The Milbank Primed 44 Winchester 73' Prototype Cartridge
« on: December 09, 2018, 11:20:11 PM »
I have written permission to share this from the current owner. This cartridge was very short lived. It is said that some of the very first rifles to be delivered were delayed until the boxer primed cartridges were released. Could be the reason that the only three first style 44/100 Winchester 73' cartridge boxes are filled with the boxer primers rather than the advertised Milbank primer.

This cartridge is offered for sale by the owner for $4,000

The "Dimpled" primer

First style 44/100 Winchester 73' Cartridge box featuring the dimpled Milbank primer.

I decided to have some fun so I cut down an RP case to 1.177" and inserted a 427098. I seated the bullet to give an AOL of 1.600 and this is the result...almost a spitt'n image of the exposed lube groove cartridge displayed on the label of the second style .44 Winchester 73' Cartridge box.

Exposed lube groove. AOL...1.600"...case length...1.177"

.44 Winchester 73' Second Style cartridge box...label features the cartridge with exposed lube groove.

Interesting stuff. Is that "estimate- 4000-5000" referring to the value of that one cartridge...a box of such cartridges...or does it mean something else? Inquiring minds want to know (smile).

Yes, the value. Just below the photo I posted he is asking $4,000 for the single cartridge. What a piece of rare history!!!

The first style label cartridge box I posted sold, full of boxer primed cartridges, for $6,000

Well, that pretty much explains why I'm not a cartridge collector. (LOL)

So, uh, not likely to find one in a garage sale.  Won't stop me from hoping, though.  :D
