original 73 and Trailboss in my Marlin CL

Hello Dave,

Yes, the Lee Factory Crimp Die in 32-20 is the way to go.
It is a collet which puts the crimp in the case, only pressure on the crimping point as the shell holder is what activates the collet.
Not the Carbide Factory Crimp Die, a complete different monster. This one crimps the bullet, then resizes the cartridge as it exits the die to eliminate any bulge.

the Lee factory crimp die is used on my .38 Colt with a Colt Paper Cartridge Works bullet which has a tiny heel but the crimp holds tight.
It ought work like a charm on a bigger crimping area.

Received a collet-type $15.00 Lee crimper and it does the trick! Thanks

I've found the RCBS cowboy dies followed by LFC die is the only way to go with the old wcf cartridges.

Dave,
just happened to look farther down the list and realised I wrote you about the 32-20 back in Jan. Only change is it should have been 1966 instead 1996 to approx 2008 or so.
Brain farted,
