Nothing fancy, sourdough sinner-mon rolls baked a bit ago for the night owls.

Sourdough whole wheat working, should be ready to bake tomorrow after work.

Thanks for coffee Slim.

Turbulent night in Alabama as the last of Harvey pushed thru the area north east.  Tornados to the west and south of us.  Heavy rains and lots of lightning strikes.

My last event is in a week, 300 4th graders going through my station in groups every 1/2 hour for about 4 hours.  Each will get a small fresh baked biscuit.

Morning y'all.
Coffee and tea are ready.

My Ruger SP101 fits a Hunter holster I have. It will work for now.

Going to a toy store this morn with a neighbor.

'Tis 44 and partly cloudy. "Mostly cloudy. A chance of showers in the morning  then a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 60s. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50 percent."

No toy stores today.  Had some breathing issues this morning. And pulled a muscle in my neck/sholder area last evening.  Back to work watching Alabama vs Florida St right now. Only because i don't have cable to watch Auburn

I had an early SP-101 in .38special,Was a great gun, bought it for the wife but when she got pregnant (27 years ago) she stopped carrying. So I traded it for a 4 screw K-22 made in 1948 and I'm still happy with it.

GT's last post in the Longbranch was Friday, I think Harvey had moved on by then.

All sunshine here today. Did some brush hogging, after I took the two tires back to town to get "re-repaired" that I had "fixed" yesterday. Guy who fixed them yesterday doesn't work Saturdays, the other guys in the shop "commented" on how they're tired of re-fixing his work.....

This one was made in 1902. Works flawlessly and it's accurate. JMB was indeed a genius.
These pistols made semi autos a reallity. To the point that a browning became synonyme for pistol in early XXth century Europe.

About being overcome with wildfire...  Yeah, we did.

 http://www.redding.com/story/news/2017/09/02/labor-day-heat-wave-continues-whiskeytown-cautions-against-visits/628959001/

7440 acres, 141 structures destroyed in 6 hours.  This started Wednesday and blocked my route home, so I've been stuck in my tower.  I got to come home Yesterday through a back road, but I spent most of the afternoon working with an engine delivering supplies into the fire area.  Along about eight miles of highway it's an absolute moonscape.  There was one place where a fellow had a bunch of old cars, and those are all puddles of melted metal now.  Nothing made it out of the fire.  The darn thing was moving at 40mph.  I know several people who lost their homes and everything on their properties.  It's not good.

So, there's my news for the week.

Every case is hard to find in grass. >:(
Even .45 ACP cases. They seem to hide from me on purpose. They also have the nasty habit of laying upright with the mouth facing up becoming almost invisible in the grass.

Even though the .32 wasn't ejecting to the grass, I managed to loose one. >:(

Tough. I had a fire near me last month. First time in my life I got evacuated from my home. There was no real danger. But I guess the officials overreacted because of that previous fire that had important loss of lives.

I know .380 is pretty hard to find. My LCP scatters it far and wide-I tried using an 8X10 tarp, but most of them missed it.
Title: Re: Coffee thread for the 9th month of 2017
Post by: litl rooster on September 03, 2017, 09:21:54 PM
Try hanging the tarp like a curtin.  It will pile up on the ground below it. This has worked for me, a tarp or old sheet works best. Cardboard or wood will cause it to bounce.  Since i don't cast i have only reloaded 32 with 31cal balls. Both acp and 32 long. I may have some mixed .32 brass and dies i might be able round up to trade off.

Finding that brass is hard to find on crushed gravel too.

TK glad you are okay.. ya'll  are taking a back seat to Harvey. But we all are praying for snow out there.

I was loading 125 grain TC over some titegroup. At the upper end of chart. It seem to handle them fine in the 2" barrel.

I tried some Hornady critical defence. 96 grains my loads had about same recoil and were very accurate. I never tried a "BoxO Truth" water jug test on them from either that or either of the S&W's, the Critical defence are a $1 a round. So getting too involved i won't. I am not as pretty as Mike Bellvue or Hickok so free ammo doesn't come to me for favorble reviews.

The SP handles .357 just fine. The S&W's are .38's the Model 10 has a replacement barrel and is plus p. Having the Ruger in .357 is a great option.

Morning all.

Still smoky here.  The fire is throwing a lot of sparks and spot fires.  The closest is about 4 miles away and 10 acres.  We're pretty safe here, since this area is pretty well fire safed (trees and lawns trimmed, etc), but we're loading the cars just in case.

Once this all gets over and done, I'm looking at getting an R&D cylinder for my Pietta '51.  I'm thinking I might get a new barrel and cut it to 5.5 inches, maybe shorter, so I can effectively have four guns in one.  ::) I figure a little 5 inch barrel, loaded up with some 38 Short and those snakeshot cups would make a nice little companion when I'm out deer hunting if I felt like popping a squirrel, or jackrabbit.  Plus, conversions are just cool.  ::)

TK, if you get the cylinder intended for use with un-lined .375 bore guns, it's bored straight through, no "step" in the chamber. You could use .357 brass for shotshells, just load powder, wad, shot, another wad. No shot capsule needed.

However-having played with shot rounds in revolvers before, I can't recommend trying them on squirrels or rabbits. Patterns out of a rifled barrel at anything over 8-10 feet is pretty bad.

Almost missed it. I'll be lookin for .25 brass soon enough (not really  ;D). Also waiting for the paperwork for a 1906 FN. Same thing as the Colt 1908 vest pocket but made by FN. As a side note, it was the only JMB design that was manufactured to the same specs in both sides of the pond.

The air is smokey as...smoke?  I don't really have much of a comparison on this one.  75 yard visibility in any case.  Can't walk the dog in it.
I'm not on the tower today.  I've been pulled down to work in town, though doing what I couldn't say.  The boss just said meet him in town at normal time.  Alrighty then.  My luck, I'll probably end up wiping toilets and sweeping engine bays.  ::)

The fire is mostly up in wilderness area away from houses now, so people are breathing a little easier, metaphorically anyway.  The smoke is thick enough that nobody is really breathing easily.   10,930 acres as of last night's infrared camera mapping flight.

Starting to get warm outside- might be time to have a glass of sweettea and maybe a nap.

I heard that Montana has over a Million acres involved in fire statewide. That is better than 1600 square miles. Using a section map of 640 acres per mile. I predict a horrible hunting season this year. Merrels might be good in the spring though.

My Kawa is not a cafe racer. It is what may be called a "street fighter" very nimble (and confourtable for a very slim saddle) in town, but still capable of 150 mph on open road.

The Suzuki on the other hand, wasn't exactly a town bike, but over 120 mph on open road was a pleasure. It topped at about 180 mph. And it did many times. ;D

Evening all.

Fire burned another 500-1000 acres today.  They hadn't finished mapping when I got off at 1800.  But those were the guesses.

And, my new job is......

Radio Comms.  So today was day one of training, which involved paperwork, and sitting in an air conditioned trailer taking supply orders over the radio.  Not too bad.
The downside is, I'll be working 13+ hour days, 6 days a week.  Though the overtime will be nice.

Major, hope the winds and waters keep back from you.

That a KZ1000 or 900? I had 2 or 3 of the KZ750 twins, and man those were great bikes! I called them Japanese Triumphs. They would top out around 120, but even in 5th, you twist the wick and it was like a nitros boost. And, they would go ANYWHERE! I spent almost as much time off road as I was on the road. I used to chase dirtbikers with them. Oh, the stories I could tell about the fun I had with them!

Not really for the general public, but thought some folks here might be interested.

Got 3 cooking related pages on FB, sister groups as it were.

Any way anything gets posted like recipes kinda is hard to keep sorted. Went out and took the bull by the horns and build a forum board for our recipes.   Core bunch in the groups are tight knit like we are, Stu was a big part of them.  Anyway as I think it over I will in time add other than recipe boards and I think our group will move away from FB and more to our own board.

Been live for about 36 hours and have a little over 30 members and have transferred some of my good info over.

Anyway if anyone is interested:

http://cicc-recipe-forum.freeforums.net/

CICC stands for Cast Iron Coffee Chat, a spin off coffee chat group modeled after us misfits here in Tall Tales.

I spent the day in a trailer again today.  But alas, the department who says no, said no to my transfer to comms.  So, I'm back at the lookout tower until at least Saturday.  Then on Monday, we'll see where I end up.  Until then, I'll be choking on smoke and reading books.

Charlie Cat. 3 hit the west coast and roared thought the center of the State.  Followed by Frances & Jeanne  finally IVAN.

Charlie, Frances & Jeanne were direct hits in Central Florida with the eyes crossing the same real-estate  26 miles SW west of my location...

THIS one will cross that T  as it tracks straight up the center of the State.....Atlanta GA. is now threatened.

THIS one is way worse  we will get the EYE wall yet again  :o

The roads are parking lots ....People evacuating the Key's & S. Fla....now are being chased out of State ...

Florida Turnpike, I-95 & 1-75 are reversed as South Bound lane are closed  to run NORTH bound.

Right you are Major, it was Ought 4. I guess the reason Ought 5 sticks in my mind, was all the aftermath. We lived in Palm Bay when Charles, Francis and Jeanne hit. We got through the first one ok, lost roofing and fencing in the second, got flooded out with the third. When the mold started, we were treking up to a hotel in Titusville to stay, because it was the only room. Me, the wife, two kids, two dogs, bird, lizard. Going back and forth twice a day, taking the wife to work, kids to school, and working on fixing the house. One of the housekeepers let one of my dogs out of the room. They kicked us out, saying it "escaped".

We got a really small 2 room apartment in Melbourne after that, and the wife's daughter decided to bring her kid and join us. Lost the best dog I ever had then.

The news only shows the immediate damage, never what happens during the year immediately after.

Best of luck to you Major, and anybody else in the path. Talking about plywood, it was right around the Ought 4 hurricane season, one of my wife's coworkers had their precut plywood set out. They were getting ready to put it up before the storms hit, but got sidetracked by something. When they got back to the task, their plywood was gone. Turned up on the neighbor's house... and of course, it didn't fit quite right. Times like this brings out the animals, don't it?

I went to the range and played with some toys.  My Spencer Carbine is still giving me fits, and hopefully, I'll get some help on the Spencer Shooting Society Forum.  My Winchester '94 in 38-55 (Legendary Frontiersman Model) still shoots well.  And, my new (to me) Uberti Deluxe High Wall in 38-55 was awesome!  Off a sand bag, I got a 1-1/2" five-shot group at 50 yards, with three of the shots within 3/4"!  I've got to order more bullets and get this thing to shooting out to 300 yards!

.38-55Win; love the old ca'tridges.  I have five Model 94 rifles, one each in .25-35, .32-40. .38-55, .30 Win., and .32 Win. Spec.  I was playing with my Henry repro, in .44-40, and the 94s in .38-55 and .32 WS one day on a range with berms at 200 and 300 yards.  Had some metal 5 gal. buckets out there that had been used for hod, and they had dried cement/concrete built up on the insides, and dribbles all down the outsides, weighed about 25 ponds or so, and I set some up at 200 and 300, and started plinking; the .44-40 was stoked with both black powder and some in smokeless, .32 was all smokeless, and the 38 was black.  Short tale is, the 44 and 38 had trajectories like a rainbow, but once the range was sorted out they hit like a hammer.  The .44s would rock those buckets, and once in a while, knock one over at 200; the .38s just whacked everything, and even at 300, the cement would fly, and the buckets would roll.  Was a  fun day.

I'm down from the tower until tomorrow.  I worked an overtime day yesterday, so today is my weekend.

Thursday we had a good thunderstorm and rain on Thursday. Downstrikes within 1/4 ,mile of the house.  Made me feel real confident about sitting on top of a mountain all day.  :-\

The fire here is up to 21,000 acres, but they've lifted most of the evacuations, so things are sort of going more towards normal.

I hope everybody came out ok. Being a former Flordidian, I know what kind of havoc a big storm can cause, even if you aren't directly hit by it. It was thankfully only a nasty tropical storm when we got it. It was still enough to drop some dead pines around the cabins. One of them hit the little cabin, but the cabin seems to have survived it ok. The big cabin got a little water logged, mostly around the window I put in on the wife's side of the bed. One of the trees tried to come down, but got hung up on another tree. That is good, because the wife parked right in it's path. When I saw it leaning at a 45, I hustled out to move the car quick! Needless to say, it was enough to make me pucker a bit as the wind blew, and the tree creaked and threatened to squash me.

I have that problem too... but it is my chainsaw that is sick. I tried to take some of these trees down a few days before the storm, and the saw died halfway through the first tree. So, I then took my axe to it, only to discover my boy had beat the snot out of it. It no longer has an edge, and apparently, I no longer have a file either.

Table Rock Nebraska is about 75 miles SE of me and has Living History Days for area  4th grades, they are bussed in from up to 50 miles away.  We had 8 stations and they get a 1/2 hour at each one.  My demo being trail cooking.

We had about 350 kids total and they got to see biscuits being baked in dutch ovens and each got a small biscuit.  They were great, had a lot of interest and asked good questions.

The soldier is a local fellow in the historical society a and was just wandering around adding color.  Turned out he was a distant relative, his great grandpa being my grandma's brother.

4 inches total since Monday
The gage was kind of sideways from wind so not sure of accuracy.

Three Figs also have a mess of Alabama Crimson Okra( the tips are Crimson red) that needs harvested. This okra was volunteered back. Will save a few pods for new seeds. I planted the Fig, 3 summers ago first fruits. Planted 5 apple trees the previous spring. Never have had a bloom. Pruned Pear tree that year and get a bunch of utility pears each summer since.   Blue berries had a few but did not cover them fast enough birds or chickens beat me to them. Of course i was inmoblized from mid May thru 1st if Aug.  Elderberries (cold medicenes) Del you may have a recipe for it, blackberries and muscadines grow wild on the property.

Not sure why apples haven't bloomed.

Had an apple tree in my yard in my first house in Prattville.  There wasn't another apple tree in the neighborhood.  It yielded a bunch of fruit!  The ripe apples were green and tough. I used them for target practice with my long bow.  One day our next-door neighbor asked if she could have some of the apples.  In return, she baked a pie for me.  After that, I stopped using the apples as targets and gave them to her!  They were excellent baking apples!

I had an uncle that grew muscadines or either scuppernongs (SIC?) in his back yard.  He made wine from them, and preserves.  Never tasted the wine, but the preserves were awesome!

We have tons of wild Muscadine growing here, and when I can, I make some mean wine. Problem is, when they do bear fruit, it is like 30' up in the tree tops. Many a time I wished I had a Helper Monkey to go pick them.

Since, Sunday I've also sported a Glock 17 Gen. 4 in pancake.
Mine is Agricultural / Residential  zoning  family homes with about 35% density  (rural) horse & livestock .
Without power it was black as coal ...perfect for malcontents, miscreants and looters.

Good morning all! Wife's birthday was yesterday, spent the morning and afternoon up in Athens visiting the folks, had a mini party while we were there. Went to bed last night, and I decided to splurge by leaving the genny running for the fans. Oh we slept sooo good! She's still sleeping it off ;)

I also stopped by the hunting store on the way out of town. My new friend there wants me to make a pair of slings for him, and he wants cartridge strips on them, so I needed to pick up some cartridges to be sure I get them right. Was going over the details of what he wanted- How many cartridges do you want on them? Medium Brown? Basketweave? As I was getting ready to leave, I had one more question- Which shoulder will these be for, left or right? "Oh, I'm going to carry them on the right shoulder... Wait a minute! That won't make any difference!" I just had to chuckle...

Good to hear ya got power back, Major 2.

Have fun and be safe, Major.

On the way back from my morning constitutional, I helped pull out the tractor that was planting winter wheat. It got in a wet spot. I got to drive the BIG John Deere that has duels all the way around. Bullet rode with me.

I was going to mow the lane because the hunters have started archery season and we gathered the horse wire down the lane. One tire was flat on the tractor, so I pumped it up and added air to a rear tire, but found a leak in the sidewall. New back tires are on my future.  ::) So I have been trying to get the tire chains off put on about ten years ago.

Spent the latter part of the week constructing a new chicken run around chicken house #2.  Using 16 foot by 42 inch high panels, these have the 4 x 4 inch spacing. Much smaller than spacing than ones we used a couple years ago.  The new yard is 42 feet by  20 feet. With the 10 x12 house in the corner. We will work on house #1 the oldest one next. Then start some new hens.  We will use the balance of panels to extend goat grazing. And to build the pig a permanant home. < just a pet till he makes one of us mad lol.  😂

Slim i am happy knowing i will never have to chain up a tire the rest of my life. Sorry about needing tires though

M2 good luck on your Longboat Key rescue efforts.

5% I suppose is better that saying 165,000 plus,  Apopka , just NW of Orlando is still down.

the big 3 here are FP&L (Florida Power & Light ) OUC    (Orlando Utilities Commission)  and Duke Electric ...

It Duke that's taking the HEAT .... :(      I'm on OUC's Grid

Greg, left Monday , pulled his boat to south Ft. Lauderdale launched and headed down ....
took him 7 1/2 hours by boat to do 123 miles.... :o

Rodney and I are headed down Saturday, Orlando to marathon 343 miles , we new know we can get as far as Marathon and launch there  ( that is as far as they will let relief or aid volunteers drive .)
From there by boat  it's  only 17 miles to Long Key., or someone from down there can come meet you for the exchange .

Arnie ( our retired driver ) is answering text messages ....his house was flooded,  but his boat(s) rode out OK ( one is Sport Fisherman the other a Houseboat, where he is living...he has a diesel generator ( we are taking fuel )
we've got water , pet food , LARP's , can goods , and building materials. Arnie will meet us with his boat.

I will be an adventure for sure...

Evening Y'all, The Match went well, was July hot (Upper 80's and 70% + humidity) I surprised myself shooting Duelist at this match by not coming in last (only the 3rd time shooting Duelist) and I came in 133rd out of 250 overall. I'm still recuperating from the weekend but that has been slowed down with Babysitting my Grand daughter all week. I'll bank the coals so they're good for the morning crew. Y'all have a good one.

How many Coke cans did that take?

Mornin' all- coffee and water it up.

Morning y'all. Had some wicked weather roll through yesterday. Started off with a lot of thunder, followed by a torrential downpour. We had a lightning strike in camp, hit one of the pines in front, near the camp road. Blew the outer insulation of the power cord from the genny to the cabin, killed two of the outlets on the genny. It also managed to kill the tv, the well, and the ceiling fan... and scared the snot out of 9 dogs and the wife. She said she felt the jolt from the lightning inside. Aside from that, still surviving in the woods.

And the coffee maker is still working :)

Morning all.

I'm down from the mountain today.  Was yesterday, too.  Just too doggone cold at night!  Tuesday night was 35 ambient, but with the wind and s**w, they were calling it down below 20.  Last night was supposed to be sub-zero. :o  I said "Nope!" and came home.  But, for my trouble all I got was a transmission problem.  For some reason the torque converter isn't staying connected.  I added some fluid, but it didn't help much.  I limped it the last 15 miles (naturally, the last miles are over a mountain pass), and called the boss to tell him I wouldn't be at the tower today.  He gave me a paid day off at half hourly wage.  So at least I have that.  But darn these fancy doo-dads and self shifting cars.  :-\  I want a manual again.

Good afternoon, good to be here; reheated coffee is fine with me.  I've been dropping by almost every day, but not taking the time to write anything, had too much going on; but it seems to be settling down to a dull roar again.

Watched those two hurricanes with interest, for those of you n their way, and friends in the greater Houston area.  All seem to have escaped major disaster, just losing some trees, and getting lots and lots of rain - but no flooding where they are.  Our younger son and his wife are long haul truckers, and they had been running a contract haul from Pueblo, CO to Port Arthur, TX - forth and back.  When the storm was eminent, their dispatcher held them in Pueblo for a few days, but decided that they could get one more run to Port Arthur in before it hit, so off they went.  They got into Port Arthur when the first of the outer bands hit, actually, drove in heavy rain from north of Houston; got unloaded, and headed back to Pueblo in heavy downpour, and it went with them as far a Dallas before they got out of the rain.  Back in Pueblo, they sat for a few days, and the company decided the job was going to be on indefinite hold, so off the went to other loads and adventures, mostly around the east and north, and mostly in rain, as the storm moved on north.  They showed up here at home this morning without notice, stopping by for a day on their way to L. A. (Torrance); is good to see them.

We have gotten our butts kicked by some sort of bug.  I came down with it in early August, and the Missus got it a few days later; it hurt me, but put her in the hospital with pneumonia for five days.  She came home with an order for oxygen and other meds.  But, we are getting better, slowly; I am going through a mild relapse right now, but hopefully, the antibiotics will kill it this time.

Glad to hear that you're on the mend, Li'l Roo, and back to your routines.

Time to go visit with the kids for a while before they head out again.

Later.

Morning all.  Coffee and assorted other liquids on the coals.  Help yourself.

Headed to the tower again today.  Truck is still not working, but I got a ride with my mother, and she'll be staying the day, and then we'll go deer hunting tonight.

Took my truck out and worked on it some yesterday.  The transmission was a little overfull, so we sucked a little out and tested it a bit.  Drove it up a mountain pass and back.  Worked fine on the way up, but coming down we were running into the same problems as before.  Took it home, ate some dinner, then took it to a shop.  The first day they had was Oct. 2, so I guess that's when I'll figure out what's going on.  One of the guys there has almost the same truck, and he said it sounds like it's either a sensor in the transmission, or the transmission itself.  One will cost me $30, plus about 2 hours labor.  The other will cost around $2500.  It doesn't seem likely that it's the transmission, since it's a factory reman with 15,000 miles on it, but stranger things have happened.

Anyway, off I go to prepare myself for another day of s**w.

Made it back from the Keys adventure...the 500lbs of pet food was MOST appreciated  :)

Water, MRE's, a dry goods as well , we had 50 gal. of diesel for Arnie , which he shared....

the devastation is eye opening .....wrecked pieces of homes &  boats strung out in every direction ....
I read were one a 42' sailboat , based in Key West washed ashore in MELBOURNE BEACH (332 miles ) , the owner was in jail  charged with attempted murder, kidnapping-false imprisonment, and sexual assault.  :o
The boat was in quite good condition, except looters stripped it of all electronics before authorities could secure it . :(
It had red X's on it, indicating the Coast Guard had inspected it for survivors at sea  :-\  no reason was given why they did not take it in tow.  ( overwhelmed is my guess )

Evening all.

Had a city trip today.  Went well.  Went hunting after getting home.  Stalked a buck for 45 minutes, bumped it across an old logging road from the clear cut we were in to the next one over.  As we were trying to cross the road without spooking it again (we could hear it moving around in the brush,) when someone across the cut nailed it.  So much for that deer.  :-\
