casting about for a 40 60
« on: December 04, 2022, 10:46:26 AM »
I got the itchies for one now.  ;D So far I can't even get on the trail for a 40 60 I know they quit building them, but they all seem to have vanished. How many years ago did Uberti quit making them?  After reading all the info hear I'm a little leery of looking for a Chiappa. I might even consider an original with a bad bore in 40 60 and having a liner put in it.....
If anyone sees one out in the wild could you please give me a heads up?

Here you go -- scratch that itch with $2899+.  The only issues (from what I can see) are a missing dustcover screw and possibly little to no rifling.  The rest of the rifle looks decent besides needing some good cleaning.

Not connected to the sale -- Just been searching for a reasonable one (even a Chapparal) myself.

Can’t help in your quest for that particular chambering, I’m afraid, but can offer my two bits on tha Chapparal issue.  Although mine is in the correct .45-75 for its NWMP carbine configuration, I have not suffered from any of the quality-control problems reported by some others.  Might have something to do with it apparently being one of the first ten NWMP models they made (sixth, based on their sequential use of the known Winchester serial numbers for originals) and it certainly has the accuracy they are known for.

Before I’d bid on this auction I’d get some clarification on picture number 9.

It for all the world looks like there’s a crack in the rear tang.

Here is a different Winchester 76, been on gun broker for quite awhile tho. Shortened barrel to 22", which is a dang sight handier than 28".

Yep, saw that too. There's a couple coming up at the RIACO auction this weekend. I'll drive over there this thursday and have a look in person.

Mine is from the same batch of 10. No problems, and shoots to the sights with the proper settings on the "Spanish metre" sights at 100, 200 and 300, when I hold a very fine bead

I won a “long range” (out to 300 yards, maximum distance at our range) black powder cartridge event with mine, competing against some decent shots using single-shot rifles.  Gongs at 100, 200 & 300 yards … shot until you got a hit at 100, then same at 200, andf finished off the allowed rounds at 300 … most hits at 300 won.  My memory is a bit foggy on the details but, as I recall, I only needed one shot at each of the first two.

How many 40 60's do you suppose Uberti Made? Couldn't have been many. Scarce as hen's teeth these days.

You must have gotten the very last or hidden one.  I called a day or two later and they did not even acknowledge having had one.

Now I am in a full out search for one.

The end of the box says "DISCOUNTINUED MODEL". Looks like new old stock or something cimarron dumped on BACO. Anyway, I don't think we'll ever see any new '76's in 40 60.

In only have the trifecta now. Standard rifles in 50 95, 45 60 and 40 60. We're in the middle of a typical Mid western blizzard at the moment, I don't expect the mail lady to come down our road till after Christmas, so my dies won't be here till next week. :'(
Anybody have a Uberti 40 60? I'm wondering about twist and bullet diameter and weight. I have a lyman mold that throws a .406 @ 248grs. that I'll be trying first. I'm thinking these guns aren't likely to have a 1 in 40 twist like the originals.
Of course I could slug the bore and figure the twist myself.....but that would mean going outside in the blizzard to get to my shop. :o  I ain't as tough as I used to be. ;D
