I have recently bought a Uberti 1873 Winchester Carbine in .44-40. Most of my loadings for the gun will be reloads. I was just wondering what kind of performance and velocity any of you have been able to SAFELY (I know its not a 92 and am not looking to make it a .458 Winchester Magnum) generate in said gun with various powders (smokeless, black and black sub)

My choice for smokeless loads for some time has been an Accurate Molds 43-214C bullet designed by our own W44WCF (http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=43-215C-D.png (http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=43-215C-D.png)), Starline brass, CCI or Winchester LP primers and Unique powder.

I agree with Coal. I use the RCBS 44-200-FP and Unique per the powder manufacturer.

Actually ....... I cannot contribute anything substantial to the OPs Questions ;). I don't shoot 44-40. Nor 38-40. Not even 32-20. Didn't stay in a Holliday Inn Express (that I'll admit). However, were it I working up a load, I'd be looking at a 200Gr projectile and BP or my favorite Sub. But since I'm not ......... just feel free to ignore this addition. It's of no practice value.

Just out of curiosity, can a 240 gr JHP bullet be loaded effectively in a .44 cartridge?

Sure. Just pay attention to your overall length and crimp.

I cannot answer your question either...first 'cause I don't have a 1873, and second, because I haven't tried to get perfection out of the old 44 WCF.
But I have a Uberti 1860 Henry and here's what I've tried so far, and like a lot.
200 gr. cast bullets lubed with SPG
Fed LP Primers
Winchester brass - OAL 1.592"
5.6 gr. IMR 700 X for velocity 1055 fps
Accurate for gongs out to 200 m offhand
200 gr. cast bullets lubed with SPG
Fed LP Primers
Winchester brass - OAL 1.592"
6.1 gr. Trail Boss for velocity 984 fps
Feels like a light load but vel. says otherwise
Shoots higher than previous load because of longer barrel time (lower velocity)
200 gr. cast lead bullets lubed with SPG
compressed load of FFFg GOEX Holy Black...30 gr. I think
Fed LP Primers
have not Chrono'd...love to shoot them - use 'em for all CAS work

Well, my results have been, roughly, as follows out of my 20 inch Uberti 1873 Winchester Carbine
Cleanshot (BP Sub): 1230 ft per second
Commercial Ammo Reloader: 1230 ft per second
8.0 grains of Unique: 1181 ft per second
Pyrodex FFFG: 1181 ft per second
Pretty impressive

I may be an old grouch, but I really don't care how FAST the bullet goes I am interested in WHERE it goes.

Fast is fine but accuracy is final
As long as the bullet hits exactly where I point the gun at any range what difference how long it takes to get there?
