What Accurate 40cal bullet mold do you use for 38/40 rifle
« on: March 29, 2022, 06:43:07 PM »
I want to buy a crimp grooved bullet mold for a magazine rifle & pistol.  I think the least expensive is an Accurate aluminum mold.  I have believed in staying with the original old Winchester / Ideal bullet designs for most of my reloading/shooting.  Both BP and smokeless loads will be used in the rifle.

This mold will be used mainly for the smokeless rounds.

BP will use the original Win, Ideal or Lyman design bullets.

What Accurate mold do you use or what one would you recommend?

Thanks,
BRS

I use a variant of this design in my 44s, and it is superb.  I do shoot a lot of BP, but this works just as well with smokeless.

I use a five gang 40-180C mould and have had very satisfactory results with it in my original Marlin 1889 and Winchester 1873. I must confess I only use smokeless loads with both rifles. I have always been impressed with the quality of the Accurate Moulds.

I use this in a AWA Lightning, Uberti '73 and a Remington 14 1/2 and a number of different handguns all 38-40. Always a solid performer, Arsenal Molds 40-205RF,  205 grain, nice big lube groove, suitable for black or smokeless. I have a number of Arsenal molds, they are on par with NOE or Accurate.

NickD, I know this is late in coming back with questions but I have done more looking and measuring.  I also sent of a message to Accurate with questions.

So here goes -- 1.  What diameter and tolerances did you ask for when you ordered your mold?  I am thinking 0.402 for me and the positive tolerance.  2. What diameter do you size to after molding?  I was planning on sizing to 0.402 smokeless for rifle/pistol then thought about using the same mold at 0.401 sizing for blackpowder.   3. What alloy do you cast and what do your bullets weigh?  I am looking at this 40-180C but plan on using pure (99%) lead (as original bullets were produced).  My 99% from the Win/Ideal/Modern Ideal molds all come out at 182 grains.  Hope the 40-180C produces the same weight.  Tom could not tell me the pure lead weight for this mold.

Thanks
BRS

The molds have was specified for .403 to suit my Marlin 1889
The mould casts a bullet of .4034 and I size it at .403
The mix I use is quite hard equivalent to a Lyman #2 mix and as cast the bullets weigh 170 grains. I have  not cast with pure lead but obviously they will be a few grains heavier.
In terms of accuracy they take no prisoners I have tried other molds but this is the oneto go for.
