2009 SASS Convention Report
« on: December 17, 2009, 05:59:51 PM »
First I will start with the Color Guard.

I am pleased to report that 5 members of GAF preformed the Presentation of Colors at the Dodge City Ball Saturday night December 5th at the 2009 SASS Convention in Las Vegas Nevada.  I will post a scan of the program and photos that I lifted from several posted locations.  In the one photo that shows a close up of our team entering at the beginning, the members are from front to back are Dusty Tagalon, Sweetwater Jack, Cowtown Scout, Mr. Mudd and Sixgun Scotsman.  It was an honor to work with these fine gentlemen, three of which were not attending the ball but came and participated in the ceremony.  I wish to thank them all for their service, with a special thanks to Sweetwater Jack for securing the flags and poles from SASS at the event.

I am not sure how many photos I will get posted on each page due to their size.

Usually I wear a Military Uniform at the Banquets and for Costume Contests.  This year I decided to only wear uniforms at the Convention.  So here are photos of the 5 uniforms I wore this year.  The first is an 1872 4th Cavalry Officer Wednesday night at the hospitality warmer and then escorting those ladies plus some more down the strip of Las Vegas to a resturant.

Thursday I was a Confederate Staff Officer from Hood's Texas Brigade.  And it's only fitting that I'm with the lovely Carolina Belles.  I've got 4 photos in this series of photos, 2 during the day and 2 that night.

Saturday I started the day as a Staff Officer in the Engineer Corps in my 1895 Undress Uniform.  I represented Victorian Military and Coon Creek Old West in the Fashion show with this uniform.

During the fashion show (right after lunch) I changed into my 1872 Full Dress Staff Officer Engineering Corps uniform.  So I showed 2 uniforms and was the only Military in the show.

Here's my Dance Partner for the Evening.  The lovely Catawba Kate of the Carolina Belles.  If I showed you a photo of the ladies at our table for the Ball you would be envious.  I was the only male.  ;)

After winning the Best Dressed Military Category the last 2 years at the Convention, this year I served as a Judge.  I am pleased to announce that the Military Category was well represented with probably a dozen entries.  All members of the Color Guard participated.  I don't have photos yet to post but the winners were: 1st Place Capt. George Baylor as General Lee, 2nd Place Sweetwater Jack in his Span Am Naval Uniform, and 3rd was Dusty Tagalon in his Full Dress Infantry Uniform.  Those are the same uniforms they wore for the Color Guard.  Congratulations Jack and Dusty, competition was tuff this year and your uniforms were supurb.

Cowtown,

Hi Captain Barrett
Except for 2 uniforms (I'm up to about 12 now) Coon Creek Old West had made all my basic uniforms and a lot of the accessories.  The Chapeau was a combined effort of Coon Creek Old West and D Bar J Hat Company lead by Coon Creek.  I was told at the Convention that the supplier of helmets Coon Creek has been using has stopped production and that D Bar J is going to work with Coon Creek to start producing the basic helmet shell in another joint production process.

Leta B and Buck of Coon Creek can make or get made about anything you want.  Provide them with photos or page numbers in a resource book they may have, or detail documentation of the regs of what you want they will work with you.  If they don't think they can do it they will tell you what they can do.

Their contact info is Phone: 520-886-8273, Fax: 520-886-8273, Email: Cooncreekoldwest@AOL.COM, 601 S Desert Steppes, Tucson, AZ, 85710, web site http://www.cooncreekoldwest.com/

Here is a photo of the inspiration for my uniform with the Chapeau.  I will also post pics of the Chapeau for you.

Most of the Chapeaus had Black silk trim but mine is copied after a photo with gold lace trim.  Here are a couple of scanned photos from "Hats Off", which is a must have resource book from John P. Langellier as are his books "Army Blue" and "More Army Blue".

all nice pics The chapeau is always hard to get right unless you have a picture to start with as they were a private purchase item and made by quite a few different companies.
