Broken Hand
« on: November 11, 2021, 05:17:23 PM »
First time I've broken a hand in a '51 Navy (Uberti).  I've broken quite a few springs over the years, but never had a hand actually snap in two before!

Snapped off right above the pivot point.

First time I heard of it!  Were you pulling hard on the hammer, like if the cylinder was binding?

Maybe you can just JB Weld the pieces back together.  ;D

Nope, not binding at all.  Just decided it didn't want to play anymore!

Hmmmm .  .  .  new production ?  Stress from the cut for the spring or from the hole if a separate pin?  I've seen one with a longitudinal crack right in the center on the back side (hey!! Just realized .  .  .  musta been a buttcrack!!)!  Anyway, don't know if it was from production or my heat treat.

I be some flummoxed myself.  Worked on a pile of SAs of all sorts.  Broken hand springs?  You betcha, lots of those.  Broken hand?  Nope.  Never seen one.  Just source up a new one.

Not really that big a surprise, considering it's me.  I've broken an M1, an M14, a Remington 870, and a Ruger Vaquero, to name a few.  I'll just put a new hand in it.  I'd never heard of one breaking, either, though I've broken hand springs over the years.  I'd installed a Ruger spring and plunger to solve that problem.

I guess I am, but as a friend pointed out, mostly I just USE them a lot.  (Unfortunately, though, not as much now as in the past.)

More of my gunsmithing "prowess".  Yesterday I adjusted the arbor and drilled the frame for the hand spring and plunger on my other '51 Uberti Navy.  Got it reassembled, everything looks good, but I notice the front sight is loose.  Pulled it out with my fingers so I could Loctite it in, and of course dropped it.  Don't think I'll ever find it back.  Oh well, I've been meaning to put dovetailed front sights on those Navy's anyway!
