Title: JOIN STORM HERE!
Post by: Pappy Hayes on October 06, 2005, 02:49:48 PM
Just received and email from the Marshal about this forum the other day. Good to see so many others shouting the Open Tops and Conversions. I have not seen any others in my area shooting them. I shoot an Open top and a RM 1860 Army in 44Colt with my 66 Yellowboy in 44-40. I not in the sport for the speed, I am in for the fun of shooting and trying to be period correct. I just purchased the RM Army from Marshal a couple of weeks ago and shot it for the first time this past Sunday in a monthly shoot. I shoots real sweet. Shot my 66 for the first time also. Not sure if it was the new guns, but I shot with a lot less misses then previous shoots. I was borrowing a rifle and my second gun was an Uberti Cattleman in 45 with 51/2 barrel. I was missing more with the 45 then my Open top so I would say this was some of the difference. I was hoping that R&D would have come out with the conversion kit to make a Richards 1860 Army conversion, but it was going to take longer than expected so I went with the RM 60 Army. Someday, hopefully maybe Uberti/Beretta will come out with a good quality Richards. Looking forward in being able to come to this forum to read interesting things about these type of gun. Thanks to those you put this together.

Forgot to mention, I have a magazine with an article about Gren's conversions. Probably what got me interested in these type of guns.

Well, I'm not usually a joiner, but this seems like company I'd like to keep. I shoot a brace of Open Tops and have a passion for conversions. I'd eventually like to add conversions of 1861 Navies, an 1862 Police or two and a '49 conversion as a pocket piece. There's something about conversions -- and I know the Open Top isn't really a conversion, but it looks like one -- that really turns me on. I have vague plans to convert some odd-ball guns, as well. How about a conversion on a Starr single action? Or a Rogers-Spencer? Gunsmiths back then probably converted just about anything to fire cartridges, so why not add some of the less common ones? All it will take is time and money and access to a decent machine shop.

Just bought my first open top a month ago. It's the 1872 open top in 45 schofield. Dang is that thing accurate. I've owned open top cap and balls before. 1860 colt, 1847 walker and a small sherrif's model. Sold those off and wish I hadn't now. Sign me up.

Howdy,

I'm in Spencer Shooting Society, I guess I need to join STORM since I shoot a pair of Charcoal Blue Cimarron 1860 Richards-Masons in .44 Colt. One is 8" and one is 5 1/2", both with Army grips.  They go well with my Henry and Spencer.

I would like to join, I started CAShooting with a pair of 72 Open Tops in 44 Colt (that I couldn't afford), and have since started shooting C&B 51's with the Crow River Rangers in Minnesota. I had to give up the OT's to my son, who shoots Frontier Cartridge. We still share the rifle , a 66  short rifle in 44 spl.  I have since opened the OT'S to 44 spl (anybody need to borrow, or buy a reamer?) so that the handgun, and rifle ammo could be the same, without trimming brass.
I have recently bought a Kirst kit to turn my 49 pocket, (baby doll), into a 32 S&W cartridge gun, and I think that a conversion , or 2 will be soon to follow.
My only claim to fame is that I once made Coyote Cap come right off his chair at the livery stable when I snuck my 3rd model Dragoon to a stage that had one of those "dump 5 as fast as you can at the BIG target" things.

Is there a special badge that a STORM member could buy?

Thanks
HANCOCK

Please enroll me in the ranks of STORM.
I have a brace of (imitation) ivoryhandled 1872 Open Tops in .45 S&W to go with my matching caliber Spencer carbine.
I also generally shoot a couple of 1860's in Frontiersman.  I use an Iron Frame .44-40 Henry as a stand-in for the Spencer sometimes.
Have been using a Baikal hammergun untill now, but it's waay to modern so I plan to switch to a Husqvarna
with a Lefaucheux-mechanism (underlever), just to complicate things!

I'm fortune enough to have just received my Cimarron 8" 1860 Army RM Conversion in .38LC/.38 Sp. It is a beautiful revolver & shoots as good as it looks. The action is smooth with a crisp 3lb. trigger....not a hint of creep. It is exceptionally accurate & a joy to shoot. El Paso Saddlery supplied me with a "1849 Californian" holster with full floral carving that is of equal quality and beauty. Am I a happy puncher? Oh yes! Please add my name to the STORM roster. We'll all enjoy these conversion and open top revolvers immensely.

My brother bought a '51 R-M conversion in .38 special and made the mistake of leaving it with me to shoot. I did. It's mine and he can't have it back ;D.

I was shooting a Cimarron Lightning in .38 and love the gun, but I wanted a "less belly" gun. He spotted this one an bought it for me. He also dropped off an IAC 87 which my oldest (Waddie Bearp, SASS #70630)  immediately claimed. Waddie also shoots the R-M and the Lightning. Since the whole family (four of us) shoot, we have to share a lot.

We'd both sure like to be STORM members.

I picked up the OT's today and I must admit I was a bit surprised by their size.  I didn't realize they were on the Navy frame, so they are "cute" but handle very nicely and even nicer was the fact that Cimmarron sent consecutively numbered guns.  Now to try them out. :o

Ok, cleaned my new Navy Open Tops and had to dirty them up.  I now know what they meant when they said, "The buck and roar of a 44."  One should not shoot BP at twilight.  Right out of the box these seem pretty good.  Cocking effort and trigger pull is a little stronger than my C&B Navy, but they're new.

Can I now join STORM?

Pards,

I'd like to join STORM too.  I have shot 60's for well over 30+ years starting with one I purchased for DGWs, a Uberti.  I have continued to shoot 51's and and Pocket Navies for sides.  Just recently won my cat. at the Blue Ridge Roundup in Frontiersman with a nice pair of 60's that are the fully fluted models.  These pitols have never failed me, I shoot Ubertis and Piettas both and love to make the smoke.  It's got to where I have more Open Topens than I do single actions.

Please sign me up,

I have consecutive Cimarron Navy frame Open Tops in 44 Colt.  Love shooting them!  Their innaugural CAS debut will be in two weeks.  Been workin' on the 44 Colt in 44 Special rifle problem like a lot of you.
My 44 Special 92 doesn't like to feed 44 Colt as the smallish rims jam in the slots in the rails sometimes.  Okee dokee, most of the time and I know I need a '66 or Henry.  To fix the "problem" I  simply trim 44 Special cases to 1.09" - 1.1" 44 Colt length.  Load using 44 Colt data of course, and seat the bullet to 44 Special length.  I tailor the load to the OTs, the rifle has a rear site to adjust.  Just don't forget these are 44 Colt length cases appropriate for 44 Colt, not Special loads.  I keep 'em mild.
One other caveate, 1860 conversions with rebated cylinder/frame probably won't accept 44 Special rims.  That's what Cimmaron told me;  That's why the "new" 44 Colt has the small diameter rim.  44 Special/44 Mag cases wouldn't fit in the rebated cylinder without skipping chambers.  One I tried sure wouldn't.  They also told me that the 45 Colt OTs didn't pass proof.  Not that I wanted a 45 Colt.
I'd like to ask questions so want to join STORM.  Or do I need to shoot my OTs at a match first?
Thanks
BB

downright fantastic looking and reasonably smooth otb.I
changed the orig order from 4- 3/4" 45lc to 7 -1/2"
44spl. cause the 45's were taking too long to get here. Damn

Please sign me up in STORM.  I've been a big fan of the open top Colts for a long time.  A lot longer than I care to think about.

Here is a list of the open tops I have.
1851 Navy in .36
3 1860 Armies  This is starting to get a little out of hand.
3rd Model Dragoon
Leech and Rigdon in .36  It may not be a Colt, but it sure is based on one.

One of these days I may get one of those new fangled cartridge conversions, but until then I'll stick with my trusty cap and ball revolvers. ;D

I have a Cimmaron 1860 Army Colt R-M conversion in .44 Colt. I also have a Pietta 1851 Navy Colt with a Kirst cylinder in .38LC with the "K" ring, and I fearfully anticipate putting a Dremel sanding drum to the Colt's recoil shield.  :(  I figure, though, you guys can cheerlead me through it. And I have a '49 Pocket with a drop-in conversion cylinder, but I want to get the gated cylinder for it. And chew up the frame on that, too  :-\

And if that isn't enough, I've brought cookies...  ;)

Please include me, I shoot a couple of pairs of '60 Armys, a pair of '61s or '51s in Frontiersman. I also have a Uberti as well as an ASM Walker and a Uberti 3rd model Dragoon. I sometimes shoot Open Tops in either .44 Spl (.44 Russian) or .38 Spl in Frontier Cartridge.  I also have 3 original Colt pistols, a family heirloom which is a martially issued 1860 Army built in 1861, and a second built in 1862 as well as a '49 made in 1853.  I also have a weird Armi San Marco "Richards Conversion" which was supposed to be a '61 conversion.  I also have Richards Transitions on order and as soon as they are available in either .44 Spl or .44 Colt I'm getting a pair.

O.K. I think my timing may be just right!!

I tried a pards open tops, and decided I needed a pair, but not just any pair.

I shoot B-Western.

So I have on order from Taylors two 1872 Navies 7 1/2" in NICKEL!!

Gonna shoot them with BP in B-Western. I think I may the first to do so....

Taylors said they think I will be the first with a consecutive pair in NICKEL....

So can I be #247?

I am in Law enforcement and my station # is 47...

And a not as hefty Navy also in 44 spicial, 5 1/2" barrle tucked in on the right hip. I have found both shooting irons accurate and reliable. I'd like to join up, too.  I shoot a brace of 8-inch Navy-gripped 1860 R-M's in .44 Colt, and my backups are a brace of 7.5-inch 1851 R-M's in .38 Spl.

Ok, I suppose I'll throw my hat into the ring.  I've been  shooting Richard's and Richard-Mason's conversion 1860 Army in .44 Colt, 4.5" barrels.  Been shooting them for more than a year now.  I love them because they shoot where you point.

Join me up Mr. Moderator. I just got me a new Taylors/Uberti 1872 Open Top in .38 spl w/7-1/2" bbl that I am planning on using at the next match I go to.

I also have an old Pietta brass fram "Engraved" '51 Colt Navy that I used back in the old days, reenacting (early 90's, I was a member of the color guard). I always shot blanks out of it, but I have never shot live rounds.

Now I have an open top I feel comfortable shooting live rounds. Thanks to Mr. Rezac in Nebraska for being a great dealer!

Count me in!  I traded my 1860 Army Pietta in for a Traditions 1851 Navy Conversion in .38 Spl about a year ago.  I love shooting this gun and hope to someday trade off my Taurus Gaucho .38/357 for another .38 conversion.

Let me know if I am in and what number I am.

STORM seems to just fit my pistol.  I have been shooting various Colts over the years, but few of them in SASS.  A brace of Walkers, a couple of 1860's, an 1851, and a Baby Dragoon are current favorites.  I am pretty sure a 1849 pocket is under the tree!

I am trying to decide on a pair of factory conversions, a purchase of some Kirst or R&D conversions, or building a set of home grown.

One day I shoot a match in the Josie Wales catagory...2 Walkers, an 1860, a conversion and a converted 1849.  Heck with the rifle!   ;)

I have faxed them my local shop’s FFL and eagerly await their arrival amidst the shipping availability of this holiday season.

Thanks for the membership!
The M.W.N.N. conversion is well built. Have not had a chance to get to the range with it yet. I'm not too crazy about the new rear sight dovetailed into the barrel (seems to spoil the lines of the revolver), but I can live with that.

Did'nt know there were others like me out there !!
I have owned an open top with army grips and 7 1/2 inch barrel, a 60 conversion with 8 inch barrel (both in 44 colt), and a 51 navy with 5 1/2 inch barrel.
Of those three, i came to love the navy grip and the 5 1/2 inch barrel.
Started shooting Classic Cowboy (thought the big calibers would make it a less "gamey"   ;D class).
When they came out with the 45 colt in the 72 open top i had to have a couple.
Been shooting them for about 20 months now and love them.
I know the 45 colt is not "original" but i like the 66 and all of them were in 44 rim fire just like the open tops.
I my mind the 200 gr 45 bullet is as close to the 44 rim fire heeled bullet as possible.
Found a example of a 5 1/2 open top thought to be factory in one of my books so i believe i'm shootin' close to "the real thing" ;).
Love these guns, pretty and easy to point, as well as the best balanced.
I am definatly a member of this club :) !!!

Hi all:

Brand new to this forum. Shot NSSA for several years, but now it is too much travel and I am booked on Sundays as a Methodist preacher, so SASS fits better. Just getting started. Have Pietta 1860 Army, Uberti 1858 NMA in SS .44 and in blue .36. Wish I could figure some way to shoot my musket or Smith Carbine. Anyways, I'll be sticking with C&B and conversions. Looking forward to any advice you might have.

Hello pards!  My first post here at CAScity and it's to ask to join STORM.

I shoot a Cimmaron repro of the Colt 1871/2 Open Top.

(I'm into this game for the fun and historical accuracy.  Since the Open Top was chambered for 44 Henry, just like the 1866 and the original S&W #3s those are what I shoot.  If'n I'd've been alive back then, I'd have had interchangeable ammo! - Still do, as I shoot 44 Russians in all three of these guns.)

Hi, I am already a 'Dirty Rat'. Does that stop me from being in STORM? I have recently rescued a Uberti '47 Walker Colt from an uncaring, nasty, devious dealer over here in Blighty, (this is about my sixth flirtation with open top's). If some of you more knowing aficionados could give me a hint or two on loads I would be forever grateful! (All I do at the moment ,is fill the chambers to just below the rim and cram in a .451 ball.) God, but thats fun to shoot!! Dosn't make me too popular as it's an indoor range, but what the hell, I am the chairman of the club!!

I hope everyone is doing well.

I was here long ago and thought I was a member of STORM but want to be sure, so if I'm not. I'd like to join...especially because I've been posting in your group and wish to respect your rules.

I've been an antique arms collector since a teen and am now 42 and have handled hundreds of them whether they were my own or from my locator services and truly love the history that these arms have been through. As those before, we are only care takers for future gens to respect, enjoy and learn from.

I must say that the conversions have my heart though...especially the Model 1860 and all of it's variations.

Blessings,

Howdy,

If you'll have me I'd like to join STORM. I'm a hobby gunsmith, engraver and wood carver. I'm here because I live to shoot my handguns on a regular basis and my favorite one to shoot is my 1860 Army (I kind of like my S&W Model 41 .22 target pistol as well).

I live in a rural area with not much chance to shoot in official CAS without a good bit of travel. I do shoot informal Cowboy Action with other locals and we often shoot here at my place. I'm lucky and live where going out to shoot is just stepping outside or at least opening the shop door a tad when it's -13 like tonight. Not sure if it helps but I grew up on a horse in the badlands out my back door. The same badlands that once hosted a battle between the Gros Ventre and the Sioux. I wasn't around that far back so I have to take it on the word of some Gros Ventre friends. Ok, enough name dropping.

On a serious note I'd like to hang out here because this is the best exchange there is for gunsmithin and customizing my beloved 1860 Army. So, ifin you'll have me.....

Request permission to join your august group.  I'm a Frontiersman/Pistoleer that shoot's only Colt style C&B revolvers.  Primary main match guns are a pair of 2nd Gen 1861 Navies; and have a dozen or so other Navies that get shot occasionally.  One goal for the coming year is to obtain a pair of those new fangled cartridge conversions.

Respectfully submitted for approval,

Hey Fingers,
I'm sure if you've been a good boy Rio will approve you as your Christmas present from STORM.

I didn't realize that your '61s were your main match guns,  That's what I used use and I must say they are still probably my all time favorites for looks. They rarely get used these days.  I have been shooting '60s for the last 3 years.  Do your '61s have the silver plated grip frames?

Have a great Christmas,

Yes, they have the silver plated grip frames.  Once the holidays are over, they're probably gonna get shipped off to get some American Holly grips put on them.

As of today, I am now the proud owner of a brace of 44 Colt C. Mason 1860 Army revolvers from Taylor's.  These  are my first conversions, and I'm liking them a lot.  Beautiful workmanship cosmetically speaking, but the actions feel rough as a cobb.  So now I have some work to do.  But that's part of the fun.

So please sign me up.  I have a few questions, but I'll ask elswhere, as I don't want to hijack this thread.

Think I need to join up here.  Currently own a '61 Navy, '62 Pocket police, co-owner of 2 '51s and a '60.
My newest project, with Kirst coming up with their new Walker conversions cylinders: The Pocket Walker,
cut the barrel back to about 5-5 1/2 inches, and as a new leather project:reinforce the pockets of my pants
to carry them all(Sorry, big fan of the TV Show Supernatural with their demon-killing Colt, a Patterson revolver in
.38 supposedly able to kill anything.  Thought a cut down walker or dragoon in .45 LC would get the job done better).

Started October 5 2005.....!!!!!Where the he double hockysticks was I??? Blind as a bat with blinders on to boot, I missed this topic. May I beg your pardon for missing you and further quest your permission to join your little discussion. I have two 1872 opentops. Both are Uberti's imported by Stoeger, in the .45 Colt chambering. The first one I bought was wearing a 4 3/4 inch barrel , It is my concealed carry gun. The second one has the 5 1/2 inch barrel . It is my Long Range shooter. Both guns buck and bellar with a caseload Black stuff or a healthy dose of Tite Group. Both seem to be every bit as accurate as any of the Vaqueros that I also use for CAS. I really do on occasion use the short barrel open top for concealed carry as I have been graced with my state government's "PERMISSION" (isn't it wonderful of them) to carry a gun hidden. For carry I exchange the 250 grain lead round nose flat points for hornady XTPs and consider myself well armed.   Oh and by the way, did I mention that Opentops are the coolest guns on the fireing line,IMHO! ::)

72 Cimmaron in 45 Sch. paired with a R&D Cyl. on one of my 2nd Gen. Colt in 45 Sch/45LC.
Fits in nicely with my Henry & 78 Colt 12 Gauge.
And on occasion my Original 56-52 Spencer with an S&S CF Breach Block.

Best update this  ;) Still have the above 2Gens. and one still sports the R&D ,The other and my 2nd Gen Navy are still C&B.
but I added a pair of Type 1's  & a 51 R&M, I traded the OT for.

Jin me up!  I got a great deal on pistolas and brass so I am shootin a pair of 1872's in .44 Colt.  You can stuff about 24 gr of FFg in them with a 200 gr Big Lube boolit that makes a satisfying clang on steel.  What a great pointing pistol and a hoot to shoot!

Hey is there room at the bar for sit? Need to get in out of the cold for awhile. Trying to concentrate about Saturday morning need to try and sneak up on that "Old Bearded Tom". Well i have a .36 Cal Navy Black Powder made in Italy. Under the barrel is stamp DGG in a Circle. I have found out that is was made by Armi San S.r.l. ; established in 1970, uses the last names of the original founders Grassi, Doninelli, and Gazzola as a symble, DGG, usaually contained within a circle. Beginning date of December 31, 1970, Armi San Paplo officially became Euroarms Italia S.r.l. The same logo is used on all Euroarms models. This number on the bottom of the barrel, is this the numbers i need to find out any history on this pistol such as when it was actually made, and the place of origin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Turn Key

My favorite six gun style. I have four, a Cimarron 1860 RM, a 1860 RICHARDS by Ken Howell of R&D,(both in 44 colt), and two Stoger/Uberti 1872 open tops in 38 spl. (all 8" & 71/2" Bbls). I also shoot a 1860 Henry and  1866 replicas, both in 44-40, so I think I best get on board over in the Henry forum also.  ;D

I shoot an 1860 Army with a Kirst conversion, a Cimarron 1872 Open Top in 38 long Colt and ..Ta Da.. my newly converted Uberti Walker.Used a Kirst gated conversion , removed the loading lever and added a modified ejector assembly from VTI.  Not really fast but great style points ;D ;D . All are stoked with BP cartridges, so lots of smoke and flame.

Currently shoot a '51 Colt Navy in 36, an 1860 Colt Army and 2nd Model Dragoon, both 44's, and a '72 Open Top in 44(shoot black out it in 44 Colt and smokeless in 44 Special). Love shootin  the "old timers", if more people who shoot firearms would give em a try, willing to bet that they'd be hooked, if they could endure the clean-up after the shootin.

Am planning my 2011 campaign with the Texican Rangers near Fredericksburg, Texas.  Will be shooting a pair of Type II Conversions and a Yellow Boy, both .44 Special.  Have a pair of 1872 Open Tops as my back-up revolvers.  Plan also to shoot a hammered SxS 26" barrel.  Not in the game for speed, although I try.  My focus is on shooting clean with guns I enjoy and having fun.  The guns I plan to shoot next year, especially the open-tops that bill.  Now I have to decide what category to shoot.

Howdy,

No longer a competitive shooter of any type but I enjoy carrying and using my Colt clones.  And my conversion clone, I have an ASM 1860 richards conversion in 44 Colt.  My C&B revolvers cover the gamut from the Baby Dragoon up to the Grandfather   Walker.  My favorites happen to be the 1860s.  Not sure if I qulaify for membership since I don't compete but would be happy to just stick around and enjoy the firetalk.

Interested in joining up here if possible. I shoot a pair of Open Top in .44 Colt. Was a Law Dog with over 25 years recently retiring and now trying to catch up things I never seemed to have time for.

Hey Medicine Bear Charley:
I'm a new member here (I think) but haven't received any reply since Feb. when I posted, but I'll welcome you, if it's ok for me to do that!   :D
I shoot a Colt SAA and just got a Richards Mason conversion Navy.  Been shooting a Colt 1951 cap and ball since around 1980 and love those "open tops!"
Maybe somebody will say "howdy" if enough of us "sign up."

If not? I guess I'll just have to save up and convert my matched pair of 51s.

I just traded for a used pair of Cimarron 71/72 Army Open Tops in .45 S&W.  The barrels look ok.

I know some controversy exists over the barrel throat strength of the Open Tops in any .45 cal.

I'm gonna give these a try.  I like .45 S&W and have lots of brass.

Any open top style Colt is/are my fav handguns. From the percussions up thur the '72's. That was the height of style on Colt revolvers in my opinion.

Well I acquired a sequentially numbered set of RM 1860 Armies in 44 special and love them.  I am currently loading 44 Russian BP and are getting used to them over my regular Vaquero 44's and Bisleys.

I just love the style and pointability.  If I can wring them out suffieciently for me, I'll bring them to Comin At'Cha.

I'd be a member if they'd take someone like me.  ;D

Great to find this group!

Have two 7 1/2"  early (Navy) ,38 OTs, and two 5 1/2" late (army) 45Colt for FC class (Have one 7 1/2 barrel, looking for another).

Also 2 5 1/2" Uberti 51 RM conversions in 38 - mostly smokeless classes.

Also have a couple pairs of Pietta 51s for Frontiersman.

I LOVE how these guns look and more importantly, point.  Been picking them up when I find a great deal - far prefer the Navy grip w/long barrels.

Sign Me UP, Please!

Thanks,

I shoot many of the common Colt and repo cap and balls, in all of the original caliburs, and have finally gotten a 1872 open top in .44 Colt cal. Hi, I am new to CAS (a few months now), but have loved lever guns and single action revolvers for most of my life. My wonderful girlfriend saved up and gave me an 1851 Navy R-M conversion today for my birthday. I love the revolver and have been pining over one for some time. Count me as a member of STORM!

I've always been partial to the looks and handling of open-top revolvers, and have both an original and reproduction of the London Model 1851 Navy .... but don't shoot 'em much.

Last year, for CAS shooting I picked up a repro Richards Mason conversion in .45 Colt, and had a blast shooting it.  Then, just last week I made a deal to buy an "as new, in the box" repro Open Top ..... also in .45 Colt.  Don't have the latter in hand yet, but it should be along in a week or two (coming from the other end of the country ....)

At any rate, since I'll now be set up to shoot two "open top" revolvers, I figure its time I joined STORM.  Please sign me up!

Don't know if I quallify, haven't shot any matches, still in the process of saving up to get a lever action and a sxs, BUT I do shoot two cap and balls, a Pietta 1860, and a Pietta 51 Confederate navy sheriff on just about a weekly basis. The rifle and shotgun may have to wait, because the next payday it looks like it's going to be a Pietta Griswold and Gunnison. Just have a jones for Cap and balls, I don't even like shooting any of my cartridge guns anymore.  ;D

Just got my first open top! 7.5" .44 colt navy grip, no more SAA's for me. I've been converted. Most fun I've had shooting in awhile. Shot about 50 rounds of 2f with a BigLube and about 30 rounds with 5 grains of Unique. Fun little guns for sure, I wish I had gotten one earlier!! Now to find it a partner...

I shot them in our autumn two-day shoot last weekend, and had a blast.  Need a bit more practice with them, but still managed to place first in my class (....which I admit was rather small, but at least I wasn't the only one in it!)

Rattlesnake, what load are you shooting in your .45?
Title: Re: JOIN STORM HERE!
Post by: RattlesnakeJack on October 13, 2012, 09:34:24 PM
My CAS load for years has been 6.0gr Win231 with a 250gr bullet.  Am thinking that is a bit spicy for these open-tops, and may drop the powder charge somewhat ....
Title: Re: JOIN STORM HERE!
Post by: Carr Creek Kid on October 14, 2012, 09:14:12 AM
I tried 5 grains of unique in my 44 colts, it was really light and fun to shoot. I don't have a chronograph, but I shot up around the junk pile on our farm and I know they can go through an old wood dresser and table just fine. I used big lube and lee 200 grn 429's. No signs of over pressure. I'm not sure how those 45 loads would do, I know guys use them in the open tops. I got my first SAA in 45 colt after my Schofield because the 45 Colts were knocking the lever apart and spilling my shells everywhere .That was with factory winchester cowboy loads too. I wish I'd kept it, I sold it off back before I started reloading. Wish I still had it to try some 45 schofields in it or some really watered down colt loads. Maybe someday I'll get another one...after my spencer...and rolling block

Do not know if I qualify for this forum.  I have 2 army '60's percussion that I am in the process of converting.  Have completed one, waiting on the 2nd one, conversion parts (backorder). I have not shot these as main match revolvers, have always used the '73's all Uberti's.  The armies (Pietta's) I have had for a long time, I saw this forum and started seeing folks conversions and I thought, I can do that, plus it will give me more pistols to shoot... laugh.  So if I do not qualify... I will come back after I convert my 2nd army.  I have not seen anyone where I shoot, use percussions that have been converted. We have a couple of pokes who shoot them in black powder, but no conversions.  In fact I have only seen one member who shoots sometimes with a '72 open top.  So when mine are converted and I use them...maybe others will also.

This is a sickness, I can feel it in my bones but . . .alas, I had no cure for the assuagement of my fever other than entering into this madness.

Being an impractical person, I chose the 1860 Richard Mason conversion (Army) in .44 Colt for my very first Cowboy Action weapon.  It is far too pretty to be handled by mere humans.  Anyway, I assume this warrants membership in this grand assemblage of like-afflicted individuals?  I do hope so, I am always looking for a new group of cornered folks to tell all my lies to.

I chose the eight inch projectile conveyance as it would bring me in closer proximity to any targets and when I miss, I can pistol whip the targets to the dirt much more effectively.

Yours,

Mean Bob

Same here, wanted one since my dad took me to a gun show and explained them to me about 4.5 decades ago.  I just think the lines of the 1860 are so elegant; but, the cap and ball revolvers, while a hoot, are meant for people with more patience than I myself am in possession of.

Really want an open top .45 next.

Well here is my plan And I figgured this out by myself . I started with the 72 Open Top in .44 Colt's ,but I need a .38 in the 1851 navy with 5-1/2 barrel. Then I can get the one I realy like the best, the Richards& Mason transition mdl. Army grip in .44 Colt's .Could not start with that one ,heck then I would have had no reason to buy the others .  Sounds like a plan.....Dusty.

Nowadays i shoot a Cimmaron 1872 in 38 sp , an ASM 1860 conversion in 38 sp. an ASM 1860 and an Uberti Walker.along with some of Col Colts later offerings.

Howdy Gus, pleased to meet you.  Sounds like a nice mess of sidearms.  Looking at a .38 now myself . . .the '51 pattern although I would take the OT.

Cheers pard!

Hello folks,
By the way, as you can see, this is my first post; just joined.
I think I may qualify for the STORM Group.
I'm just starting Cowboy Action Shooting, and for now I'll use my Ruger New Vaqueros.
By accident, I started to collect some STORMs.
I have 2 Pietta 1851 Navies, .44 and .36; and an Uberti 1851 Navy in .36.
As for the cartridge open tops, I have an Uberti RM 1851 Navy with 7.5" barrel in .38; an Uberti RM 1860 Army with 5.5" in .38; an Uberti Open Top Early Model with 5.5" barrel in .38; a Cimarron Firearms (Uberti) 1851 Navy Man With No Name with 7.5" barrel in .38.
I decided to stick with .38 as I have a bunch of .357s anyway.

Hope I may become a member here...
My name's Jordan Goodwin, I go by Capnball on most forums (yeah, I know-original, ain't it?). Some of y'all may remember me. I'm also a member of the SSS, as I owned a .56-50 Scpencer Carbine at one time (sold it out of necessity, WANT ANOTHER eventually). I am an ACW reenactor, blackpowder nut, and amateur BP gunsmith and BPC reloader. I'm not into CAS- yet. ;D Maybe when the budget gets a little more loose. I absolutely love anything that goes BOOM and makes plenny o' smoke. I've owned numerous repros of Colt's Revolving Pistols, from Walkers to Pockets, and love them all. Unfortunately, I'm so poor, I've always had to trade for the next one, so to speak. Anywho, I think my favorite all-around holster gun is the 1860 Army, followed by the Dragoons and Walker. One thing: I've never owned a cartridge pistol, although I've worked on and shot a few. I want an open top or conversion so bad- I dream about them!

Howdy CasCity STORM,

Been looking around, seems like this is the place to be,  I was an advid WW2 minded collector for quite a while and got up to 4 rifles, life has changed and now have two.

But somewhere along the way, I sold that enfield at a show, made the mistake (?) of walking around, feasted my eyes on a bit used 1894 30-30 Win  wrangler hoop and 16" barrel.  Sure didnt need it but wanted it, I bought it.  Then I began to wonder how that rifle came about,  thus my 1866 Uberti (that I paid for by selling a 1966 357 Colt Python 4" Nickel!  Yep, thats right!)  and now my love of the 1851 history and look, it may only be a MWNN, but I love these pistols, great shooters,  Like to join here, if that qaulifies!?
For proof I Added the only pic of me I have with it, was from my Honeymoon this spring! Ha!

I would like to come in out of the cold.  Have a pair of OT's and have been shooten them a while now.
one is a 7.5 armygrip   the other is a 5.5 navygrip   both in 44colt/russian.   as I managed to grab 1000 russian
cases that is what I shoot the most, but do have 300cases of .44colt.    these are fun and accurate revolvers
and with a small amount of Claydot powder economical to shoot. as I shoot duelist/double duelist the 5.5 navy
is for my left hand; it don't miss much either.

I shoot Frontiersman in CAS/SASS, using my 1860 or 1851 Pietta's, my Rifle is Uberti 73 Carbine in 44WCF. I shoot a 12 ga. SXS with all brass shells loaded with the Holy Black.

I like Open Tops and the original powder.

How do I join! I'm shooting two 1871-2's with 7.5 inch barrels and just changed one to a 5.5 inch barrel. it had problems so it hasn't been shot much. I do have a C Mason in .44 speical and IJ've worked on the barrel and cylinder clearance for a month now. I think I have it fixed. "O" the two 71's are .44 special also.  I'm going to go to 4.3 gr.s of TB with my loads and a 210gr. bullet. I was looking for the right guns to go with my pedersoli .44-40 pump rifle.  It doesn't look like that's going to happen now.   Dirty MacPill

I would consider it an honor to be a member of this illustrious group if accepted. The open top Colt design to me is the most beautiful pistols ever made. At current count (among my cap & ball collection) I found 23 models about equally divided between Colt and Uberti. Am doing my best to acquire more. Besides, look at my name.  Sincerely,  Navy Six

Hello all-

My two 20yr old open top Piettas were left to me as my father passed years ago.
His navy was his favorite, the 60 army had issues and he never shot it.
I've been working out the issues, most recently arbor fit, wedge fit, and frame lug length on the barrel, working to get solid repeatable barrel fitment.  I may also have some work to do on the bolt.  Very likely to fit a coil spring and plunger for the hand as well.

I've looked through 30 pages of this group's discussions.  What a great resource!
Count me in Please.
As many of you do, I find the 60 Army to be one of the most elegant and handy revolvers ever produced.
I may soon be in the market for a 72 - and will likely chime in on the group's chatter on the cartridge guns.

Thanks for the great archive of discussion!
FZ

request permission to come aboard!

New to CAS, and the wife and I are gearing up. I picked up a Traditions open top replica of a Richards conversion, and debating a 7.5" 1872 conversion, both in .38 special. The Traditions is exceptionally accurate at the range duelist style. Not so much double duelist  :(  For now I will be pairing the Traditions with a Uberti 1873 5.5" with leather from 45Maker

Ordered a Pietta Model 1862 Army Police .36 Caliber Revolver from Cabelas last night to debate on shooting a brace of them.  The Sheriff's 1860 from the same vendor have my eye as well

Should be geared up for our first match in August, so if I need to await then to join all ok.  We are looking for a 'modern' 1897 for my wife to go with her Blackhawks and Rossi

Requesting permission to join STORM please...

have my new alias, shot my first match, and have picked up an ASM 1860 Army and what I "think" is a Traditions Richards Conversion 1 ?  (has the rear sight on the breech ring)
when I get home I am going to post pictures and ask some help in identifying.

Have powder, primers, and pick up round ball tomorrow for the 1860.  The Open Top shoots great, but the trigger is a bit too light.

thanks for your time

I would like to join the posse!  I have been shooting SAA's in 45 colt. You know a SAA is like a nose, everyone has one.  I like to be different so I bought a Cimmaron Richards Transition II in 44 Colt from my good friend Johnny McCrea.  Then at the NCOWS Nationals I found it's mate, and it went home, to the Wisconsin Territories, with me!  These pistols are more shootable then the SAA! I'm having a ball with them.  I'm shooting a full case of APP 3F with a 200 grain bullet.  Next I'm going to have to replace my  Win. 73 in 45 Colt for one in 44-40!

Very interested in Joining, just bought a Centennial Model 44 today in very good condition, can't wait to shoot it! while doing some research about it I found this site. I have had a Uberti .36 Navy for some time. I am interested in learning a great deal more.

I suppose I should also sign on and get a STORM number. I've been hanging around without one long enough. Besides, my first cowboy pistol was an 1851 Navy reproduction back in the early 70's. Darn fine shooter, it was.

Many Thanks.

Actually that would be an 1861 conversion.  Their 1860 would look the same but be in 44 Colt.
Welcome aboard!  I'm sure Major 2 will be along shortly with your STORM number.

Well, I told you it was a '61, but then you didn't post a picture.  Does it have Army or Navy grip?  If it has an Army grip then it would be an 1860 (sort of, that gun never existed in .38 in real life but they called it that).  Prairie Dawg is selling one like that with the Army grip so that made me think of it.

I'm the one getting Prairie Dawg's gun. when it gets here I will post pics of it with my other 2 Opentops, so we can see the differences.
