45 Colt with .455 Webly hollow base black powder
« on: February 16, 2023, 09:20:36 AM »
I recently purchased MP Molds .455 Webly hollow base mold. This is a 4 cavity mold that makes an appriximate 225 grain hollow base or a 250 grain plain base, depending upon how you set up the mold pins. The website says it makes a 200 grain hollow base but mine, using 1:40 tin to lead came out at 223 grains.

I got this mold because it has been difficult to get really good accuracy from my 3rd Gen Colt SAA with .452" bullets so I wanted to try at least a .454" bullet. The bullets dropped from the mold about .456" and I sized them down to .454". Lubed with a lamb tallow and beeswax mixture. Loaded with 26 grains 2F black powder and 9 grains Cream of Wheat filler. That was the best load so far and here's the target.

      Greetings!

I've been interested in this Bullet Mould; looks like a good one! I size all of my .45 Colt / .45 S&W bullets to
.454", and cast them using "Range Scrap", generally 10BHN / no harder than 14BHN.
Is "C.O.W." cream of wheat? Have You tried .45S&W / .45 Colt Govt length brass? It will allow You to use lighter
charges of BP. So far, I've had very good results ( with Smokeless ) in my A. Uberti Old Model S&W American, .45
5"bbl. and a Colt's New Service.

 :) MTM  ;)

Yes.  C.O.W. is often the short form for Cream of Wheat, however I prefer C-0-W which makes absolutely no difference.  I do however champion the use of C-0-W as my filler of choice when concocting reduced loads.  C-0-W doesn't compress and doesn't suck up a propellents inherent moisture as some others are want to do.  I do suggest caution however, when reducing loads in BIG pistol cases.  Some folks approach an equal weight or volume of filler to the actual propellant.  Not so Bueno.  The filler can actually become part of the "pay load" even though it burns.

If you really want to shoot some reduced loads, I suggest reducing the case volume by using Cowboy 45 Special cases.  Very efficient.  And to really reduce recoil, try the 130Gr Barnstormer bullet.  Light and very accurate.
