Title: 1880s Dark brown "Duck" leggings
Post by: Drydock on May 09, 2010, 07:29:12 PM
One of the few things I can never find.  Finaly took 2 capfuls of dark brown RIT dye and threw it in the washing machine with a set of Coon Creek light Kahki leggings.  Came out perfect!

Sir,
Did you use powder or liquid RIT dye?  I need to dye some canvas (cot cover and canvas chair cover) and I think I'm going to try RIT.

Liquid.  Follow the directions on the bottle, don't need a whole lot.

I'm thinking the local laundromat (kind of a dive) will be a better option!

Ah, the joys of bachelorhood!  And yes, following the directions on the bottle I immediatly ran the washer on high with a cup of bleach in it.  Cleaned right out.

I'm married, and I can just see something going really bad using our washing machine.  No thanks!  Go laundromat!

According to directions, you can just use a bucket, hot water, and manual (Broomhandle) agitation for 15 or 20 minutes.  Then throw it in the washer with a cool water setting to set the color.  Ah, just get the bottle, Wal Mart or most any fabric store will have it, and read the directions.

Since we're on the subject of leggins......I was poking around the internet yesterday, and saw that IMA, the guys that have all the Martini's and Snyder-enfields from Nepal, Have got white MP leggins, I suppose they are actual US surplus items. No mention of sizes in the ad, but at I think 17.95 or so, if they fit you could dye them the color you want.( and have heavy canvas and non-flimsey grommets)
