what's in a name?
« on: July 19, 2015, 09:56:51 PM »
Back in the 1860's,  the New Haven Arms Co. was producing a rifle designed by B.T. Henry.  What was it called back then? Was the New Haven Arms Co. calling it the "Henry", or the "New Haven Arms Co. Repeating Rifle", or something else?

Much like the Colt factory with the Peacemaker. The factory didn't call it a "Colt", nor did they call it by the name of the designers, William Mason and Charles Richards. The factory called it the "New Model Army Metallic Cartridge Revolving Pistol".

With the Henry (or modern replicas) how does one refer to a "Henry" without having it be confused with rifles made by that modern, yet unrelated company called the Henry Repeating Arms Co? (made all the more confusing now that they're making an 1860 replica?)

I used to just call it a "Henry Rifle".  Then I found myself referring to it as an "1860 Henry" to differentiate it from the modern manufacturer.  Now I often say "Uberti 1860 Henry", both to distinguish it from the other manufacturer, and to identify it as a reproduction (though since I'm not independently wealthy, and that is quite obvious to anyone I meet, the latter distinction probably isn't necessary).  I don't know what Oliver Winchester called it.

Based on this old ad, I'd guess the manufacturer might have called it Henry's Patent Repeating Rifle, and I'll bet everybody else called a Henry.

Nice ad, that's pretty cool!

I find myself calling mine a '60 Henry.

In period letters , as in orders it is referred to as Henry's Patent Repeating Rifle  or Mr. Henry's Patent Repeating Rifle.

I have also see a letter home from a soldier ....he writes he used Mr. Henry's Repeating Rifle

If I had a Henry Henry's Patent Repeating Rifle thats what I would call it ::)

It's nick name is "Henry 1860" not sure what I will call the Steel frame yet. ;D

Since my:

"Uberti, Modern Reproduction of an 1860 Model Henry's Patent Repeating Rifle"

is the only Henry I own, I'm content to just call it "The Henry"

I've read a number of letters and memoirs from Union soldiers who referred to them as "sixteen shooters."

Most of the folks I know who shoot Henry rifles (most of my shooting partners), just call them Henry Rifles.  In fact, most of the folks I shot with, shoot Henry Rifles (we all just call them Henry Rifles), I think I said that.

When we refer to that ...... "Creation" ....... fostered by the "new" Henry repeating arms, we just call it a "Big Boy."  That is not a term
of endearment either.  they aren't wonderful.  A poor copy of a Marlin action, enclosed, with a round breach block.  Yuck.

Now, here is a numerical name/nomenclature, "1873".
Which model/manufacture could this refer to?
Colt, Winchester, Springfield?
But, if someone says just plan old "Henry", is there any mistake as to what they are talking about?
My best,

True, back in the day.  These days, plenty of times somebody says they shoot a Henry and then I see they have a Big Boy  ::)

That's why a lot of people were irritated with Henry.  They referred to Lincoln's gun and then sold you a Big Boy.  Now things are even more cornfusing since Henry now makes Henry's!!!!!

What one calls something today... an old Chevy pickup, a "Cadillac"... does not make it historical truth or a FACT!
