Footlocker

My brother has asked me to restore the 1870's footlocker he had at the Muster.  I need some detailed pictures or drawings of the footlocker and tray if anyone can tell me where I can look. Thanks, Jake

Jake I have the plans but I suspect that the foot locker is worth more "as is"

If he wants a new looking one I'll trade him.

The restoration I have in mind is to make a tray, make a key and restore the lock that is installed in it.  I would like to know what the original hinges and handles looked like.  Maybe some touch up of the blue paint.  Jake

I've had several requests, so let me answer them here. If I can get permission to reprint them(which I'm pretty sure I can) I will post them here as a .pdf and maybe get them added to the GAF website. If not I'm pretty sure I can share them individually via e-mail. Now the problem is that I will have to have some time to go through my stuff and find them, then my all in one printer is down so I'll have to find another way to scan the plans. When I do find the plans there will be plans for three different types of footlockers. all from the 1860-1880's.

Jake, What I saw at the muster it looked like the hinges and handles were either original or they were the type on it original. I'd leave them alone. The tray is cedar, dovetailed, fits in the area above the lips and has oval shaped holes cut for handles. the plans will provide a better description.

Thanks 1st Sgt.. A very interesting book overall not just for the footlocker deminsions.

Ok here's wher I'm at on the footlocker plans. I have them saved as .pdf's. They are just over 2 mb, 11 mb and 31mb in size.
I got the small one to Col. Bull Schmidt who posted it on the GAF web site. Obviously the 2 bigger ones are going to be the most help to people, but so far I haven't came up with a good idea of how to post it. I'm going to try to zip it and see if that helps me to be able to e-mail the files. If any of you have any other ideas let me know.

the Plans that you put on the GAF web site are the same as G.O.56, April 30,1875 and is below.
The plans are the same with some minor changes. They look good, I'll try them out.
The Fort Laramie Web site has pictures of the barracks and how the Lockers were designed to fit.
The Iron Composit Bunks distance between the footboard legs is 28 inches, this is why the length of 24 in. in the clear was decided( my assumption). with the 3/4 in. pine on each end the length will be 25.5 in. long and 13.5 in wide and 10.75 in. tall.

G.O. 56 of April of 1875, that is the order that deals with footlockers. It is worded thusly:


The Quartermaster's Department will provide, in all permanent barracks, a box or locker for each soldier in which to store his full dress uniform and extra clothing.
  The box or locker will be of the following dimensions:
Length, 24 Inches   \
Breadth, 12 Inches  |    In the clear.
Height, 10 Inches    /
To be constructed of pine three-fourths of an inch thick, with iron hinges ten inches in length and one inch and a half in width, together with suitable staple and hasp.
Each man to provide his own padlock. The boxes will be permanent fixtures of the barracks.

I have rewritten the The Fort Davis 1874 footlocker plans and the Fort Union footlocker plans  The plans can be found under the "History" link. They are in PDF format but have a MUCH smaller file size than before. I will do the Pvt. McAnulty (Fort Laramie 1875-1878) design but would like for someone to type up the verbiage while I take care of the artwork. I think we can reduce the file size to a point that downloading/printing will not be a problem.
