Rework the 50-95 for 50-70
« on: February 15, 2023, 08:28:43 PM »
Dear Sanhedrin,
I know this topic has made its way around but I’d like to revisit it. BLUF is modifying the 1876 in 50-95 to shoot the 50-70 Government.
The thing that won’t let me sleep is that the caliber and the cartridge overall length are workable AND historically appropriate.
Lucky me I have a first edition of African Rifles and Cartridges ;-) but any edition has Taylor’s imperative that slow moving HEAVY FOR CALIBER bullets are hard to beat for big game hunting…the 50 express doesn’t have that but the 50-70 does. Custer the hunter/soldier agrees with Taylor the hunter/writer.
Lucky me I have an extra Uberti barrel in 40-60. How would I go about this conversion????
Thanks In Advance!!! All positive negative and downright abusive comments earnestly solicited!!!

I am kinda puzzled
you want to make your 50/95 into a 50/70 govt ??????no ???
you want to convert your 50/95 to 40/60 ????? why ????
want to shoot big long boolits in a 40/60 ?????? whats barrel twist ? will it work - second part of that is do you want a blackpowder round or are you going smokeless - the big boolit will steal powder space in these short cases
you want to convert your 40/60barrel to50/70govt via a rebore and rechamber ????? - again why ??? but it might work the rim size of all these is close enough  maybe dont have to rework the bolt and extractor .
last question - are you sufferin cabin fever and dreamin up stuff to do  ::)

YAHOO!! REPLIES!!
THANKS, Gents, for the interest
Well, first off, in the Old Testament the Great Sanhedrin was the collection of wise old judges that determined the rightness or wrongness of current events across the nation….I wuz just sorta giving you all that honor in the hope that you’ll undoubtedly judge my idea and give me good advice.
What I want to do is drill out one of my spare barrels and rechamber it to 50-70 with a twist fast enough to stabilize bullets of over 400 grains.
BLUF iOS an acronym for “Bottom Line Up Front” which obviously I didn’t do too well…

Have you tried a 400-grain bullet in your 50 95 yet? It may just work as these repops that are selling lately have a twist @ 1 in 24".
I'm pretty happy with the 350gr bullets, I figure another 50 grains would still work with this twist. I'd like to get another mold made for a 300gr bullet so I can shoot faster  with less drop. I'm shooting black powder so the only way I can get more speed is a lighter bullet. I don't think there is anything in North America that this fifty caliber 300gr bullet wouldn't kill.
Keep in mind, the 76 action isn't considered a strong action.

Me thinks you should do these shenanigans to an 86, not our beloved 76. That's my vote.  :)

512138 Ideal/Lyman flat nose at 430 gr. works excellent in the Uberti 1-48" twist. Large grease grooves for black and fine 200 yd. accuracy.

THANKS to all!!! This is exactly why I call you gents the Sanhedrin! I have some RCBS dies for the 50-95 and plenty of brass from Steinel/Cimarron… I need to either get a 512138 mold or find someone who makes that, LRP’s etc and venture into the wilderness of reloading! I didn’t really want all that machining, etc I just wanted a bigger projo!
(Y’all probably thinking I should “stick” to drumming)
