New Tommy Gun!
« on: March 18, 2018, 09:08:09 PM »
It cost me a C96 Mauser Broomhandle, but tomorrow I pick up an A-O 1927 Tommy with the 100 round mag! I've always loved both versions of the Tommy and never thought I would own either, but now I have both! WOOHOO!

Thank you! Yeah, with having to use the Third Hand piece, I'm wondering if I won't be better running stick mags! Also, trying to figure out if I would be better off trading the 100 round drum for a couple of 50s. Any suggestions or observations will be welcome.

I only have a 50 round drum, But I can say that I like the sticks better. Not only are they quicker to change, but my drum seems to jam a lot.

The drums work much better with FMJ ammo.  If you're using lead bullets sticks are the only way to go.

On the other hand the drum is the cat's meow when you're getting your picture taken, I think of my drums as expensive photo props.

Thanks for the input! Hopefully I can work out a trade for that 100 round beast, looks great, but I like the 50s better. And I will just use the sticks for actual shooting.

I found that out the hard way and seldom shoot FMJ.

You guys have been great in your help. On another, less pleasant topic, I started a backup AZSA page on Gunbook in case Facebook gets really crazy.  https://www.airgunbook.com/Americanzootshootersassociation

Since you won't show us yours I'll show you mine. It's a .45 acp with a Cutts comp, finned bbl and all Thompson wood. Close but no cigar. And a lot of fun to shoot.

Ed,

That looks like an AR style buffer spring tube the stock is attached to, is it?  The more I look at it, that's a modified AR receiver as well.

That's a new one on me as well, who made it and what do they cost?

Bat, you are most correct sir and I built it. It's a DPMS slickside upper, a CNC Enterprises dedicated greasegun mag lower, Olympic Arms bolt and barrel, a WW2 Cutts compensator from Belgium and Thompson wood. It took forever to find a guy to machine the fins into the bbl. My buddy used his mini lathe to drill and tap the Cutts so that it screwed onto the bbl. The bbl threads are inside of the Cutts. I had a local custom moulding wood shop router the buttstock for the buffer tube extension. I inlet the grip onto the lower and built the gripmount for the vertical grip. There also was a bunch of tinkering with buffer springs as the extension is shorter than normal. There is a shroud on the bbl nut now. The drum is from an airsoft gun with the guts removed and a cutdown greasegun mag installed. Overall, this build took a few years.

Very nice Tommy there Deacon, especially like the Luger in the pix. A neat toy for a Zoot Shooter.I put 100 rds through a M3 WW2 Thompson at an indoor range in Maryland a few years ago before my Tommy build. It was a lot of fun so I started looking around for one. I found a rebuild sbr in Texas but didn't jump. As I had built a forward charger .45 SBR I decided to build my own version of a Thompson. Not as nice as yours but a one of for sure.

Resected old thread  :-X

Yesterday's visit to my friendly LGS ... netted this find > early West Hurley 1927 A5

I hesitated a year & 1/2 ago on a Karr 1927 rifle , as the bean count in my sock drawer could not reach the asking price.
It sold before I got the added scratch... such is the way it goes  :-\

this time, the planets aligned .... Price was great  8)  , I had the ducks in the drawer ...boom ! done
when planets align...do the deal !

Good thing that you didn’t get the Kahr. I’ve read about a lot of negative issues. The older AO WH guns are better but still need tweaking.

I think, it was a post from you,  Pittspiter or someone on the Zoot BB that mentions Karr unreliability ...I retained the mention but not the actual issue .
When I saw this was an West Hurley I was pleased...

Thanks for the support from all , 1/2 the fun is the learning

Machinegunboards can answer any questions you might have as they have a sub forum just about AO and Kahr guns. Even though mine was used it still had the too stiff oem dual recoil springs. I replaced mine and added the buffer which made it tons easier to operate. Got rid of the huge bolt knob in favor of the more correct checkered ball.
