Just picked up a USFA SAA, background info?
« on: March 16, 2021, 02:20:09 PM »
Hey guys, I just picked up a USFA .45LC for an awesome deal.  Has some light rust spots on the barrel that'll need some TLC but otherwise in great condition.  I was wondering if anyone has experience with these, I've done some research online into this company and looked at their last available catalog (2007).  Due to the Old Armory Bone Case finish and the presence of the cylinder cross-pin, It appears to be their "The Single Action" model, with ivory or horn grips, I can't tell.  I'm curious if the low serial number might add some collectibility as well.  No plans to sell though, this is my first SAA.  It's been fired but clean.  Any input on this revolver would be appreciated!  Thanks, looking forward to contributing to this community!

I suggest you post or move this to the USFA board... the experts abound there

They can tell you if its a Uberti based USFA , part US part Uberti or the holy grail US made.

What Major 2 said.  Also, that serial number indicates a gun that was sold in the white to Doug Turnbull who finished it and sold it.

I believe Abilene correct ...

I didn't really pay attention to the SS# ...the sages will know  , but being a Turnbull gun it may mean the gun is later manufacture  towards the end when USFA was on the ropes.

 :)  Hi raids323   ;)

Just a sticking point.  "SAA" is usually reserved for Colt Single Action guns as it stands for Colt's "Single Action Army."  A USFA, while certainly a Single Action, USFA are usually not referred to as SAA.  Just Colt.

Also, as per my usual bugaboo, There is no such thing as .45LC which is shorthand for 45 Long Colt.  Never was a 45 "Long Colt" cartridge.  It has always been, just 45 Colt.

Now, I do admit to being a bit anal in this regard, and often a seat ass, but that just me.  I mean no harm.  In fact, it does appear you have one really swell USFA which will be gobs of fun to play with.  A really nice find.  Pay no attention to me being a Snot.  No offense intended.

Thanx Coffinmaker, for carrying on the effort to keep the proper .45 Colt moniker in play. You are also right that that is a swell sixgun.

And actually being a later gun is more desirable in the case of USFA, making it more likely to be an all-USA parts gun.  An "early" s/n would not add value but rather detract from it due to it having Italian parts.  There may be exceptions, but this is  a generality.

First congratulations for joining the USFA family. They can become addictive (seem my avatar). It is a crying shame about the rust but if you're careful and do it right you may be able to clean it up. Don't be shy about asking for help on what to do. There are a number of gun-cranks on here who can help. Best of luck with that part.

And, I second the comments from the guy who makes wood boxes shaped like people. (smiley face goes here)

These revolvers were actually marketed by Turnbull Restorations with their own run of serial numbers. Thjey were called the "Turnbull Cowboy Classic".   They are entirely American made and sent to Turnbull "in the white" for the full Turnbull case colors and bluing treatment.  I got mine in 2004 (I believe) when they were first announced direct from Turnbull for under $1000.  It is a 45 with 10" barrel.  I'd love to post pics but I have no idea how...
