OK, save yer money and buy fish.  Ice fishing sucks, either you are cold and bored and catch nothing or you have fun, catch lots of fish, then realize yoiu now have to clean frozen fish.  Been there, done that till my brains came in. ;D

Seeing as how I can't get halibut, salmon, talapia, shrimp, scallops, prawns, and clam from a hole in the ice, I have limited my ice fishing to the meat counter at Ralph's, Stater Brothers, and Von's, with some little bit at Liborio, a Cuban market here in town.

Besides, I live in southern California so I don't have to get cold to eat well.   ;D

Yea, I have enough tied up in ice equipment, to buy a couple more winchester 73's.
Then add the time in to collect and prep fish, does make the fish at the market pretty cheap.

Yep!  That's why I do all my hunting in the woods and hills at the back of those same stores.  My Dad quit hunting when I left for the Army. I asked him why and he said that when he calculated the cost of clothing, camping gear, guns, ammo, food, gas, and wear and tear on his car and equipment, he figured venison at a buck and a half a pound and most foul at about a buck twenty."  That was 1965 when I could buy filet mignon at under a buck ten a pound and cigarettes were a buck fifty a carton in the PX, or seventeen cents a pack.

I enjoyed the wood and hills, but the hunting was only fun until I pulled the trigger.

When I lived on Galveston Bay we'd wait for 3 or 4 days of freezing weather in a row. We'd go out in a boat and set over a deep hole and fish for Gulf Trout. It was easy to catch as many as 50 to 75 fish averaging a pound to a pound and a half each. When we lost feelings in our hands we'd go home. Always cleaned fish in the kitchen sink. It was strickly 'meat fishing'. We would have plenty of fish all Winter. Never saw any ice out on the bay.

cook with a dusting of flour and lemon pepper. Fried in 1/4" oil in pan. Makes great sandwitches also.

Now I never said nuthin' bad about eatin' them fish, just the catchin' and cleanin' in winter.  Fact is if you were closers I'd say bring em on, we'll drag out the camp gear and I'd evel let ya watch me cook them, fact is I'd do a couple sides, some bread and desert. ;D

Damn Forty Rod, those were the days wern't they? Premium beer at the NCO/EM club was 15 cents a bottle/can and cocktails a quarter. A good cheese burger was about thirtyfive cents.
You have made me wax nostalgic, thanks.
