Title: Would like to try some snake skin...
Post by: Knarley Bob on March 06, 2023, 12:18:17 PM
Have never used it before, but would like to put some on a new gun rig. Asking for advise, know how, dos and don'ts. Any advise welcome.

Thanks,
KB

I've never used it but many do an inlay or insert of snakeskin as an accent.

I've never worked with Snakeskin before either. Just a wild guess on my part, but I'm wondering if you could laminate Sankeskin to 8-9 oz leather using Barge or contact cement? Maybe try it on a small piece to see if it is possible?

Hi, I used Barge.  I made a couple of belts and a hat band out of Copperhead skins.  A lady I work with raises hunting dogs so she kills quite a few every year.  Buy a decent bottle of tanning solution for reptile skins and be gentle.  The skins are pretty fragile.  You'll need a cheap board to pin the skins on while tanning them.  I used stick pins to stretch the skins a little bit.

What ever snake you off to get the skin, freeze it solid before you start cutting it up.  Copperheads give birth to live kids, but at least there's are big enough to see.  Rattlesnakes I believe have smaller ones but they still have potent poison.

This is the hatband on a hat modeled after Wayne's in the Shootist.  The black stitches are where the hoe went through the snake.

That's a mighty nice color headband for that hat. Looks good.

That is good looking. The scale stamping goes right along with the snake skin.

Hi
That looks great, what stamp is that?  At first I thought it was a squiggly veiner, but nope.
Thanks

That is a good use of snakeskin. For a cool knife, too. Looks good.
