What hat is this?
« on: October 14, 2022, 11:43:53 PM »
Howdy Cowboys and gals. First post here but long time lurker on the forum and been shooting CAS for about 5 years now. Was watching the Netflix western Justice and the main character played by Nathan Parsons is wearing a hat I like the look of. It's a pinch front, but not quite a Gus, with a fairly flat sloped brim. Anyone know who makes the hat or one like it? Picture attached. Thanks in advance!

All you need is a felt hat and a steam kettle (tea kettle) to make that look. Get a good stream of steam coming out of the spout and put the part of the hat in that stream. In a moment press the felt to shape and move to the next spot. Let cool and there you go! If the mirror doesn’t look good then redo it till it is. This one started out with the standard ranch supply shape and the steaming was done by hand.

Send Dave Johnson at D-Bar-J hats a copy of this photo and start up a conversation with him about what grade and color of hat you might want.   I've learned that often a hatter has to begin with the shape of the part of the hat that contacts your head to achieve the look you want.   In other words, it's not always as easy as steaming a hat you already have to achieve the shape you want.

While there are many good hat makers, nobody makes better hats than Dave.  Nobody.
