Infantry
« on: December 08, 2005, 01:56:29 PM »

Today in Spain is a holiday. It is a religious celebration  and it´s also the patron saint of the Infantry arm. I´m a member of an Unit of light Infantry, paratroopers.

Today I want to congratulate all my infantry comrades that are on duty,(in Irak, Afganisthan, Bosnia, Kosovo, etc); or that at some time in their life they have lived the Infantry. I also want to send a special greeting to all those old soldiers that have been infantrymen along the history.

   Felicidades a todos, Compañeros

Para-Marine here!

All Marines are Riflemen first, regardless of their training, position or rank.  Some, like Major Lewis, just need more training than the rest of us!  ;D

I know gunners (artillerymen and ordnance) have St Barbara as their patron saint, but I never knew there was a patron saint of Infantrymen.  Who would that be?

Order of St. George - Patron Saint of Cavalry and Armor (American Army)

Saint Michael the Archangel - the Patron Saint of  Paratroopers.

Saint Barbara is that of Artillerymen.

Infanty's Patron Saint is Martin of Tours - but Spanish Infantry is Inmaculada - The Blessed Virgin.

And so on...

Sine Pari,

St. Bayonet, the patron saint of all Marine Infantry....

Scout,

As was explained to me, if you weren't Infantry, you were just support, kind of like an athletic supporter... 8) ;D

Spainish Marshal,

I had the absolute pleasure of Cross Training with some Members of the Spanish Legion at the time.  I was totally shocked to find out that Spain had a Legion and these guys were not Regular Army.   I thought it was really cool that they were carrying MG-34's and MG 42's as Crew served weapons....

Major Lewis,

I hope you remember that the next time you need a little artillery, naval gunfire and/or air support!  Or some combat engineers to lay or clear a minefield for youl.  ;)

I may not have been an "03" but as an FSC, FO, NGLO and ground FAC I spent a fair amount of time humping the hills and sleeping in the mud of Okinawa, Camp Pendleton, Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg.  I considered the 9th Marines as one of the finest units I served with (and for those who watch Fox News, Lt Col Bill Cowan, USMC (Ret) and I served together in the 9th Marines.  He was the S-2 and I was the FSC).

But, as you can probably tell, at heart I'm really a gunner, so I'll stick with St Barbara for a patron saint.

Spanish Marshal,

Infanty and Airborne, and excellent combination. I was once part of that brotherhood.

  Hi Major Lewis.

Sir, the Spanish Legion is an elite Unit of the Spanish Army. It´s a regular unit, but it has a special spirit. This Unit  picks up the oldest traditions of the old "Tercios de Flandes", old Spanish Infantry Units of the XVI and XVII centuries that combatted in Europe.

This Unit was created at first of the twenty years  of last century, to image and likeness of the French Foreign Legion, to combat in the Spanish territories in the North of Africa, (today the current Morocco). It is the most honored unit in the Spanish army. (Sorry I don´t known if this is correct in english, my bag english grammar).

The image is of an Corporal, dress for parade, with the pet of the Unit. The other image is the emblem of the Legion, the real crown and the three weapons of the Tercios de Flandes, the pike, the harquebus and the crossbow.

   Thanks for you attention Sir.
