My semi-auto choice? 1911
« on: October 11, 2004, 03:44:39 PM »
Well, almost.  I decided I wanted a semi-auto for my second handgun for WASA CAS.  I have obtained a Colt M1991A1 ORM in a matte finish.  These were "reproduction" WWII that Colt marketed a few years ago.  Mine has the proper military sights, flat WWi 1911 MSH, paddle type hammer and is unmodified with no aftermarket parts.  I did choose to put a set of fully checkered, fancy figure wood grip panels on.  This model looks close to a pre-WWI Colt Government model.  I am going to try to hunt up a metal military MSH with the lanyard loop though.  So far as I have shot it, it is boring.  No malfunctions of any type.  I guess I will have to get a M1912 swivel cavalry holster for this 45 Auto.  I like this pistol.

Even though I prefer 19th century-style single-action revolvers, I have to admit that the 1911 pistol is probably the greatest handgun ever designed.  Heck, nearly a century later, it's still considered a premium duty pistol by law enforcement and some military units.  A timeless design.

If you think about it, the 1911 is the last Cavalry/Cowboy gun that was designed for use by horse mounted soldiers and well used by Texas Rangers as a replacement or back up to their Colt SAAs.  The 1911 has 2 safeties and a safety half cock notch and a lanyard loop in the mainspring with the horse mounted fighter in mind.  I like the 1911 a bit better than the SAA, but if you have a spare cylinder for .45 ACP, you can have both guns shooting the same ammo in the field or at the range.  The SAA is the grandfather of the 1911 and I have to have many examples of each in my battery.

I've been looking at the Auto Ordnance 1911 here lately. I have read some unflatteringly negative reviews about it. Sad considering that IT IS made in the USA. But if anyone out in CASCITY has one, I would like to hear from you. If they have kinks that need to be ironed out, could a gunsmith make these 1911s even better?
I would like to know soon.

My choices other than Auto Ordnance would be:
1. Springfield Armory (great gun I hear, but made somewhere else) ::)
2. Colt (THE obvious choice despite the price tag) ;D
3. USFA (Built better than the Colt from what I've read, but it's a steep price tag) :'(
A work in progress.

I shoot a stainless Springfield "Loaded" in IDPA.  For the first 4,000 rounds of it's life it was "box stock".  No mods, no trigger job, no special springs, and only a swap out of the wood grips for a set of Simonich "gunner" grips.  In all those rounds I only had two failure to feeds due to ammo and not the gun, and one failure to feed which was an out-of-battery which I cannot attribute to anything solid.  I would carry this gun everywhere if I could.  It's that good.

As it came.  Day 1 out of the box.

I've since taken it to the 'smith for a 5,000 rnd tune up, put on a green fiber optic front sight, installed a curved MSH and had him take the trigger pull down to a crisp 3.X lbs.

As it is today.  Alexander & Smith MSH w/ mag well, sand paper front strap grips, and the FO front sight.  My concessions for IDPA and "real world" carry.

I shoot a Charles Daly Superior 1911-A1.  Its an older model that they don't make any more.  But there new models are just as nice and the price isn't bad.  You might also check out the ones from Rock Island Arsenal they are priced fairly and a dealer I know says they are good guns.  Check them out on  www.gunbroker.com

Bristow Kid

My Charles Daly:

Not sure how many rounds through it I bought it used.  No work done to it.  It came standard with the hammer and trigger you see in pictures.  I have shot it a fair amount and only problems was due to ammo not feeding and that was a problem with the ammo not the gun.

I like my Para Model P10 and P12 because of the magazine capacity. I carried a Govt Mark 70 and a Combat Commander for several years as a Police Officer back in the early 70s.  Folks got a little edgy seeing the pistol being carried with the hammer cocked and locked. When I went to work as a Deputy Sheriff 25 years ago, the 45 Colt was not an option.  It was back to the revolver, either 38 or 357. In 85, they decided we could carry semiautos.  They had to be DA and either 9mm, 40, or 45. I opted for the 40 because of the knock down and mag capacity. The 45 was only available in a 7 or 8 round capacity.  I still like the 1911 style pistol, especially the ParaOrdnance.

I have to go with the  1911. I  grew up with one in my hand as my dad always owned and carried one. Its the firstpistol I ever sht probably.
Then I carried one throughout my Army MP service then later as A Deputy  I carried a colt Mark IV series 70..
No telling how many rounds through that weapon. Never a failure ,although it would occasionally stove pipe a round with range ammo.
I have to requalify with the department next month and it will be with the same old .45. You just cant beat perfection.

Don,

I concur.  In the field I have no choice but to carry the M9.  I've grown to respect that gun and have begrudgingly accepted it.  Maybe even like it, but don't tell no one!  But I'd carry the 1911 if given the choice.

In civilian clothes the 1911 is unfortunately relegated to IDPA and IPSC weekend sessions 90% of the time.  The.. .wait for it, Glock 23 serves concealed carry duty mostly.  Emotions aside, it's the best choice for my situation.  3 manual of arms to learn and keep track of.  Why do I always like to ice skate up hill?

It took me a long time to get on the Glock bandwagon, till I shot one. I bought a used Model 23 to carry in plain clothes. I took it to the range for quals a couple of weeks after I bought it. I had never shot a Glock before. I ended up shooting Expert with it and I was hooked. Now I have eight of them in 9mm, 357 Sig, 40, 10mm, and 45.

I'm about 34" waisted, 5' 11" and 220 lbs.  That 1911 prints on me from sun up to sunset, but I've only tried 3 holsters (including an inside the waistband).  My Glock 23 just works mo'bettah fo me.

Just short of 5’11” ‘n right at 200 lbs. Waist 38”. No trouble concealin’ the 26 with an extended floor plate. Usin’ a Fobus paddle right now. But there are times, like today, the thing gets dropped in my jacket pocket.

The same Fobus carries my 34 but I have to watch the outer wear or the muzzle is exposed. The other downside to that combo is the muzzle gets pushed into whatever I sit in or on.

Have fanny packs for both.

I am 6' and 290 lbs  the should holster I use keeps my 1911 close to my body and with a jacket on you cant even tell I am carrying.  But it all boils down to personal preference.  To each his own just like with cowboy guns some prefer Rugers or Colts,  But I like Remingtons.  Aint nobody right or wrong you shoot or carry what you like and are comfortable with.

Those baby Glocks are jest right to slip in your jacket pocket. The 26 is a little more managable than the 27. That 27 was hard for me to qualify with using full house 40s. My hands are big. I started using 23 mags in it when I qualified with it and the handling problem was solved. I never thought I would like a Glock.  Old habits are hard to break.

There are times I wish I'd bought a 19 but it is nice.

Shoot my clones with my little finger curled under the grip. That thing with Speer Gold Dots in it 'n without the after market floor plate(s) is hard to control. The floor plate increases the magazine capacity by a round.

The original trigger, serrated, has been changed out to a smooth 34 trigger. Night sights.
