The Shootin' Range / Re: Target shooting with cannon

Silver Creek Slim:  That's some mighty good shooting and it looks like you had a lot of fun doing it.

Had a couple of friends who are members of the North-South Skirmish Association (N-SSA) and invited me to attend their big National matches at Fort Shenandoah.  The cannon and mortar matches were held on Friday on the main range.  Everything from scale model to full-size, and even an original were used.  They fired at large silhouettes of "enemy" cannon as targets.  It was a real hoot!

The Leather Shop / Re: Percussion cap box

A cavalryman would typically carry musket-size caps for his carbine / musketoon / rifle in his cap box.

The pistol- / revolver-size caps are so small that it would be impractical to fit them on the nipples while in the heat of battle, so to speak.

One would be better served by swopping pre-loaded & capped cylinders.
Combustible cartridges were the preferred ammo, but especially the Confederates would frequently have to rely on cast roundballs and a powder flask.

On my computer the Like button is right beside the quote button, on the upper right of each post.

Thanks Abilene, but I don't have anything else, just the quote button.  Perhaps it's related to the browser.

Look at the old Time-Life series 'The Old West' and read 'The Lawmen'.

More specifically, look at the book "The Gunfighters" which contains a chapter entitled "The Man with the Badge."  You will notice that most of the lawmen pictured are wearing "town clothes" except for those photos where they are actually on the trail.  Although it could be argued that they wore their fancy duds for the studio photo.

Attached below is a listing of all of the volumes in that series, in case there are other aspects that you would like to research.  There's no reason why you couldn't be a lawman who later switched sides to become an outlaw (or vice-versa), or who decided to hang up his guns to become a rancher, storekeeper, or other businessman.  Or maybe even a lawman who maintains a side-gig, since they were not typically well paid at the time.

The Leather Shop / Rawhide thong for holster edge
« Last post by Davem on Today at 05:25:04 PM »
Question. I want to make a western holster with the edge of the pouch held together with a whip stitched thong rather than stitched with linen thread.  I bought a tool from Tandy with slits but the slits are so far apart that there is a gap between the thong.

Anyone suggest how to make a holster so there isn't a big gap between the wraps.

Scroll over the like button on the menu above the post and click on it.

Odd, but I don't see any such "Like Button" on the menu above the post.  Mine only shows "Quote", "Report to Moderator", or "Logged."

Question: is that cap box for a musket/rifle?  I ask because for revolvers I thought combustible cartridges were exclusively used.
