We've had a helluva blizzard move through Iowa in the past few days. There's 6 foot of snow where my shooting bench is, but you can still see the roof! It's supposed to be around 40 this coming wednesday. I think I'll toss the new 40 60  and assort shooting junk in the bucket of my Kubota 4X4 and see if I can make it to the 50 yard line and bang some steel. ;D

King,

The rifle is chambered in 45-75.  I was given the rifle by an older friend getting out of the sport due to age. I'd have been really PO'd if I'd bought it new and would have had a piece of Uberti's a**.  Since it was free, I'm still into it for considerably less than a new rifle.  It does, however, highly offend me that something came from the factory with that kind of problem.  I'm surprised the previous owner didn't do something about it.

The sad thing is that I have another friend with a Uberti '76 with the same kind of accuracy problems. His is chambered in 45-60.

Does your 45/75 have the "Uberti Chamber"? What that is, is the early chambers were cut with the shoulder too far forward. Mine is like that, doesn't hurt anything, can get a few grains more of black powder. Just wondering why the barrel was in such poor shape? Black powder rot?

My rifle literally had no chamber.  I chambered a dummy round, with the bullet seated to max length the action will handle.  I then used a bore scope to take a photo by inserting down the bore from the muzzle.  The round of ammunition was completely unsupported ANYWHERE, simply hanging in the middle of a "cavern". Even seated to max length, I measured 0.300" freebore to the rifling.

An absolute POS barrel. Through acquaintance with a gunsmith friend I've come across quite a few Uberti barrels with equally severe, if different, problems.  The only reason I kept this rifle is that I was given it and could invest the money to fix it without spending more than it was worth.

As far as shooting, only five shots fired since mid December. Four found their mark on three deer. Black powder & 335 gr RCBS in a 45-60. Would like to find a Lyman hollow point mold just for hunting. Maybe next season. I also need to spend some time with the chrony on current loads, locate next year's powder supply, cast bullets, etc. Well, I like to stay busy 😅

So a couple of times a year I host "The Boner Knob Shoot"- Yes, there is a mountain (hill up here) named that right above my house.  I pick an era, and the shooters draw one of three guns.  This year it was full size B.P. cartridge guns so the three firearms were an 1874 (Shiloh) Sharps, an 1884 trapdoor, and The 1876 9Uberti) in 45-60.  Anyway, after the 1st round there was enough time for all the shooters to pick another gun, and everyone picked the 1876 (except the guy who had shot her in the first round).  I reckon there is just something about lever guns.
