Ok so how crazy does this sound? I choose the world championship as the first time I ever play a new game. I guess I'm getting a little apprehensive. I've shot SASS, NCOWS and GAF, but not IPSC, USPSA or IDPA. My question is this, for those of you who shoot cowboy matches, what differences should I be aware of?

I'm doing the same thing!  We may have to battle for last place!  My training are the videos of previous matches posted on YouTube.  Actually, I'm in for the experience of shooting the vintage weapons. I don't think this will become a gear race with modified weapons and game specific leather.

I don't either, and I'm not as concered that I not have the correct gear as I was thinking about not looking completely stupid because there's some minor detail that I'm not aware of that everybody else already knows so they figure I know it too. :-[ I've read the rules page on the AZSA site. I was just looking for a guiding hand from those with expirience. ;)

Relax guys,

It's not that different from Cowboy shooting.  Safety first, followed by FUN.

The major differences are:

We do have a lot of movement so be sure of your muzzle direction and don't violate the 180.

We load at a loading table but we unload on the line under the RO's supervision.

You can shoot at a target as many times as you want to until you hit it or on paper targets until you’re happy with your hits.

You can load as many rounds as you want to and abandon guns (if their safe and pointed in a safe direction) and move on to others.

You don't have to stand in one place and shoot.  You can be moving and shooting at the same time (but don't have to) and will have the opportunity to do this with all three guns at this match.  Just be sure your finger is outside the trigger guard when you’re moving and not actually shooting.

We have pistol only and rifle and pistol shooting categories.  You will still engage the long gun targets with the guns you do have and many (but not all) times you will have an option of using rifle or pistol to engage the shotgun targets.  Any time you’re engaging a long gun (rifle or shotgun) target with a hand gun you can use a two hand hold if you wish to.

You’re not required to carry guns or ammo on your person (many ladies in dresses don't) they can all be staged where ever you wish in the capper.  We provide barrels and tables for this purpose and the shooter can move the barrels around to make this possible as long as no safety issues are observed like the chance you may put a gun down on one of the barrels and then run in front of it later in the caper.

I’m sure you’ll find a few more minor differences but refer back to my first statement, safety first followed by FUN.

Thanks G-man, that's exactly what I wanted!

In many ways it sounds more GAF shooting than I expected except for shooting on the move and loading at a loading table. In GAF we load and unload at the line under RO supervision and you can't shoot or load on the move and the reloads must be loaded from ones person

Oh and I appoligize; I tend to "try too hard" when I get excited about something new.... and I AM excited about shooting this match ;D

Pit, that last pic, is the US Officer's holster rig one of the replicas from IMA? If so, how is the overall quality, I have looked and wondered about those many times.

I got it from Sportsmans Guide, so I don't know who made it. I haven't seen an original so I can't compare it to an original for quality, but as far as the quality of the leather and fit, it's pretty good. I don't like the finish on it, I wish it was just plain leather colored, but its dyed brown. It fits my 1911 and magazines perfectly, so it was easily worth what I gave for it which wasn't a lot.

That is a nice looking rig.  I had concerns about durability but as it seems to have made it through the match just fine, my concerns are unjustified.  I may have to add one to my collection.  I bet the IMA one is from the same manufacturer, they look identical to me.

Oh yeah, durablility is going to be fine. It's well made from quality leather. I've had this one since I got my first 1911 several years ago. I use it for Wild Bunch, GAF Expansion Era matches and Zoot Shooters. Like I said my only concern is historical accuracy, but again I've never handled an original so that part might be ok too.
