Swapping Colt Clone Base Pin
« on: November 12, 2008, 12:23:13 PM »
Yesterday I purchased a used (unfired) EMF Bisley, unsure of manufacturer. The box is marked "Bisley Model Dakota". Anyways, the cylinder base pin is made to where you put the hammer on 1 click, and push the base pin in for a safety. The pin has a red dot on it, and a little pull coming out at 90 degrees. Well, i dont care for it, and would like to replace it with a standard base pin.
I went on MidwayUSA, and saw a blue Peacemaker Parts base pin in stock. Should this work?

Thanks yall

The manufacturer's name should be on the underside of the barrel.

The EMF Dakota's have been made by more than a couple of manufacturers. If yours is an ASM (Armi San Marco) then it should (YES SHOULD) be 100% Colt interchangeable.

That being said I have yet to run into a problem with interchanging any base pin from gun to gun (be it Uberti, Colt, ASM, etc). BUT............the pin you describe is a Jager base pin and I have had a few Jager's that have a slightly longer pin. The "Colt" pin you describe should still work, it may leave a small gap behind the hammer if your gun is a Jager this would be purely cosmetic :)

If you dont want to spend moola, I'll send you a later type ASM pin. I have a drawer full.....Just email me yer address:

buckoff@alltel.net

This pin will still have the two notches but it will for all intensive purposes look the same as a Colt as long as you grind the other end down. This will make yer "safety" inoperative and you do so at yer own risk! ::)

Thanks for the info, and i sure appreciate the offer, but I already ordered a pin a few hours ago. If it doesnt work, i might take u up on the offer, however.
My main complaint with the factory pin is that it is difficult to return to "fire". also, the knurling on the pin gets kinda stuck in the frame hole. And i dont like that little pin coming down at 90 degrees.
I emailed "EMF" yesterday asking for a manufacture date, havent heard back. The salesman said he thought it was from the 1960's, i dunno. Its in a plain cardboard box with a green end label. Came with instruction manual, warranty card, etc. Looks unfired. Got it for $245.
Any rough guestimate when it might have been made? I dont see any current colt clones with this type of base pin anymore.

Is the grip frame brass? I have not (or do not remember) the Bisley Jager but the plowhandle has a brass grip frame.

The pin you ordered will most likely be fine.

Some of the Jager pistols do not say Jager on them but they should still have "proof" marks that should correspond to the date of manufacture. They should be on the right side of the frame above the trigger and below the cylinder. Look here at this pdf it might help:

Sounds like a good price.........I see by yer avatar you are computer savvy, so how about posting a pic or two?

Thanks for that link, it will come in handy.
the bottom of the barrel reads "Adler-Italy", so i recon Adler is the manufacturer, although ive never heard of them. However, it is possible that i dont know everything. :o

oh, and no, its not a brass grip frame. its all just std. blue/casehardened.

I have a "Jaeger" Dakota SAA that i bought new nearly 25 years ago.  It had the same base pin safety.  I swapped an original colt SAA base pin into it with no problems.

Howdy Gents

I bought a Jaeger Intercontinental Dakota back in 1966, in 45 long Colt 4 5/8" barrel, with walnut grips and case hardened frame, great gun and I liked it so much I replaced my second generation Colts with it, it shot straight and didn't shoot loose like my Colt SAA's did, I never had a problem with the base pin, it was tight but functioned well, even after fireing thousans of rounds through it, hers a picture of mine. ??? ::) :o ;D

Well the proofmark indicates 1993 manufacturer, which is just a tad newer than expected.
The box says "Bisley Dakota", but the top of the barrel says "Hartford CT model", even though it is a bisley.

Glad it worked out for ya! I wanted to say YES it would but the way my luck runs you'd have some strange one off thing that EMF imported and then be upset :(

By the way I have a couple of Jager marked Dakota's. One in 357 and one in 44-40, both SAA plow handles. If you ever need a playmate for that Bisley.
