My hammer is falling and I can't get up.
« on: May 15, 2017, 01:19:55 PM »
Pardon my silly but my tried and true franken1911 Colt has developed an issue. The hammer occasionally drops to the half cock notch when the slide is dropped from slidelock. It doesn't do this when the slide is racked to chamber a rd or when it's fired. Do I need a new leaf spring or sear? I will tear it down tonight, check things and clean it real good. I've got WB matches for the next two weekends, can't wait. So I need to get it right. Push comes to shove I can always fire up my new retro Colt WW1 1918 1911. While I have shot it in matches in the past I don't want to mess it up so I built my Essex/Colt years ago. Appreciate the help.

My money is in a worn sear.

I just tore it down and nothing looks weird, edges look sharp, nothing chipped but 'replace the cheapest part first ' so I will order a sear and sear spring from midway this week. The wide spur hammer is original GI so I would hate to have to try to replace it. In fact other than the sear, disconnector, link, pin, grips, grip screws? and essex frame it's all GI. The bbl is marked HS but don't know if that makes it a ww1 or 2 bbl. The slide is ww1 vintage for sure.

My money would be on a worn Sear or the Full Cock ledge on the hammer.  You did inspect these parts under a nice powerful magnifying glass .......... right???

Got a brand new sear and sear spring over the weekend and installed them.  The pistol seems to be all right now with no issues. I've only shot a few mags so far but the trigger feels fine. If it's not too hot in 3 weeks I'll do another WB match then and report back. Thanks guys.
