Guns of the Old West Magazine.
« on: July 11, 2021, 05:16:21 PM »
From past issues, it was getting bad enough, but now with Dennis Adler leaving, I do not see it getting any better. Last issue (Summer 2021) they had stories that had absolutely nothing to do with guns of the old west like "Dirty Secrets of the Donner Party" , story about Winchester Model 12, which I do not consider a gun of the old west. I believe the magazine is on it's downhill death spiral, as so many of the other cowboy related gun magazines have gone.  :'(

Adler is leaving to follow his Airsoft & BB gun phase, ...  Well Bye !  ,  I have no interest in that youth discipline.
Never a big fan of him anyway  :-\

I admit the Summer issue was not much, but the Spring issue had better content,  it seems to run like that hot to cold .
Still, I may  renew  :-\ GOTOW is the only publication I subscribe to... with exception to
The Shootist , the NCOWS publication which I'll continue to support .  I even write for it on occasion.
And I get the GCA quarterly  , Garand Collectors Asso. offering, which has some interesting stories, facts and photo's.

However, I have received the last American Rifleman, I'll want to pay for , as it contains to much Politico and  the newest Tupperware or Black gun offering. All of little real interest to me . Actually the only thing in it I care for is the last page " I have this old gun "  and that is after I waded through or picked up  all the too many re-new membership leaflets.
They can keep it, the ball caps & Chinese knock off  folding knives too.

After discovering it over a year ago I subscribed just based on the name. I have always been disappointed in every issue. I didn't renew the subscription but they continued sending me magazines for a few issues. Been a while since I got one...and I don't miss it at all.

It was better years ago as Harris Publications
Use to have Mike Beliveau ,  but he was dropped shortly after when Athlon Media Group took it on...

I suppose I've subscribed some 17 + years
I began to loose interest when it seemed Adler was becoming the big he bull .

Now he's all about  Air Guns , Air Soft and is lending his articles to that discipline.
All well in good I suppose , just not my cupa

Yea I get it but you don't really pay for it. Sure it's included in your membership but that's really not the same thing!

Too bad the NRA is our friend, no matter what they are the largest PRO GUN group in the world. Hope you change your mind. I'm a life member.

I've only ever purchased a couple GOTW years ago, but have a number of them that were sent to places I worked and I could take free.  And the last number of years I mostly look at it in Walmart's magazine section.  I've noted lots of typos and mis-labeled pics in the past.  Seems there is always stuff I don't care about in them, but also things that I did have an interest in.  Since it is the only mass-produced rag that caters to our era, I'll keep looking at it.

Some did not care for the articles concerning the Golden era of Films,  character actors etc. written by Jack Lewis or the child actor Patrick Curtis , But I enjoyed those because I was that industry .

Trivia alert...

Crossdraw Kid
Patrick Curtis, is the only remaining child (baby Beau Wilkes ) actor still living that was in Gone with The Wind and he was married to  Raquel Welch !  He also Produced films including some of Ms Welch.
Also known as the  Crossdraw Kid , he served active duty in 1967
was assigned to Marine Fighter/Attack Squadron VMFA-323 — The Death Rattlers — who were then stationed at Da Nang , Vietnam. The Snakes, flying F-4 Phantoms, then transferred from Da Nang Air Base, and flew out of Marine Corps Air Station, Chu Lai, starting in early ‘67.

........
 Jack Lewis
While filming "Mr Roberts "  the stuntman hired to do the motorcycle going off the pier stunt refused to do the stunt, John Ford hired a bystander who couldn't ride a motorcycle but had the nerve to try the stunt. The "bystander" was a young Marine named Jack Lewis,
Jack Lewis served with the Marines during WW II.
In 1950 Lewis was on the editorial staff of the Santa Ana (CA) Register and writing screenplays for Johnny Mack Brown, Lash Larue and others when he was called back to service with the Marines in Korea. He was one of the first Americans into Wonsan, North Korea when it was taken from the communists. He returned to the states but then volunteered to return to Korea and spent 14 months on a second tour. When he finished the tour in 1953 he had been promoted to captain and had been awarded Bronze Star, the Air Medal and the Commendation Medal. He wrote Naked Gun (1956) and Sergeant Rutledge (1960)
He  was the Founder of Gun World magazine.

On the magazine topic, I wonder if the writers/editors are having a hard time getting test guns from manufacturers as their supplies are limited as well. That could be a reason for the added "non-traditional" articles have been used.

That very well could be although they've always been behind in their gun reviews and they've listed guns as good for CAS when actually they're not. Great idea for a magazine but I don't subscribe anymore. I check out the newest issue and if it seems interesting I'll buy it.

I still enjoy the publication. The people like us who like cowboy guns don't have a lot of options for cowboy gun related magazines.

Why have all my comments been marked "remove"??

They are only marked "remove" on your own posts for you to see.  I only see "remove" on my own posts and nobody elses.  I guess so you can delete it yourself if you want.  Not sure how long that has been there, since I didn't pay attention until you asked.   :)
