Trap:
I'm moving your information to the top to make it easier for folks to respond to. Thanks for taking this on. I'll be in touch.
Original Post: I am looking at putting on a TAPS event. The first thing that has to be done is to set a date. The KVC is putting on the GAF grand muster the first week in Oct. so that is out. I am looking at either the wknd of Sept 22 or 29. The KVC will also sponsor the event so the event will have insurance. If you are at least 50% sure you will be able to make the event, let me know which of the two dates would be best for your schedule. This would be a Thur. eve to Sun. timeframe.
-
Forgive me, but what is TAPS?
What is KVC?
And what is GAF?
Thanks.

I mentioned this on another thread, but should probably reply here, as well. Barring something major, I'll be there. Any of the dates mentioned so far works for me.

I'll be there if I can use my Spencer and 58 Remington.
-
You can. I hope to attend but do not have much hope as we have a whole bunch of grand babies due about that time.

-
Since there is no time factor, Henrys and Spencers are fine.
-
The larger the variety of firearms, the better. Spencers need to be in original calibers, though. No 44-40s or 45 S&W or 44 Russian, etc. Henrys need to be in .44 or larger calibers, to be as close to the original as possible. Black powder or black powder substitutes only.
-
I'm sure going to try and be there! This sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. Hope we can get quite a few of our group there! Will probably bring a Henry and a percussion revolver.

To get some conversation about this going; Who is planning on coming to this event, and what are you planning on shooting.
-
Barring something very major, I'll be there, and I'm really looking forward to it. Over the winter I've been slowly bringing my gear -- clothing and firearms -- out of the mountain man era and into a later period. I'll be shooting a .50 caliber percussion Tennessee rifle and a '51 Colt Navy.
I'd been thinking about doing an 1858 Eastern Kansas buffalo hunter character, but my wife and I used to portray an 1830s Southwestern couple, she with an emphasis on being a former Comanche child captive. It wouldn't be hard to bump that up to an 1840s Bent's Fort hunter/trader, although I'd have to give up my Navy to do it properly.
At any rate, this is going to be fun, and it's going to be great to finally meet some of you face-to-face, too.
-
What day would the shooting me on? 20th is a thursday. Depending on my school schedule, I could maybe make saturday the 22nd.
Oh, and do you know the distance on the targets? I have a henry, but also another 1860 colt with a shoulder stock. Probably bring them all.
-
You could easily shoot through on Sat. Distances will vary widely but mostly under 100 yds.
-
Hey, Trap! Will be getting my registration fee to you within the next week or so for our shoot in September. Sure hope a number of the guys and gals can make it for the camp and shoot!
Caleb, et al, I've been rethinking my persona for this shoot, and I may be going for the earlier part of our time period, as you were discussing, Caleb. Still working on getting a Paterson. I may very well wind up coming as a Taos/Bent's Fort trapper or trader, armed with a Paterson and some type of muzzleloading rifle or trade gun. Any way I do decide, I'm excited about getting to finally do this!
Look forward to hearing from the rest of you guys!

Sounds good, Jake. I'm going to be in Colorado next week, and I hope to talk to the folks at Bents Fort about doing a Plainsmen encampment there at some future date.
I'm also going to be talking to one of the descendants of the Bents, as well. She's supposed to be very knowledgeable about the Santa Fe Trail. I'm looking forward to that.
I'll be sending my registration in after the 4th of July. I should know by then if my wife will be able to come with me.

Has any body signed up for the encampment yet? I haven't, but am trying to get situated to attend.

I think that Trap has one registration so far.

I am still planning on coming, but pending my school schedule I won't be able to commit until the 1st week in september when I actually get some syllabi in hand. Hope it flies as come he77 or high water I will be done with grad school in 2013, oh and God as my witness I will never go hungry again.
-
I'll be sending my registration in by the end of this week. I'd held off to see if my wife could attend, but she isn't going to be able to make it this year, so it'll be just me. Looking forward to it.
-
I have a working computer again and the NCOWS national is over. I now have time to devote to the TAPS encampment. We have two official entries so far. I will update this as needed. jt
To register see post #5, this thread.

I'm hoping to get out there, but it'll be around the 1st of September before I'll know for sure. Spencer and a Navy Colt probably. Though I'd love to find a JP Murray Carbine.
-
As much as I would like to come, I will not be able to make the encampment this Fall! Things have just not worked out for it to happen. I look forward to getting feedback from the guys who can make it!
Best Regards,
Jake

I am still trying to make this work, but I have been traveling since Mid-July and think I will be home just in time to start back to school. Have not even been able to make an outdoor range to do the summer rifle shoot. >:( Maybe I will win Powerball and show up in a buffalo hide Teepee, if that happens bring an umbrella as that would be around the time pigs are flying south for the winter.
-
Trap...won't be able to make this years encampment due to knee surgery August 24th of this year (2012), will plan for next years get together...Bought a new RK Lodge lean-to so Ill be ready...might bring my new Prairie Schooner....??
Bill
-
Jake, sorry to hear you can't make it. Hopefully in the future.
Mogorilla, I'll be looking for those pigs. I've got a few things myself that I've been postponing until they take wing.
Bill, good luck with your surgery. It's hell getting old. (Ask me how I know.)
Drydock, a .50 caliber Spencer and '51 Navy will put you right in there. Hope you can make it.
Believe it or not, I stay current on these posts. I just don't always take time to respond. Still working evenings and some weekends, but I'm looking for that to change around the middle of September.

Bill did you get your wagon built? I knew you had been talking about it 2 or 3 years ago.

Looks like I can be there ;D I'll get the check out Tuesday when I get back home!
-
Ah, a good day. Got the check in the mail, and won a Musketoon on gunbroker! ;D
-
Unfortunatly, The date to enter the Encampnent and shoot has passed, with only 3 entries. As said if I did not receive at least 8 entries the event will be, (and is ) cancelled ! maybe we can try again at a time when there is more interest. Those of you that have sent checks let me know if I can tear up yours or if you would rather I can return it to you. Please PM me here of your preference.
-
Thanks, Trap. If not this year, maybe next.
-
TRAP, KEEP MY CHECK.......USE IT IN ANY WAY TO BENEFIT THE KVC BOYS............REGARDS.....C.O. JONES
-
Doggone it! Hope it gets done next time. I'll look forward to it!
-
Hopefully next time will work for me. I would not have made it due to school. ONE MORE YEAR! While I have always had a perverse interest in the possibility of a post apocalyptic world to try my hand at carving out a small kingdom (let's go Doofensmirtz and say a nice tri-state area), I really hope the Mayans had no idea what they were talking about as I would be ticked to have 1 more year to go for this stinking Masters. ;D
-
But then you gotta watch out for the platipi . . .
-
Traded for a couple tents and have the rest of a camp already, so next year it's a go as long as I have time enough to get leave.

Mingo:
I'd like to see it happen if we can generate enough commitment. We'll be revisiting the idea again in the coming months.

Would spring be a better time for more to make it? maybe April?
-
trap
Can we kill a few of those Kansas Turkeys ? ;D ;D ;D ???
-
Personally I wish someone would kill them ALL
-
I like the idea of a Spring Match. Shaking off winter, burning powder, wearing wool. ;D
-
Not sure what works best for me. I am amazed I will be able to do the Jesse James Farm shoot this weekend, but itis ~5 hours from garage back to garage. My schedule is nuts until December 2013, at which point I will have fully gone to the darkside and completed my MBA and gasp, this Missouri Gorilla will be a Jawhawk. When it happens I will definitely try and make it.
-
Sorry about the jayhawk connection ;)
-
I have spoken to landowner, and 1st wknd of mar is a go if we want it. any conflicts? can we get a showing? jt
-
I can make that!
-
As always I am a maybe? Still working and dont get a lot of vacation time and I will be at the NCOWS convention a little later in March.
-
I will certainly try to make that one! I still look forward to getting together with you all.
From The Republic of Texas,
Jake
-
Trap, I wouldn't be able to make it in March, and probably no earlier than the middle of May. I'd hate to miss our first encampment, but it might be necessary if we can get enough members to commit to a March date. I'd rather we have one even if I can't be there, than not have one at all.
-
March sounds good for me.
-
March; a green muddy month down below. Some people like it; farmers mostly.

The schedule has been set for spring. The first weekend in Apr has been set aside for a TAPS/ buffalo shoot. That will be Apr. 5 6 7. more details to follow. jt

I'm going to lock this thread, and we'll move all further correspondence to the 2013 Encampment thread. Caleb
