I have a couple of USFA's that I consider "collectable."  First, and foremost, is a .38 cal.,  1851 Navy Richards Mason conversion.  It is my understanding that no more than 35 of these were made before USFA abandoned the project.  The presentation case was made by Bill Shumate at www.billscases.com . The USFA label was modified by me.  The macro setting on my camera caused a bit of distortion to the picture.

My other collectable is one of the now discontinued 16" Buntlines with skeleton shoulder stock.

So...  What USFA guns would you consider to be "collectable?"  Any one of their percussion revolvers?  First models of the Omni-Potent?  The Henry Nettleton series?

Beautiful guns, CW. How 'bout a bigger pic so we can see the engraving a little better? Are you registered with USFACSS yet? If not, let me know and I 'll add you to the list.

I am registered with the forum, but not with USFACSS.  I took the pix with my camera phone as I have no other way to do it other than my wifes 12 MegaPixel camera.  Let me tinker with images she has taken and see what I can do.

Sent you a message w/ art attached, or www page where you can see essentially the same.  Only dif is that I ordered the absolute whitest Ivory I could get.  The art work is tiny dots filled in with ink.  You can post it if you like, but I opted for the safe side.  The artist who actually did mine was KDH, as near as I can make out the initilas.  It was done through Nutmeg Sports.

These came in this afternoon while I was giving the last 10 minutes of a massage.
When I came out of the massage room, your CasCity guru.. Marshal Halloway..  was standing in the kitchen.. with his shorts on, white socks.. no shoes.. and his holsters and new guns strapped on... whistling the theme song of Clint Eastwoods, "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly ( believe me ... he was all 3)  ::)    :D :D :D

I'm surprised that the guns have any ivory left on the grips. :-\
He has handled them and twirled them and played Cowboys and Indians here all evening..

***sighhhhhhhhhhhh***.... Is it ever going to be MY TURN to be the Cowboy and get to fast draw and play with the guns??
And why do you ALWAYS get to be Marshal Dillon and I ALWAYS have to be Miss Kitty. >:(

It has occured to me that your name is not on the USFA CSS list. Shall I add yours and Marshal'ette's (I know she's gonna be shootin' 'em and wanting a set of her own) to the list?

The leftward drift if this group isn't the fault of USFA. It is sighted dead on at 25 yards. I have
a tendency to push the trigger when Ive been away from SAAs a week or so. The load is
7.5 Unique and the generic cast rnfp sold by most commercial casters.  Velocity is Mid 800s.

Beautiful pictures, Mec!  That first shot looks like it should belong on the USFA web site.  What kind of camera are you using?
Title: Re: The Pictures Pages
Post by: mec on September 25, 2007, 12:53:30 PM
Well, It kind of is.  Not too long after they started making all the parts domestically, I ordered this revolver and wrote it up for gunblast.com.  USFA links to that article on their Pre-War window.

I had been shooting first and second gen colts a friend owns and the occasional Uberti and finally decided I needed a really good one for myself.  The choice was either a second generation colt or a USFA. The only thing Ive done to it is to replace the trigger bolt spring with a trapper wire. this reduced the pull to a few ounces under two pounds and this, along with finallly figuring out proper trigger finger placement, helps me overcome my left/low shooting tendencies. At first, I didn' much appreciate the wider front sight on the USFA (wider than late first and second generation colts but it works well for me.  I have no complaints about this revolver except that the shiney color case treatment sometimes flairs the sight picture for me in bright sunlight.  I can live with that.

Post by: Capt. John Fitzgerald on September 25, 2007, 07:22:44 PM
Mike,
NOW I remember!  that was a good article you wrote.
Changing out the springs is all I have ever done to any of my USFA's.  I use the Wolff reduced power main spring and the Heinie wire trigger/bolt spring.

Hello all, new member here.

Here's my new USFA.  I've wanted one of these for years and was finally able to pick one up a couple of weeks ago.  I've always been a Colt fan, but I have to say these are the finest single actions of the Colt style currently being made.  Smooth action, excellent trigger, perfect fit and finish as well as dead-on accuracy.  What more can you ask for?

Here with my thirty-year old Colt and my Uberti '73.

VG, the Colt is an early third generation made in 1977.  I got lucky with that one, it shoots directly to point of aim and is very accurate.

Well, thank ya Mr. Cogburn. This will probably answer your question in the new member thread too - I'm very new to all this and found USFA through a search for single actions, because I always wanted one. Followed the link to SASS and CAS-City and was totally hooked by what I saw.  Figured USFA was making the best and set my sights on them and luckily found the three in the picture at a local dealer.

I like the Lightning a lot so far, but don't have much to compare it with. It seems to have a smooth action, and my groupings were pretty tight for a newbie. I love its low profile and how quick I can get off shots due to the pump action. But I've only had these for about a month.

Cheers,
Scott Yancey

United States Patent Fire Arms - .357 magnum

This is the gun (not the exact gun) that got them sued by Colt for the use of "Patent" in their name, hence United States Fire Arms. I think that is when they dropped the .357 Magnum chambering also.

I have my father's "Civilian" pre-WW-II 1911 Colt in .45 ACP.

There's some features of the original 1911s that I really like.

For my hand the long Trigger and Straight Housing I really like.

The wide, checkered Hammer is nice.

However the original pattern sights leave a LOT to be desired.

Here are some images of my new USFA O.W. Ainsworth, it was ordered on on the 17th of March, and received on the 5th of May.  It is my first U.S. Firearms revolver.  I was interested in owning the earliest version of Colt's New Model Army Metallic Cartridge Revolving Pistol, and this is as close as you can buy in 2010, Colt offers nothing like this.  I apologize for the low quality of the images, I was shooting wide open in low light with no tripod, so the depth-of-field was very shallow.  Anything behind the focus point will be soft.

Frank,
Been following your saga here, on the USFA forum board, and at DJ's.  You stated that USFA has no record of you gun, yet it is featured on their own web site.  On the USFA web site go to the "Products" Menu, then select "Custom Shop," then select "Fit & Feel."  Scroll down to the part where they show the gold inlay.  The ivory grips in the picture easily identify the gun as being the one you now own.

Mustang, I have two Single Actions with 7 1/2" barrels,,on in .45colt and one in .44sp/44-40 dual cylinder deal. Both shoot teenie tiny groups at 15 yards,,about an inch high. Just the way I'd have designed them to do were I building them myself. A six oclock hold on anything at that distance and I'm dead center.

I believe beyond  a doubt, that the USFA guns are the best quality in a firearm. Well, of the one's iv owned anyways.

I own one USFA.
It started out as a Rodeo. A buddy of mine had it, I had been wanting to try one out and he needed cash.

Unfortunately, he lived in Las Vegas, where they have gun registration and needed to have it "taken out of his name". I live in Sparks where there is no such requirement, so I went with him to the sheriff's office and did the transfer.

Sheriff wrote the Make and model as "Colt" and "SAA" instead of "USFA" and "Rodeo".
So according to Clark County, I own a Colt SAA with a 4 digit SN!
I loved everything about the gun, except the horrid finish. I tried to buff it to give it that patina look, but in reality it made a new gun look 100+ years old (I have a Colt SAA made in 1903 that looks like it just rolled off the production line yesterday).

So I looked into options and found the best deal from Gary Reeder. He casehardened the frame, black chromed the other parts, some light engraving and it started looking like a real revolver!

Joe Perkins of Outlaw Grips made a one-piece set of stocks exactly like what Russell Crowe used in 3:10 to Yuma.

It was long...maybe 6 months. CCH was new to them at the time and they were waiting on chemicals, etc for most of that. He charged me for everything about the same as what Turnbull quoted me for POLISHING!

Nicer case colors than on my 3rd gen SAA, fireblued the screws and engraved a cross where the Rampany Colt would be on an SAA.

Here are my three USFA's. Very top is my Turnbull USFA in 45 Colt, the one just under the 73 is my 45 Colt USFA, and the bottom with the factory black US grips is my 45Colt/45ACP USFA. This photo was taken about a year or so ago and I have since replaced the hard rubber factory grips on my 45Colt/45ACP gun with custom stag grips, moved the custom stag grips from the USFA 45 Colt to the Turnbull USFA, as the ones on it did not fit exactly right, and put a one piece Faux Ivory on the USFA 45 Colt. Now that is probably all as clear as mud.

Capt. John, The custom grips on the USFA are made by William Jennings. I thought he had a website but I have not been able to find it. My most recent set that I acquired for one of my USFA's are by Sack Peterson and he does have a website. Here is a picture of my current stable of USFA's. The one just above the Sheriff's model has the Sack Peterson grips and the one on top is my Trunbull with the W. Jennings grips. The fauk Ivory grips I did myself from a kit I purchased and the ones on the Sheriff model are factory stag. That is the gun I just recently purchased. I have acquired these over several years and from the rumors that are going around about USFA's future I plan on keeping them for a long time to come.

Well, it does look better than it did when I sent it back to them over 10 years ago!  Still, I wanted "Master B" engraving and that sure looks like "Armory A" coverage to me.  Ah, well…  when the dust settled 10 years ago USFA did the right thing and gave me what I wanted, an ivory handled, nickel plated gun with a properly polished frame.

Pangaea,
Has Yahoody filled you in on the history of this gun?

Yahoody,
Did Adams & Adams do the "armory" engraving?  I thought they only did the "master" level of engraving.

I can't answer to that in full Cap'.  Although I have had A&A do a number of projects for me.  All were signed.   My impression is A&A did all the DT guns.  And none that I have seen are at a master level IMO. ( the guns that are cylinder only or just slightly more coverage than the cylinder)  Seems to be production engraving to me.  Also seems to be what USFA called "armory engraving"...no signature and not very deep.  Like anything,  you generally get what you pay for I expect.  A master level engraver can put out a lot of standard level engraving....in a short amount of time compared to one master level gun with true "C" coverage.

Here is how Colt does it and the cost:
◾Standard: basic American style, engraver not recorded. C level  $1800
◾Expert: master quality scroll work, engraver signed and recorded. C level  $3260
◾Master: intricate scrollwork with precious metal inlays, signed by the engraver and recorded.  C level master is $7000

Much as I like my USFA guns..and I do.  Sure was a lot of smoke and mirrors going on there IMO from the very beginning when they were simply refinishing. repackaging and then reselling Uberti guns, right up till the lights went out on 100% USA built guns and the last  "historical letters"  were being signed long after the CNC machines were sold off and the doors were locked.

Pangaea,
Has Yahoody filled you in on the history of this gun?

Capt., yes he did give me a pretty good rundown on the history behind it.  Seems like a nice weapon to me, I'm going to have to learn all the differences in these engraved pistols.  I'm just not educated enough on the subject to know which are "Amoury" and "Master".  I must say, I do like them all.

Here is what I have learned about engraving.  It was/is an expensive lesson.  It is worth what I paid for it and what you are now :)

Engraving is history carved in metal.  Once done not easy to go back in time.  Like it for what it is.  Simple as that.  I have nice engraved guns that now I wish could have been done differently.

They are what they are.  Learning to enjoying the differences in the artisan's skills and styles is what makes them fun for me.
No question it is a learning experience.

But they are just guns.  Expensive guns at that!   To be a "nice" engraved gun for me they have to be so beautiful/stunning as art that I won't shoot them....art in metal.  Or such a good gun it deserves to be engraved and used.  Used a lot!  I have a few of both.  I like the users more.  And dislike their engraving by comparison.  Go figure  ::)  Never said any of this made sense.

Here is a USFA Lightning, next to an original Colt. The quality is outstanding and it functions quite well even though it is a 45 and the original is a 44-40...

That Colt is in very nice condition. Is it in original condition?  If so, somebody took very good care of it.  A couple of very nice rifles. I have several of the USFAs.  I find them to be a lot of fun, even with their quirkiness.

I never owned a single action revolver but could not help myself when this came up in an auction.  USFA did the engraving.
