Disclaimer: I have not read this book (or even heard of it before a few minutes ago), but here is a link to download an ebook or scanned copy of Lincoln's Choice, by Justin Buckeridge.  The book appears to discuss the development and use of Spencers.  How accurate or useful it is is up to you.
