Back to the omnium-gatherum today.
I was off Saturday (one of 2 my scheduled days) having swapped out a day with the operations curator.

Looking for cool down this weekend, reached low 80's yesterday rain is forecasted and temp's in the mid 40's on Friday.

Good morning and happy February to you all. 28 here right now, supposed to get up to 31 with more ice and freezing rain incoming later today. Driveway is sloped and a sheet of ice, so unless we have a medical emergency, I ain't going anywhere! My Boss called a while ago, store is closed again today, he's not gonna have anyone get hurt trying to get in. And he just bought a new Point of Sale system in January, we've had a nice gal in the store inventorying everything the last week. Well, Apple decided that since we are an EVIL gunstore, they have cancelled and shutdown our new system along with his other 2 [non-gun related] business accounts!

Greetings all.

Warmed up today to a whopping 26 degrees (that being above zero, and in Fahrenheit ::) ).

I however am not enjoying the weather, as I am laid up in bed, having been thoroughly thrown and stomped by ice and gravity into the stove-up realm. While picking up a 4” flex hose yesterday I managed to slip on the ice and slide down a little embankment…right into an open manhole. Made it about 6 feet  down before an unceremonious meeting with the concrete bottom. Walked away (or rather crawled/limped) with:

-several bruised ribs, one broken
-at least 4 bruised vertebrae, sacral and lumbar (fortunately none of those broke!)
-bruised pelvic wing
-majorly sprained back muscle
-partially torn tendon in left hip
-pretty good cut up the left on my tush to mid back (doc used superglue instead of stictches/staples because pants are a necessity in MT)
-scratched cornea in left eye
-various other bumps and bruises of varying magnitude

So, I’m not going to work for a few days it seems, considering I can hardly get out of bed by myself. And walking farther than the John is not happening either. I declined the offered hydrocodone prescription, a choice which I am somewhat beginning to regret as Aleve only does so much. But I suppose I’ll live.

Y’all watch that ice.

Well, 28 F here right now, going to hit 24 tonight, with freezing rain, sleet and ice supposed to hit around 11pm til daylight. Yeesh, our store has been closed the last 2 days and the only things moving on our street has been a few 4 wheelers. Supposed to start slowly warming sometime tomorrow through the weekend, when it's supposed to get to around upper 50s.

Dang dude, that's a wreck ! very sorry, but glad it was not far worse.
Declining the hydrocodone prescription, might have been a wise call, sometimes the side effects can be nasty.
You might try Xtra strength Tylenol back relief.
Aleve and Ibuprofen never much worked for my assorted mishaps, and these have side effect too  ::)

Got up to try and see the Green Comet
its closest approach is this morning, in our northwest sky I read.
Fog defeated the attempt; I don't know why I bothered I know from past experience atmospherics so often spoil celestial events.  :(
But nothing ventured nothing gained, I suppose.

I'm going look at a Replica BP rifle for a fellow today.
The owner said he assembled it from a kit in the 70's, I think.
I'm not sure if it's Italian or Spanish manufactured. I only glanced at it in the rifle sock.
The main spring seems to cock it, the trigger(s) just won't drop the hammer.

Used to decline the Narco's, my family Dr told me to quit playing hero and take them, older guys heal better that way.  Hydro one of several codeine ones can cause some side affects, if you have any they can switch to other than codeine.  They work good with me though, you can send any extra to me. :P  My stash is out and no reason to get more right now but the 6 in my drawer have twice kept me from the ER of late.   Next time likely will require a trip but that's OK, we're friends there.   They are still busy, need to try and hold off if I do to late night.  And not right after the Super Bowl.  Nobody shows up they say till the game is over, I mean, my drunken broken leg can wait. ::)

Afternoon all.

I’m still alive. I was originally going to say “still kicking,” but that’s not particularly true. Not a lot of kicking going on here. ::)

Recovery is progressing. It seems, as I can see from my scratched eye again. Swelling all over has also gone down significantly. The transition from laying to sitting and then to standing is also slightly easier, but still painful. Per Dr recommendation, I’m alternating between laying on a heated blanket to standing/walking for a few minutes every hour which is seemingly helping with overall mobility and discomfort.

Mod 20s in Missoula, headed for the mod 30s. Cloudy but nothing forecast to come out of said clouds.

As far as my injuries go, the cut on my back is healing nicely, and the glue is coming off as planned. Most external bruising is healing up or gone. The sprained muscle/tendon duo are healing and I can almost get out of bed without making weird noises. None injuries are still present and happy to remind me of such, but they are at least tolerable.

Well I injured myself but I'm loosing my touch, used to be cool about it like TK, but no more, didn't even have the ice outside for an excuse, no ice anymore and most of it happened inside, mine actually turned out for the good in the end.   But I did get the overnight stay at the fancy hotel. ;D  Actually his was more dramatic from a visual put it on Youtube stand point but mine required precise planning or you would think it did.

Thursday was feeling decent so was doing some chores at a slow place, had some trash to take out of the basement because one I'm stubborn and it seems pleas for help get ignored, maybe not now. ::)

OK, put maybe 15 pounds in the bag, and it seemed a bit heavy when I bent to pick it up but did anyway, carried it up and out to the can and came back in with no resting.  Got in and was a bit winded, no more than if I'd of did a good cardio, so I sat down, and then my chest started hurting, not a winded lower hurt, but the left side into the left shoulder.  Called Rita and she was almost home, wanted to know what was up and told her just come in.  She got in and I told her and I said just take me so we grabbed my bag and went, that way it don't upset the dog and we can actually get there faster.  Almost fell on the stairs, but got in the car.   We got there and she went in and got someone and they brought a chair and back to triage I went, got covered with stickers and wires, nope, not an active one, either over or hasn't really started.  Back to a room I went and got IV, blood draws and a shot of happy which made me fell better because my chest still hurt.  Cardio lady came in, not mine but the on call.  She said the blood test did not show I'd had one recently but due to my history she wanted to keep me over night because there had to be something wrong, do some more tests in the morning because I'm almost due for them and we can get them all done and if things are OK I can go home by evening and if not we already will have me a room, kinda important right now.

Well by 2 am the happy shot had worn off and I was in pain again, not a normal thing for what might be going on.  Did all the tests yesterday, and cardio guy by this time and I discuss it.  We both came to the same conclusion, the area where it hurt was where they harvested the parts for my surgery and have had a cyst removed on that side since, with ugly scaring.  I pulled the stuff there because it was finally swelled up and it was sensitive to the touch.  So I panicked  which according to him is a good thing because as he put it, most people who die from a heart attack don't think they are having one.   I showed him this Sept 2019 picture and told him that was taken 2 months before I knew I had heart problems and we found out I did because I went to my GP and complained the Protonix was not taking care of my acid reflux anymore.   ::)

Anyway the conclusion from yesterday is that my heart continues to improve and looks real good for a 66 year old man who has had several minor attacks and a quad bypass.   The getting wore out easy is from all the crap the last year or so and I am doing better than one should really expect.  He said to keep at what I'm doing and give it another month or so before trying the gym and don't over do on anything and just stop when I reach that brick wall and either go work on the computer or take a nap with my dog.

On a 5 pound limit till Monday due to the cath lab and going up the big artery in my leg.  The yesterday nurse was cool and fun and after the lay flat limit was up she said I had to go two laps in the hallway but resting was permitted and if all my blood stayed in I could go home.  Still yellow down there so that means I'm not low on iodine, if it soaks up in your skin in less than an hour you are low.  ;D

About 61,000 Puerto Ricans served in the Korean War, including about 18,000 who enlisted in the continental United States Puerto Ricans distinguished themselves as part of the 65th Infantry Division, the “Borinqueneers,”

The Museum hosted the Congressional Gold Medal ceremony for the Korean War Veterains held Friday 2/3/2023.
US Congressman Soto presented the Gold medals, to the 65th Regiment and several surviving members in attendance.
This is a second ceremony the Museum has hosted; the 1st was for WW2 Merchant Marines & Navy Armed Guard last fall.
Saturday's attendance was bustling due to the prior day's media coverage.

In other news, we will host a Theatrical Group and their performances of "Biloxi Blues"
live performances in the coming weeks.

On the way home from church today, my wife spotted a classic car show at our local supermarket. They had some cool stuff. Lots of late model Corvettes and Mustangs. The Blue Mustang is a 1969 model. I had a Red 1969 Mustang GT Fast-back in the day. Wish I still had it.

The winner, IMHO, was a 1950 Chopped Red Merc with lake pipes. Click this link for a slide show:  http://www.johnnymccrae.com/Car-Show.html

34 with snow flurries, heading for 35. Big temperature swing there ::)

The doc cleared me for light duty at work today, so I’m going to go do some small stuff around the shop. Recovery has been good so far, with pretty much all external bruising gone. The rib is painful, but that’s not anything particularly worrisome as I’ve experienced that one before. The biggest pain right now is that tendon, which I just keep stretching every so often. One of the best ways to stretch it (ie most pain relief) that I have found is the “front leaning rest” position. The basic training flashbacks are more painful than the rib/tendon combo, so it’s a bit distracting I guess ::)

You’re lookin’ a little lonely here.  Thanks for the coffee.  It’s stopped sno*ing here for about 5 days now, and the temps been up in the mid to high 40’s trying to melt most of the white stuff here on the valley floor.  We do have a measured snowpack at 200% of normal up on the Hill, so we’re now thinking about the possible flooding along the Truckee River this spring.  The good thing is Lake Tahoe and the other area reservoirs have plenty of room to store the melt.  We’ll see what March and April do as far as precip. goes and cross our fingers.

Ditto on the back aching, :( mine is barking some more than normal today.

Should have been a normal day off, but my counterpart (the other curator) lost his keys to the Museum.
With out them, there is No entry,  So he called me in a panic unable to open the doors.
I'm about a 35-minute drive from the place, so with my rushing getting dressed and out the door I was there to open up for him in about 38 minutes  :-\  Kinda pushed the speed limits, I did !
He (BTW lives literally 5 minutes away) and three volunteers and 4 light duty temps were waiting for me.  :P
To my knowledge, no guests were inconvenienced. when we opened 1 hour late. ::)

I'm home now, and I suppose the Museum Director who arrived about 12:30 P will need to get a set of keys made so they can close tonight a 6PM.
 Oh well....poop happens

He hasn't, they are not marked, so if found no one would what know they were for.
In addition, should they be used, the perpetrator would not know the security code, we have motion detection alarms and cameras.

G'morning Gents

I was asked to look at a BP rifle that had a couple of issues.
The gun turned out to be a circa mid 70's CVA Hawkens, the old fellow said he got it 45 or so years ago.
He had never shot it and it has been in the gun sock in closet all this time.
Clearly someone had put a scope mount on it, but the scope was long gone.
There was a ramrod, but it was about 4" too short having been snapped off at one end.
Also, the hammer would cock, but would not fall with trigger pull.

Pulling the lock, I found the internals bone dry and with light dusting of surface rust. I disassembled
cleaned off the oxidation and Lighty lubed and reassembled. The set triggers were not adjusted well and once that was righted the action worked just fine.
I made a new ramrod, and I also decided, if he were to shoot it a ball starter would be handy.
So, using the remaining left over cutoff of the hickory ramrod blank, I started to fashion one.
For a final (TIP) I used a once fired brass 38 special case, which I turned down the rim some and pushed out the spent primer and epoxied it on.
I needed a hand grip of some sort, so I went to ACE Hardware, I went back and asked the friendly, helpful hardware man... I mean, that what their jingle say's, right ?

I asked, " Do you have wooden balls ?"  ... He said " WHO, the hell do you think I am?    Pinocchio  ?

Oh ! and coffee is on  ;D

I agree.

Morning all.

Weather is currently 29 and foggy from my old stomping grounds. We got in about 7pm last night to much fanfare from family and little reaction from the cats.

On the docket today is some laundry, taking the dog for a walk and possibly some canning of cherry pie filling. I also need to put a handle on an axe at some point.

Morning folks! 55 here right now and pouring rain, supposed to hit 65 today. If'n the Missus feels like it I will take her out for Valentine's Day today, if not, tomorrow is supposed to be real pretty, so we will do it then. Got an estimate in on putting nice windows up on the back porch so we can use it year round and it was good, so we will be getting that done in the next few weeks.
Y'all have a good day!

Woke up at 5AM with major pain in my back, just above and middle of my left buttock.
NO position would render any relief, cross between a cramp and a stab with blunt pipe.
It felt like I might imagine being SHOT  :o
Took Ibuprofen 800mg and bit later Tylenol, with no effect....
At 7:30 I had to call in to the museum, and had called my Dr. at 8, I got lucky they had a 10AM cancelation.

Diagnoses... SI- Sacroiliitis inflammation...I got a shot (actually two) same needle. in two locations.
Sent home with an ice pack and Ice Cold Analgesic Gel rub on.
The Ibuprofen and Tylenol, caught up to me and I zoned out.
I slept about 3 hours which was NOT possible before I saw the Doc.

Now I can function, pain is greatly abated, I can sit, stand, even lie back and get easy.
I pray I'm on the mend and worst is behind.

Take ‘er easy with that one Major. Mrs TK has SI flare ups and is put out of commission for a day or two. JR Watkins red liniment helps her a lot.

In other news: my last step before being officially a U.S. Forest Service year-round employee is a poking and prodding session with the sawbones. And there’s a hiring bonus that nobody told me about, so that’s helpful.

Sorry, I laughed on that one, so glad I had that surgery, all that stuff has been gone.

Get the day off, no one is forcing me to go anywhere today, not sure how much, don't care.  Wife and I decided if they need the kid at her work bad enough they can figure out how not us.  A friend is one of the managers at a restaurant, they begged him to come in on day off and now he has a wrecked car.  Going to cancel my Tomorrow Dr appointment and Rita is likely to do the same for work.  John came by and did our steps and Rita gave him some extra and he'll come back later and do the rest, he can go help people who want to go somewhere first.  Could get out of the driveway but not much else.

Opened the back door, Riley went out, turned around and looked at me with sad eyes, told him to go pee, he ran behind the garage, likely did and came back on the run, him and little cat are on the couch, raised a sissy Lab and don't care. ::)

I got through the day, on just two Tylenol.  :)  thanks for the best wishes  :)
The shot the Doc gave me was the BOMB ! abating the pain wise,
side effect = I could get shingles like blisters on the area around the injection site.
So far, nothing is a popping, maybe 2 or three days to go  :-\
I had the Shingles shot a few years ago and that may prevent the side effect.

Off tomorrow, back in Sat & Sun.

Evening all.

Pleasant day in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. High of 52, scattered clouds, light breeze.

Had a relatively productive day as well. Took some bigger things to the dump for my parents (an old washing machine, and broken treadmill and an entertainment center that met an untimely demise during repositioning), stopped by the forest service offices in town just for say hi (turns out the only one there was the top boss that I’ll be under), and a fishing excursion. Mrs TK caught her first trout, which was a nice 13” rainbow. I landed three, only one of which was kept due to the hook tearing its gills.

Regarding my recovery effort, things seem to be looking up. I took the dog for a 3 mile walk up and down a decent hill and only experienced minor discomfort. Still painful if I lean too far to one side, but mostly functional otherwise.

I fell out of bed at 4:30, not happened in 60 years, was running to school because I was late, stopped to light a cigar and fell off a cliff, between that and falling over with the groceries the night before has me sore. Not doing much today, wife has sty in eye and called off work.  Was going to run the kid to school, must have got the Jeep car thing over the snow plow hump. Made sourdough whole wheat yesterday in my new pan/stovetop DO.  Ordered it off A zon, popped up in a ad for cheap, wanted to see if a preseason China pot that was not polished was as bad as all the Flat Earthers and No Soapers say.  Nope, washed it and gave it a spray of Olive juice and the bread dropped out, second loaf so another myth busted.  Learned yesterday that soaking cast iron in vinegar to remove rust for more than 30 minutes will soften it.  LOL, damn fool yuppies and their myths.

BTW really don't feel bad about the oven, USA made Lodge costs twice as much and uses pig iron bought from China and they company has several other sins.  Oh and they enamel coated stuff is straight China.   And a true American made one was about 5 times as much aka old one someone restored or says they did.

Up to the 50s today and clear. Man, the shop was BUSY today. There was a gun show the next town over, so we didn't know if we would see many folks, but evidently it wasn't a very good show, according to our customers who had been there. Working again today, I have to cover additional days, because the other Curator gave his notice.
He is taking over an ACW Museum directors' position in Mississippi.
The announcement was rather abrupt.   :(
Since there is or was just him, our director and me, We will have to use our Volunteers, in the short term.
The 48 continuous hours of operation required his 40 hours, my 16 and the directors 32 hours weekly.

I'm hoping, I will get back to my normal 16 operational hours quickly.  :-X

Morning all.

32 and actively snowing in Missoula. Supposed to get several inches out of this storm.

The final portion of the drive last night, from Idaho Falls to Missoula was somewhat uncomfortable. Lots of glaze ice. I-90 between Drummond and Clinton was really bad, to the point we were doing 25 or less in places, and cars off the side everywhere. The eastbound lane was totally blocked by a trio of semis all tangled up across both lanes (and both shoulders, and most of the center divider). But we emerged unscathed on the other side around midnight.

Also of note for those who partake in the Electronic Pony Express system known as Instagram, Mrs. TK started a page devoted to her horse training endeavor, most photography done by Yours Truly. It’s called JPZillion_training, should you feel inclined to look.

30 and overcast, looking for an inch or two of white later in the day. Tonight through Thursday night we’re supposed to go back to the other side of 0, which adds difficulty to the whole “doing outdoors work” dynamic.  ::)

In other news, my Ford decided it doesn’t want to start yesterday. Suspect the engine computer went bad, as it’s been showing signs of that issue for about a year. The part has a roughly 15-20 year service life, and this one is 27 years old, so it isn’t totally unexpected. Should just be a $150 part though, so that’s helpful.

Guessers predict we will see 90° today then back to the mid upper 80's for the weekend...

And speaking of weekends, I will be manning the Museum Saturday & Sunday going forward.
With the resignation of the other curator, we've done some a switching around.
The good news I'l no longer cover Wednesday, YEAH ! the weekday traffic both morning and evening
has gotten quite heavy.
I live 28 miles from the U-SEE-Um, in the morning I'd battle work bound commuters and School bus stoppings.
Then there is more often than not, a delaying fender bender because commuters bounce off of others.
It takes an hour + sometimes just to get in on weekdays.
In the evening, Disney traffic joins work exiting commuters for a gridlocked rush hour plus.

Weekends are a pleasant breeze, the drive in is 32 minutes door to door, and 5 days off.

So, I am stoked to work weekends. :)

it is nice out now at 69° and a tad foggy. It will be 86° from 12 PM to 5 PM ish.

Had to get a new Batt for the John Deere,
gee's they are proud of their DECAL + 35.00 at JD, compared to the same size & cranking amps at Tractor Supply.
Tractor Supply it was then, plus I get my $10 core back.

Battery installed in a snap, and cranks over great !  I could run the core back  :-\  eh...feels more like a Monday thing.

Looking forward to the pix's of the New to you Smith  :)

I thought things might be slowing down around here with the wife gone for three weeks, but NOT TRUE.  ???

First, she got a fender bender from a lady that didn’t believe in lane lines, sharing insurance, or drivers license and drove off (I do believe that’s called “leaving the scene of an accident”) but that is being taken care of.  But I had to get her car over for an estimate and repair schedule with her in Oregon. DONE! ::)

Second, clothes washer repair visit she scheduled before leaving for Oregon.  DONE! ::)

Third, clothes dryer vent cleaning she scheduled before leaving for Oregon.  DONE! ::)

Fourth, Window installation for front of house windows to fix messed up order (ordered windows with grids but came with plain panels).  Scheduled before leaving for Oregon.  DONE! ::)

The last three sent the cats into hiding each day. ;)

Then the battery in the 4 Runner decided to croak. DONE! :P

The good thing that’s happening around here is sn*w!  We are getting another 6 to 8 inches over the weekend.  More than that on the Hill.  The last report is over 400” in the Tahoe area and the ski hills are taking lift tickets thru Memorial Day.

I’m just glad we are close to 800’ above the Truckee River when this all melts and comes thru downtown!!  ;D ;D ;D

Spent a good coupla hours yesterday looking for my 38S&W dies, they have not so far been located.  :-[
After some thought, I have decided the last time I used them was pre- Covid panic-demic.
I have some 200 grain Matt's bullets in route, arriving today, tomorrow or maybe Monday.
I may have to call Titan Reloading and replace my missing set, which should be just what is needed to locate my hidden set  ::).
No huge deal, except it's annoying as "HE double toothpicks" gonna go out and look again  ::)

Remember the best way to find them is to buy replacements.  However if the replacements come with a free refund policy you won’t find the old ones until the day after the policy expires.!

Yes Sir, a Corollary which describes a result that is the natural consequence of something else.
Like...wash the car and it rains.

Off to the U-see-um shortly, Saturday & Sundays are now my gig.

I get to stay home today, some of it with just the animals, will probably clean again.  On days I have to run I get tired and don't get much done.  Slept almost 10 hours so that helps, going to have coffee and set up the weeks pills before I get started much.  Got to tend sourdough stuff, dietician lady I had to talk to on Tuesday was decent to talk to.  She understood the way good sourdough lowers carbs and helps the Type 2.

Light rye.  A dark rye is working, I like sourdough because I can get it ready and pretty much bake it when I want.

Was reading some more material about sourdough and they were talking about the 3 types, they were more kind, I call it real sourdough and pretend but what ever.

Type 1-Sourdough starter is the only leavening, often takes days, the real sourdough, made by people who understand it, some are yuppie creatures that are into weird ferment teas and who knows what because they think their gut bacteria needs replaced all the time.

Type 2-Made with a live starter but often has yeast added, commonly made by Yuppies who often call and ugly loaf of bread Artisan to cover up failure. ;)

Type 3-The stuff from most bakeries and the type from fast food places, made by adding dried sourdough starter that comes in 50 pound bags to the dough to make it sourdough flavor.  ::)

Since the other curator, resigned, I've been asked to cover some of his hours.
In the short run that's OK, But I hired on for just 2 days a week and being retired that's all I wanted.
The Director says he has a candidate or at least some kind of plan...
I was to switch to Sat. Sun.... perfect because of weekday traffic congestion.
I was just asked to continue to cover Wednesday and Sat Sun....
I agreed to next week, but beyond that just 2 days "PLEASE"

Evening all.

Finally got above freezing here today. Well, they called it 33 degrees anyway: none of the ice melted though.  In any case, I took the opportunity to spend most of my morning working on my truck. Got the engine control computer out (only broke a couple other things in the process. None of them were important, but the running board was disappointing), and as I suspected three of the capacitors inside were the culprits. I had hoped to be able to just replace them, but they had leaked their alkali juices onto the board and made it unsalvageable(it actually ate through the board itself in one place, and dissolved pins off of the trans. control chip and ignition control chip). So I have a new one coming by mail, hopefully arriving Tuesday.

In other news, I got kicked by a baby horse today while rescuing it from a tangle of fencing. Fine way to show appreciation. It didn’t get me too hard, just a glance on the side. Fortunately not the side with injured rib at least.

Slim, your reports make even more glad I moved out of Cheekago all them years ago! Yikes, that makes my ears hurt even thinking about those temps and sleet and...
I feel guilty sayin' it was 70 degrees and sunny here today, the Pear Trees out front are starting to bloom. Pulling a few hours at the shop this week. Getting the taxes done tomorrow, hope we don't need to pay out this year.
Anyway, y'all have a good evening.
