44 Mav Dutchman with smokeless
« on: May 15, 2023, 01:00:50 AM »
I was wondering if anybody has used the Big Lube Mav Dutchman 44-40 200 grain bullet with smokeless powder?

I have used it with black powder with great results and I want to try it with smokeless. As far as I know there are no manuals that include the Mav Dutchman but it is similar in weight and size to the Lyman 427666 200 grain bullet which does have published loads.

 :) Hey O'l Lonely One  ;)

I have not used the Mav Dutchman 200 in 44-40.  I eon't even own a 44-40.  I have however, loaded a pile of them in both 44 Special and 44 Russian cases.  My results were pretty stellar.  Grouped really well out to 100 yards.  You do wind up with more lube than you really need with smokeless but what the hey, a little extra lube never hurt anything.

Now I shoot with APP.  Don't need lube.  But the Dutchman shoots just fine Nude with APP.  Load data used was same same as load data for other cast 200Gr bullets, although I mostly shot reduced charges for CAS.

I shoot this bullet in my 1860 Henry. It works extremely well with about 3-3-1/2 grains of Red Dot.

That sounds incredibly light.  Alliant lists a cowboy action load with Red-Dot range of 5.31 to 5.9gr for a 200 gr bullet.  I know people go below published specs for CAS all the time, but I'm curious if you have chrono'd that load?  I don't shoot smokeless much in my 44-40 but when I did I used Trailboss.  I don't have a whole lot of that left but have plenty of Red-Dot!   :)
