I will be hosting the 2017 Grand Muster, June 23th, 24th & 25th, at my farm.
This Muster will be open to anyone in the GAF. If not currently a member I can help you register. (Membership in the GAF is free and easy) By using Google Earth and going to 41°40'16.24"N Latitude and 99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Grand Muster site. Registration forms will be available on the dispatches page of the Grand Army's Web site. Participation will be limited to 40 shooters. Registration is $80. Meals will be available on site from Delmonico. Those wishing to attend but not compete may do so without registration fee, but be sure to pay the meal fee if you plan to eat with us.
The planned activities include: a 4 stage GAF steel target main match, a Long Range Rifle match, a Precision Pistol match and a GAF Expansion Era Match. While 4 stages for the main match doesn't sound like much these four stages will be of the skirmish format and will feature about 20 knock down targets per stage. Stage design will recount scenes from Red Cloud's War of 1867. Round counts will be dependent on the number of times the shooter needs to shoot at each target to get it to fall. 100 rounds at least would be a good plan. This is a match that participants say truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
Shooters will be able to sight in their rifles on Thursday and Friday afternoon and evening. Sighting in your rifles for the distances used is STRONGLY encouraged.
Long Range Rifle will be 100-300yds. on armor so full power jacketed bullets are fine for it.
This muster will be a primitive camping event. We will have a tent city and I have tentage for about 10 individuals if you don't have your own contact me, I can help. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.
The average high temperature in this area on June 25th is around 84 degrees
I've attached a FAQ sheet and a suggested equipment list.
We expect to run 4 Squads shooting concurrently. Each squad will cycle through 3 of the main matches, the long range match and the sidearm match on Saturday. The Long Range Match and the Precision Pistol Match will each be treated as a stage. We will run ahead of schedule if possible.
The banquet will return to the Comstock Premier Lodge http://www.comstocklodge.com/ (http://www.comstocklodge.com/) for 2017 and the price of the banquet is included in your registration. If you are bringing a spouse or child who isn't a registered shooter the cost of an extra ticket for them is $15.00 Lodging is available at the lodge as well (get your reservations early). I've also reserved a block of rooms at the Wildlife Inn at nearby Taylor as well (308-942-6234) early registration is also suggested
-
Thanks Jerry, looking forward to it as always.
-
Karol and I are already looking forward to the '17 muster. The last two have been just excellent. We'll be there early again and planning to be available to help as needed...
-
I've missed the last two due to work issues, but I'm going to do my damnedest to make this one.
-
If I stay retired, I won't miss it!!!
-
Oh hell, I'll be there!
Msgt Long
-
Just a heads up. If anyone named Fetterman shows up, DON'T FOLLOW HIM!
-
Col. Pitspitr:
We are wanting to come out and shoot it next June.
I was re-elected into the American Legion post's adjutant position yet again.
But I may just HAVE to miss the Department meeting next year! :P
Mustang Gregg
-
Will be great to meet LTC Long and Mustang Greg, who I may have seen at a SASS convention but my memory is not the greatest.
I will stay retired so Emerald Anne and I should be there a few days early to help out.
Locals is there a closer RV place with hookups than Victoria Springs (it is really lovely so I could stay there).

Yes, there is a city RV park in Sargent with a few spaces, Taylor also has a small city RV Park and my Dad has a small RV park about 10 miles away. None of them are as pretty as Victoria Springs.
So glad you will be able to attend. Cathy really enjoyed visiting with Ann and Shirley
-
I hope to make it this next year!
Sorry my USCG duties have been keeping me very busy!

Maybe we need to have our General put in a word with your Admiral (Does Guard have Admirals?)

The City park looks to have no shade, how about your dad's place for shade and 50 amp hook ups?
-
There's shade in the afternoon but not morning. I'll find out the amperage of his hook ups.
-
Hey General will you be putting up a registration sheet which we can download?
Msgt Long
-
SWMBO aka Anne just joined a Choir and will be singing at Carnegie Hall NYC 14-18 June. So much for me getting to Sargent on Monday to help set up. We will most likely get there on the 21st. May actually stay until Tuesday this year, who knows.
Anne also just invited Shirley to link up again. Once I get the info will register. Love victoria springs, not loving the hour a day to and from the range.
-
Hey General will you be putting up a registration sheet which we can download?
I'll get on it
-
I may not have a battle rifle (that I can get ammo for) by next Muster.
Is there still a forager category for guys firing pistol-caliber rifles?
Respectfully,
Mustang Gregg
-
Forager would be using a shotgun, but you can shoot either pistol or rifle caliber lever actions(2 different categories)
-
Greg would-be better off in the flame thrower class, the man is a heck of a cooks fireman.
-
Scout - Pistol caliber rifle, single action revolver
Militia - Rifle caliber civilian spec rifle (Ex.= Winchester 94) , any GAF spec handgun
Forager - Single barrel, double barrel or lever action shotgun, single action revolver.
-
Can I use a bow and arrow in any of the categories? ???
I'm looking for an excuse to create a native american character and make a long bow...
of course, it would require no hair cut between now and the muster, a good sun tan, a very close shave, and some dark dye for my hair...unless it all turns grey before then! :P
-
Troy, you could always use some spray paint for the hair............
-
Yeah.
-
Maybe Quickfire could suggest a brand. ::)
-
I think Quickfire found out what NOT to use, anyways!
-
If you're serious, and as this is the Halloween season upon us, look for Black Cherry Jello or similar dark Jello. You can use it as a temporary hair dye.
Just hope it doesn't rain. Or the bees don't find you . . .
Or, Halloween costume shops or theatrical supply shops usually stock black dyes for temporary hair color change.

-
Thanks RCJ! I am serious about an indian character. I even shaved my moustache this morning! I have the clothing to pull off an "apache" (cotton tunic, high top mocs, cotton breeches, headband), at least from 10 feet away. I'd have more work to do to look like I came from a plains tribe.
There are some seasonal Halloween stores that pop up this time of year, plus the "Party City" stores. I'll check there.
-
I have added the registration form to the original post.
-
Congratulations to Lt. Col. Don Long, the first official registrant!

I tried a temporary dye this week. It works, but it was MESSY!
I think I can live with the color for a few weeks to a month, so I'll just use a "permanate" dye wihen the time comes. Previously, my vanity has had me use "Just for Men" for my beard/moustache, and it works okay. I may do it this week for an match this weekend, as I now have a complete outfit for an Apache...including custom made (by yours truly) apache pointed-toe boot moccasins. Next comes the plains indian impression...
-
Troy, I think for an authentic Apache outfit, you don't need any color for the beard and mustache, what you need for that is some tweezers, just to be "period correct".
-
The beard and moustache are gone! The color is for the hair on my head, and I did it this evening!
-
As long as the CinCFam approves . . .
-
Still don't understand why two guys who seem "fairly" normal (you know who you are) would be so obsessed with dying their hair black to portray an Indian. Wouldn't an "old" Indian have gray hair? MAYBE they're trying to be young again! On another note, will the 2017 skirmish be cap and ball friendly? My thinking is that 51 navies and 1860 armies would be the most historically accurate for 1866, but having to hit multiple knockdown targets 3 times to kill them with a .36 would be a PITA for the shooter, and really boring(funny for a little while) for everyone else to watch! Pretty sure I'm going as a civilian(Scout), because the Henry would be an appropriate rifle, and a helluva lotta fun!
-
As long as the CinCFam approves . . .
This has me at a loss. What is CinCFam?
-

"Normal" is a setting on a washing machine!
I do fit the "obsessed" category though. And, after a day of my hair pretty much all one color, I'm almost wishing that I would have dyed it all gray. It will be back to "normal" in about a month.
I think that cap and ball revolvers would be fun and definitely period correct, too. I'd like to use them in the event, as well.
-
Never had mine dyed or permed, never will. I did get it cut just before the muster, should need it cut before the 2018 one again.
Driving me crazy, needs to grow out a little more so I can tie the back, new job don't allow hats or bandannas.
Working in a Qwik-Shop in the poor part of town, and loving it, the people are fantastic, almost every color and creed, except few of the Yuppie folks, glad of that. Been told many times I'm now part of the hood, they all know my name.
Need to bring you guys something called Milwaukee's Best Ice or the one called Hurricane, must be good stuff, sell lots of it and it's only 99 cents for a 24 Oz can.
-
This has me at a loss. What is CinCFam?
CinCFam = Commander in Chief family
"da Boss lady"
"SHE" that must be obeyed
Choose one they are all interchangeable in title .... :)

Milwaukee's Best Ice there is reason it's $.99 ... it is malodorous ...read stinks .... if one can get by the putrid smell , it is like Schlitz
will leave you with a sick headache ...it is cheap drunk though.
I haven't seen Hurricane Malt down here ...though I don't really pay that much attention.
I have friend & ex coworker , that got into Micro Brewing as a hobby ..now he is has changed his career ...and is a Lager & Ale Distributer for Shipyard and other malts.

I am rather vain, but I don't miind my gray hair at all. Apparently, nobody is believing the objective is to get dark/black hair such as the native americans. I think that I will now put down the shovel and quit digging. The hole is pretty deep now... ::)

Wise words, RCJ! I like the adopted angle, would make for a good and believable back story.
Honestly, I'm not too happy with the dye. Though the color looks natural, the fact that my hair is all one color doesn't look natural. It will wear off in about 4 to 6 weeks, and right now, I'm not considering doing it again. Guess I'll be a half-breed or adopted tribesman...and in reality, I am part breed. My mother's mothers' father was said to be Seminole. My research is indicating that he may have been Chickasaw. Either way, he was part of the 5 civilized tribes. I'll keep going with my research and hopefully, I'll have some more conclusive information in the future.
My apologies for hi-jacking the thread...
-
Hi Y'all
So, Grand Daddy Harv was bald, used the Norelco on everything above the collar bones every morning. I have Pictures of Dad in WW2, his hair receded an inch in 42, 43, 44, and 45 ending in a comb over. I have a full head or hair so far, and mine is just glad to be here. In order to have a hair color, you have to have hair and gray is a hair color.
The beard coloring products definitely colored my beard years ago, but the color didn't seem to be one that occurred in nature.
I put in for vacation for Muster back in at least August.

According to my admittedly very quick research, it doesn't seem that there were conversion cylinders available for C&B revolvers until 1868, the first one being a .46 rimfire for the 58 Remington. Spare loaded/uncapped cylinders for an 1858 Remmy would seem to be the quickest reload option for a revolver in use in 1866. Was there a standard issue sidearm in 1866 for a horse soldier, Dragoon? 1860 Army?
-
I believe the Army had, more or less, standardized on the 1860 Army and what we refer to as the 1858 Remington. I believe there were still some '51 Navies still in service, as well, but the Army preferred the .44's. I'm sure there were still some Dragoons floating around, as well. Firearms technology was evolving rapidly at the time.
-
On another note, will the 2017 skirmish be cap and ball friendly? My thinking is that 51 navies and 1860 armies would be the most historically accurate for 1866
Don't expect a stage like water carrier ravine this year. You could probably use cap and balls without too much problem

Just a passing observation...
Hurricane, if it is the brew canned in "By God, Texas!", has 8% good stuff in it over the normal, or as some say, regular brewskies 3%. Hurricane also is the same or near-same recipe for what us oldsters from the 60's (read last century) called malt liquor, the small can with a Bull on it. Hurricane has a solid flavor and is enjoyed from the Gulf Coast up North through the Corn Belt here in Ioway. It has taken a while for it to become as popular as the old brands from the 60's but local consumers have been buying multiple cases to keep the economy going upward, so far so good! It takes a real positive attitude to consume a case a week but somebody has to do it, so there!
Congrats on your new job Del, I can just see the local grandmas stopping in to get a gallon of milk and leaving with a smile and 4 new recipes, HAH!
Best regards and don't drink and drive after a few Hurricanes or you'll be thinking off-road and hollering "Here, hold my beer and watch this!"

Several friends of mine use to do a "White Indian" impression for reenactments and living history events from the F&I Wars into the early Federalist time period. Their impressions were great!
A major aid was adopting a hair style for the native American tribe that had taken then in. Most of these were Eastern tribes, and that hair style could vary greatly. To the point of shaving most of, if not part, the hair off their heads.
I don't recall them dying their hair if it were lightly colored. They weren't playing Native Americans but rather captives raised by the Indians. However, they did use body paint in the style and colors for that tribe. All of this was well documented.
My best.
Blair
-
Thanks Blair...wish I'd have thought about this before the dye job!
Scotty, as for C&B pistols, how about a Remington with spare cylinders? I'm considering this route, but may need a pack mule for the spare cylinders if my revolver shooting doesn't improve over last muster!

No worries about me drinking any more, gave it up years ago, the ICE stuff has been slushed and the slush removed to do the same, old German idea.

Well you could join some of them for Paul Masson brandy and a Tropical Fusion Swisher, 2 shot bottles and a 2 pack of seegars will set you back about $3.25, tax included. ;D

The beard coloring products definitely colored my beard years ago, but the color didn't seem to be one that occurred in nature.
Unfortunately, although my hair is pretty evenly "Salt & Pepper", the beard/mustache is pretty much just salt. If I could get some salt & pepper beard color, it might make me a more believable Foreign Legionnaire. Or 1914 Sailor. Or pretty much anything in uniform. ;D
-
Troy, I think the Remington would be good with spare cylinders, but would it be as good as SPARE GUNS? Pull a Josie Wales on Red Clouds boys!

Del,
I've been working in "the hood" for the last 25 years and Malt Liquor in one container or another has always been very popular. The 40 Oz. bottle of Old English (O E is the most poplar around here but they all come in a "40", Mickie's, Steel Reserve, Colt 45, St Ides, etc., etc.) is our most popular improvised weapon. It's simply always at hand whenever our residents feel the need express themselves and didn't bring their Glock. It's also appropriate for all occasions, from a domestic to a street fight.
-
Years ago in Whiteclay, the 24 oz. "Double Colt .45" was the drink of choice among the natives. Seemed to keep them lubed up pretty well!
-
Colt 45 is still drank by the older ones, the younger tend to go with the others. Had a very old lady unhappy the other night when we only had one can of Colt 45. ;)
-
Just remember that when one of the denizens of the hood points his Glock at you demanding the meager contents of the till, give it to him with a smile and don't try to be a hero. Believe it or not the company will fire you if you interfere with getting him out of your "Stop and Rob" as quickly as possible. They'll fire you just as quickly if you forget to use the drop safe and end up giving him too much.

Oh I know that, to be truthful the Hood is a poor section but doesn't have that much crime, that's in a different area and we are so busy there, we are not as good of a target as other stores, usually 3-4 customers in there at once.
Did get hit with a counterfeit bill tonight, who counterfeits $2 bills? Well someone did. ::)

I hope to get my registration off before I die...which could be soon, as Mrs. Red may hurry that along. Hopefully, she will be understanding as to why I bought an Armi Spencer Carbine in 56-50 on gunbroker. Of course, most everyone on this forum understands that it was necessary so that I could be period correct for the 2017 Grand Muster....right?? It with my Remington NMA will make for a fine combination for Red Cloud's War impressions!

Sounds TOTALLY reasonable to me!
-
The General did a fine job of repelling hostiles at the recent Ruckuss at Racoon Forks with his Spencer! (at least at MOST times it was faster than a muzzleloader!)
-
Mrs. Red's only comment was "I hope it is okay. I hate buying something without seeing it, first".
I didn't reveal the price to her....I just told her that it was "expensive". I'll have to ease the reloading supplies on at a later date...will get expensive since I don't cast!

The registrations are starting to role in. Don't be the last one standing when the music stops. Get yours in today!
-
General, Due to a chronological deficiency on my part, I need to be either reminded or reprimanded concerning the disposition of my registration for the up-coming Grand Muster. Could you please rectify this situation and at the same time give us a listing of those already registered (looking for reprobates in the ranks).
In His Service,
LTC Montgomery Little, GAF Senior Chaplain
-
Good point. I'll get a list put together this week. As I recall your name wouldn't be on it at this point
-
I am going to get the registration in the mail tomorrow. Already have reservation at Wild Life Inn, same as last year.
This year I am going to bow to the inevitable and not signing up for the shooting, just a banquet ticket.
I do plan, though, to bring an odd assortment of firearms to play with while in camp. (I have a front stuffer Plains rifle I've been wanting to demonstrate my ineptitude with . . ., and a Govmnt .45 I'm working up a load using cast lead bullets.)

Oh, yes, and he should have been home 2 weeks ago ::)

Got my reservations at Wild Life Inn today. I think I got the last available room. Hopefully, I'll get my registration off by the end of the weekend, and there will still be openings for the match. If not, I'll work in a support role.
-
Several weeks ago I was asked for a list of officially registered participants. Here's what I have so far:
Pitspitr
J Dawg
Neiderlander
Ltc. Long
Mike Schroeder
Broken Nose Scotty
Coy Wolf
Good Troy
River City John
Kit Peak
Bat
Quickfire
Capt. Little
Sagebrush Burns
Dr. Demento
Johnson Barr
Oklahoma Tom
Scruffy Skip
Wooly Dan
Dutch Al
Drydock
Dusty Tagalon
Rattlesnake Jack Robson
Col. Diamond
Silver Creek Slim
Cactus Rope
Trinity Iron Wrangler
There are Several more from whom I have not officially received a registration, but that I am fairly sure are attending. Then there are several more who have expressed interest, but I'm not at all sure they are really all that interested so we could pretty easily be pushing the cutoff mark.
-
General Pitspitr: I am still in a "wait and see" mode here-once again I have NO SUBSTITUTE carrier for my route- as in, none at all! Not even one on another route I can "borrow" like I did last year. The post office created 2 new routes, and both the girls that know my route, now have their own routes.
-
I sure hope they get a sub lined up for you
-
My registration is going in the mail in the morning.

I picked up my primary for the match. An 1863 carbine conversion in 50/70.

Just a reminder that the registration fee will increase next Monday, so get them sent in soon.

I'm still going try a make this year. I talked to you at the april shoot that unfortunately done to my father in-laws cancer , I won't know until a day or two before shoot if I can make it. I'll stay in touch as to weather or not the shoot is full.

Be sure to bring some Full power loads, sounds like Ned is a big fan of big recoil! I could bring some full power .458 Magnums. Those would work as a medium load in a .450 Express right? Hope to see you there.

I've got some FULL HOUSE loads 500gr. running 2100fps, and a few 480 gr. factory. I sure hope things work out , really want to make it this year.

I spoke with Roxanne at the lodge and she said that she has had some cancellations the weekend of the Muster, so there are rooms available and we will be doing ribs at the banquet this year.
-
That ought to get messy.
-
Yeah, I might need to re-think wearing my 1895 White Summer/Tropics uniform.
-
Thanks for the heads up on the ribs...maybe I should wear a "bib" shirt!
-
Hi, I hope its not too late to order a Maroon shirt for dinner... I was going to be sure I was at least sort of good at this before I spend amy more $, but its important to color coordinate with your favorite food groups...
White Tropical is o.k. for ranch dressing....

I may have to miss dinner. BBQ sauce and I don't get along. It's not that I don't care for it, something in most sauces makes me ill.

I plan on arriving in the afternoon on Monday, there will be meals if anyone needs one after that and I will also keep my phone close and hang if some get lost and needs help.
My # is 402-432-0339 if I don't answer leave a message. Sometimes I have my hands in dough or something and can't grap it real quick.

Truck is loaded !!!!! I'm coming to Neb. !!! Father in-law is doing good, so I'm going to make the Muster. I'll be out Thursday afternoon/evening . Thanks so much for keeping a spot open for me . Let Delmonico know I'll need meals starting Thursday supper through Sunday breakfast, I'll bring cash for him. I'll also have my entry paperwork with me, and settle with you when I arrive .

No problem, wanted to be ready by now, had a no call no show at work and didn't get home till about 3 am, will be on site later today, just not sure when. Not saying I ain't going to lay down and nap a bit before I leave when it's loaded.
-
Went better than expected, am leaving the home station.
Jeff at Hillis 66 saved the day, don't lock the gas cap when I put it in Jeff locked it last time I filled, realized the only gas cap key was on the ring that got lost. Anyway Jeff picked the lock with a big channel lock, won't lock now. ::)
-
Doesn't look likely I'll make it, as far as I know right now, I don't have anyone available to cover me on Friday. If something did open up at this point, it'd just be "grab a bunch of stuff and go". Will start planning for the Dept of Missouri Muster now.

Will miss seeing you this year, Pony Express.

Yes, we did!
I will get my report out in the next few days, but until then; we set a new participation record with 31 shooters. We'd have had about 35 is some last minute cancelations hadn't occurred.
If you are considering staying at the Comstock Lodge., don't wait too long to make reservations. I know at least one room was booked Saturday night for next year's muster, which will be the last weekend in June once again.

Good pics Troy. Was very enjoyable meeting you and Many Horses. Had a great time at a great shoot. Ken ( Whiskey Double) has already bought a new/different rifle and is making plans to return next year. Hopefully I can get a couple of others to tag along. This is easily the favorite shoot of the year for me. Camels, baby ducks, vintage uniforms/weapons and bugs bunny- you can't find it anywhere else. Al

Colorful is the term I tend to use.
