Light Shotshell load data?
« on: February 14, 2023, 08:59:46 AM »
Howdy reloaders,

I'm relatively new to shotshell reloading. Where do folks go to get (ultra) light load data. I have been working with a Lyman handbook and have made some good, what I would call, standard one ounce loads. They work well and knock down the targets well,  but they are a little stout for my lightweight coach gun. Hence the above question.

Howdy (again) fellers,

I'm embarrassed that I didn't even include the gauge in my original query. Here's what I'm doing for my 12 ga. Rossi hammer gun:

16.7 gr Clays, 1oz. shot, WAA12SL wad in AA or STS hulls. I'm about to test the same load in some roll crimped hulls (also new territory for me).

Based on a review of Lyman's handbook, I think I can keep everything the same and just load 7/8ths of shot.

Thanks for the info so far. Maybe the above will foster some more thoughts.

Hodgdon has 3/4 oz 12 ga loads listed.  More loads per bag of shot.

Will also work for CB0178-12 wads. They are the same overall height. The difference is the CB0178-12 does not have the button in be bottom of the cup.

 :)  Reverend Chase  ;)

I fear my contribution will be of little use for you, as I play a bit different.  I start with ALL BRASS Magtech Hulls.  Drop 40Gr 2F APP in the hull.  Drop in a Ballistic Products Spitfire Wad (One Ounce Payload).  One Ounce of shot (well duh) and cap it all off with a double over shot card with signature stamp.

Really nice mild load.  Really nice cloud of Smoke.  Really easy to clean-up.

Back again,

A lot of help here from the good cowboys. Thanks fellers.

Now on to the esteemed Coffinmaker. You are correct sir! After doing an untold number of black powder shooting seminars for a bunch of folks throughout the 70's (including a few magazine and outdoor writers who went on to become black powder "experts") I promised myself that I would never face cleaning a muzzleloader again.

However, with what I'm hearing about APP and the easier cleaning of cartridge guns, I'm tempted to consider a dalliance.

Newtons third law says a lighter load of shot and a heavier gun = less recoil
My system was to use a heavy gun and a one oz. load.
I am not packing that heavy  cannon around all day just from cart to loading table to stand to unloading table back to cart.
It worked for me

Howdy Rev, my loads are about like what you are seeing from the other Wire.  I used to use 15gr of Clays with 7/8 shot and a gray wad in AA hulls (I use STS hulls for BP).  Switched to 14.4gr of WST.  Cheddite primers.
Feels about the same as AA LNLR to me.
