The Longbranch / Re: "Barking Squirrels"

When my Uncle first told me about it, I thought he might have been partaking too much if then "shine". He explained to me, the correct way to "bark" a squirrel, was to shoot the bark of the tree direct in front of it. Like I said, I thought my Uncle was out of it, until I tried it once when i was hunting alone. I did exactly as he had taught me, and sure enough, the sucker fell out of the tree. I when over to where it fell, it looked like it was dead, and after much poking with the barrel of my Marlin 60 to make sure, it sure enough was dead as a doornail. When my Aunt and I cleaned it out, there was not a mark on it.

The Barracks / Re: 50-70 dies

NO!  :o  Those will not work.  I know at least one, most likely both, are set up for .500 bullets.  You need .515s at least to work well in your RB.  You would be better off getting a Lee universal flare die, then simply thumb seating your bullets, No dies at all.  I have seen some nice groups done that way.  Won't take rough handling, but you can shoot until the dies show up.  Do you have a bullet mold yet?

Thanks, Drydock.  I put in an order with Optics Planet for some Redding Dies.  They say 16 to 25 days, but I expecting this is a bait and switch...hence I'm looking for some that are real and have a tracking number put on them immediately.

I may do a deal with one of the Blues Brothers (Joe and Robert) to where I can go visit them and do some reloading.
I did get brass on order from Starline.  It should be here tomorrow.

I'm trying to figure out if any of the modern 50 cal. dies would work.  I'll do some research and see if the dimensions would allow to use something like 50 AE or 500 S&W dies in a make-shift fashion...I don't need a full length resizer...since I have the one rifle, I would just resize the case mouth, expand it, and something to put a light crimp on the bullet.

Got some new MVA sight inserts, lot finer cross hairs and open centers.  And a 30 minute higher rear mount block for the scope.  Out to the farm again.  On at 100 now puts the scope at the bottom of the adjustment range, got a full 90 minutes above that now.  Should get me past 500.  Might be close to 600,  Won't know until I get on a good range to find out.  Should  be good for a Medium Range Match.  Could not do much with the Vernier sights, wrong time of day, washed out the targets back in the brush.

Shot several groups under 2" at 100 yards, this rifle REALLY likes that 630 grainer.  Did some cross stick shooting, picked up a little bamboo shower stool just the right height for my cross sticks.  Lets me get a good elbows on knees rest. Groups open up to 3" or so, still figuring out best breathing and stability off the sticks.  But a fun afternoon.

That was my inspiration for this collection of shootin irons and antler pommel sheath knife.

When I was but a lad, some Lustrum ago, Barking a Squirrel was hitting the branch immediately under the Squirrel, knocking it out of the tree and stunning it at the same time.  More to eat that way.

Looks like an old cut down someone made a pretty good carbine out of.  Not a bad price really.
