Someone on this forum suggested using a wedge inside the buttpad to fill up that crescent. I did and it works just great. It took the "OUCH" out of the crescent buttplate on my 45-70 trapdoor Hawken.

That's a good idea. It looks good, too. I made one once by layering leather and then shaping it to fit the crescent. Then I made a cover to go over all of it. More work than necessary, but it certainly did work.

Thanks Gents, but it wasn't my idea to fill in the crescent part. I can't remember (being quite old) who suggested it, but it was a dandy of an idea. My crescent buttplate doesn't bite me now. If I want to look authentic I just take it off until I shoot.
Try it, you'll like it and again I am indebted to the person that suggested it.
