Next Helpful Hint (Learnt the hard way)
« on: September 29, 2023, 12:28:53 PM »
Hi

You know how putting masking tape on the back of a holster or belt to keep it from stretching when you stamp it works?  Using packing tape leaves a gummy mess.  Alcohol seems to work (not drinking it, wiping the gummy mess off Jeez).

If you think this goes in the FAQ's feel free.  I was out of masking tape and the blue kind doesn't stick that well.

That's a good tip. I've often wondered how the blue stuff would work but haven't had the occasion to try it. I have successfully removed adhesives with lighter fluid with good success, too.

While I'm not a leather worker close to those who post on here, I have had some  experience with around-the-house solvents. ::) ::)  I might suggest a product called "Goof Off".  I have found it removes many adhesives and hasn't damaged anything I've used it on.  I've made many OOPS that it has helped me recover from.  I just don't know if I've ever tried it on leather, so proceed with caution.

I use blue tape and have not had any gumming problems. The most problem I will have is when pulling the tape off the back it will sometimes make the leather puff out (lack of better term) or fuzz. Its easily burnished back down to a hard smooth surface though.

I use 3m brown package/shipping tape. I used to use blue painters tape. I learned that blue painters tape(and masking tape) will still let the leather stretch more than i want it to. The blue painters tape is designed to be stretched to adapt to what you are protecting from paint.

the 3m brown package tape dose not have stretch built into the tape. also it leaves very little residue on leather when pulled off.

I saw a few people say that when removing the tape fold it back and pull it off almost parallel to the belt.

yep this helps keep from stretching the belt different ways. also pull the tape off when leather is completely dry.

I suppose low-tack tape is a possibility.
