Okay, do I sell em?
« on: March 29, 2023, 10:41:14 AM »
Well, this is a problem. I have a pair of nice Uberti Schofields in 45 Colt and love them. I had to send one in for factory work and while it was gone ran my Opentops with Army grips. I shoot the Opentops better! So I know that while I love the Schofields, I will continue to run the Opentops when competing. I will need to pick up another OT as a backup. But since I won't be shooting the Schofields, I know one guy who desperately wants the 3 1/2" and would buy it in a heartbeat. Should I sell the Schofields? It would also let me pick up a Colt Lightning repro if I did.

well, that's a quandary....

I also like my Colts, in my case Richard's conversions.
Though I don't have a Schofield, I do have a New Model #3,
I wanted one, finally got in 2013 or so and would not part with it.

I think in your situation, I might let the 3 1/2" go, and find the OT backup you seek.
I'd hang on the other one, just cause I might would kick myself later it I did.
As to the Lighting, the replicas as a general rule are problematic in competition.
I believe, I'd be remorseful having purchased a troublous Lightning repro.

However, seem to recall the Pedersoli was the least problematic.
The Taurus and USFA being the more troublesome of the manufacturers.

I concur, you’re going to need a bigger boat….er safe. I only have one ASM Schofield and while its a ball to play with i hate the touch trigger hammer lock thing. I doubt that I’d buy another.

Howdy Deacon,

I have a pair of 5" Schofields that I enjoy shooting almost as much as my USFA's. Plus another 8" Schofield. All .45 Colt, like my main match rifles. I'd hang on to them unless you promise (yourself) to use the proceeds to buy another gun you really want.

On the other hand, if one wants to sell a gun for top dollar, now may be the time.

Advise worth every penny you paid for it.

:) Ah Ha and Hey Deacon  ;)

Twer it me, I'd dump the Schofields (I actually did), using the proceeds to acquire another "Open Top."  Schofields (Repros) don't play well with BP nor Subs so become non-players for me.  Plus I'm a Conversion Addict so the open top guns are a NO BRAINER for me.

Now, about that Lightning.  Are you really a glutton for punishment??  A closet Masochist??  Do you normally walk around with a sign on yer back says "Kick Me??"  There are really good reasons the Lightning has pretty much disappeared.  The only repo of the Lightning that "usually" runs is a Pedersoli.  The rest are a nightmare in daylight and cost more to get running than the original purchase price.  In other words > > >  SKIP THE LIGHTNING.  Dam'd expensive Tomato Stake.  Ignore those few folks who say "I have one that runs."  Taint many of 'em.  PASS.  Yule have better results with a lottery ticket than finding a Lightning that runs.

Howdy,

Coffinmaker reminded me. I didn't focus on the "lightning" mention. I have no experience with these guns; however, if you are determined to get one for a main match rifle, I'd recommend that you grab an '87 for your shotgun. You clearly have a high threshold for frustration.

Just sayin,

Rev. Chase

Only sell if you would also sell your children to the Gypsies.  Only ever let one gun get away that I did not regret.  Now I treat as children once adopted cannot dispose of.

I've encountered children that should have been sold to gypsies.  ::)

There are a couple of guns I kinda wish I had not sold or traded, but on the whole Skeem of it I've managed.

This was an older thread, what did you decide to do Kevin?

Decided I would keep the Schofields. I do love em! Got the 3 1/2" back and man it shoots like a house afire. And decided if I really need frustration, I can find a less expensive alternative to getting a Lightning.

Those of us (probably 95% of all here) have been there and can relate. :)

We are brothers, all in a hopeless gun-o-holic spiral.
It is sort of like the FORCE, it has the dark want or crave & desire side.
And then Jedi peacefully acquired, current stewardship side

Sometimes, discretion cancels desire... sometimes it's for the better   ;D

 :) Deacon  ;)

There is no such thing as a "Bad Reason" to acquire another gun.  Just squirrel away half you lunch money and PRESTO!! you will soon afford another brandy knew Open Top.

Skipping the Lightning is a really FINE idea.
