Octagonal barrel on SAA replica…..

I want an octagonal barrel. Yes I know it's not HC/PC, Colt never did it etc.  My Uberti isn't a museum piece and I like the look, and it's my gun......
I have about worn out my keyboard and my fingers searching for some information, but no luck.
Would anyone know the LENGTH of the barrel shank on an Uberti 1858, and the same measurement on the Cattleman? The diameter and TPI of both would also be helpful, as some websites disagree. If anyone has either one or the other, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you.

Abilene

Howdy.  I don't know  :D  .

But, the distance from the barrel shoulder to the back of the threads is a LOT longer on the '58, so you would definitely be cutting off some of the threads and adding a new forcing cone.  Getting your ejector housing to properly fit might be an issue as well, since those are designed/shaped to go on a round barrel.

I would be curious if Uberti and Pietta happen to use the same threads on their SAA repros, then you could use a Pietta octagon barrel and ejector housing like are on the Cimarron El Malo's (but sourcing those might be a problem).  Good luck.

I'm thinking this is not for CAS, but fyi a dovetailed front sight ('58) is not SASS-legal on a SAA-style gun, not sure about NCOWS but probably not.

Maybe just save what you would have spent on the parts and gunsmith work (unless you do it yourself) and put it toward an El Malo.  ;)

Thanks Abilene.  No, not for CAS, I have installed a .45 ACP cylinder, and I *think* .45 ACP is not legal in revolvers.  No,this one is just for me....
Looking at the design of the frames, I had ASSUMED the 1858 was longer, but I didn't want to spend money on a 'maybe'.
Pietta is metric, Uberti is SAE.
I am able to do the work myself.
Now, to try to nail down the diameter and tpi.  Most say they are the same, but a few people have given me different numbers.  Thanks again Abilene.  'Preciate 'cha.

You bet, good luck.  And just fyi the 45acp is allowed in both revolver and rifle for SASS (some folks modified their wild bunch rifles to use the same ammo for pistol and rifle).  Actually I know one guy who had a Marlin modified for 9mm, but the brass would bulge and not be reloadable, or something like that, so he got rid of it.

You could always email Uberti and ask the thread info?  Nothing to lose.  :)

I knew wild bunch shot 1911's, they're my favorite pistols, but for some reason I thought ACP revolvers were verboten.  Oh well....I also *thought* a lever action couldn't eat ACP ammo.  I learn something new every day.

They can't!  Unless they are modified by a talented gunsmith to do so.  :)

You said you can do the work, so pull the barrel and measure the threads. Once you thread the new barrel check the barrel cylinder gap and cut the forcing cone. Seems simple enough.

Hi Kent.  Yes, that is probably what is going to happen....I sent an email to Taylor's, asking if they will sell me a replacement barrel for the "drifter".  Simple, yes?  If not, your plan is up next.

Heck yes, that would be perfect.  If it is in stock.  But that is quite iffy.
If they don't have one, buy the Drifter.  Fit your 45acp cylinder to it.  Sell your Cattleman.   :)
