Tell me about boots.....
« on: February 02, 2013, 10:29:39 AM »

The SASS rulebook simply says that boots need to be of a traditional design. Just what do the rules committee members consider “traditional”? Are exotic leathers allowed, i.e. ostrich, snake, lizard, etc.? Are pointy toes allowed, you know the cockroach-in-the-corner stompers?  How much, if any, fancy stitching is allowed? Hmmm... I guess that in "B" Western that would be, how much is required?

Actually except for CC and B Western, boots, nor any footwear for that matter, are not required.

I think for sass, other than Classic Cowboy orB-western, probably any boots besides modern combat/tactical or hiking boots would work. Even plain old lace up work boots have been around since pre-1900, as long as they don't have the molded on soles, you know, the ones that look like tennis shoe soles on boots.

WOW! Look at the money I can save! I'll just paint my feet with a snakeskin pattern.

This is Half aa Hand Henri, one of the top lady shooters in SASS. I have been on the same posse and watched her shoot for years. Very gracious lady and a lots of fun. I believe she is a Lady Senior now. Sand, dirt, gravel, crushed rock doesn't aze her. Hurts me to watch.

Yep, in that photo she is standing in grass.  She's been in Arizona for the past few months getting ready for Winter Range.  Never wears shoes or boots even in the rocks on our local ranges.  She is a hoot and one of the top shooters in SASS.

Wonder how she deals with the bullheads that were a bain to my existance back in my flat tired bicyle days. Two 1/4 -3/8 inch thorns sticking out of what resembles a cow's skull for those who have not experienced them.  Shape makes them like a caltrop always having a thorn sticking up.

Hi

Rather than start a new thread, I'll just jump on the back of the wagon here.

I plan on ordering a pair of boots from Missouri boot and shoe.  I've worn brogans a little, and I wear cowboy boots a lot, but I've NEVER put the pants leg down the boots like they did back in the day.  How much do I need to add on the boot width?  Do I need to order pants that are thinner in the leg at the bottom?

I also need to work out what socks to wear with the boots.  What brand socks actually stay up?

Thanks

Not everyone put their pants into their boots back then. In fact most did not. If you plan to tuck your pants, measure your calf with your pants on.

A lot of it depended on where you were at as to tuck or not.  If you are where stuff ends up in the tops it's a bad idea, if you need a bit of brush protection for you pants it's a good idea.

If you are wearing them just because ... Pants in or out would be a personal choice.

If re-enacting or creating a persona then ...
Townie, pants out
Mule skinner pants in and boot straps
A low life Cowboy pants in or out boots no straps.

How's that for generalization.  ;D

Not that this has anything to do with the original subject but......

I was watching for the 1000th time the movie "the good, the bad and the ugly"........just noticed for the first time the scene where Tuco and Blonde are waiting out the artillery barrage before the yankees and rebs fight over the bridge......
The yankee soldier extra in the background, ducking incoming had his leg stretched out and it showed he was wearing full leather combat boots, current issue for the modern military of the 1960's...........I recognized this as I sold this type boot thru the DoS for the African Union Army two years ago.
I guess it don't matter what your footwear is.........

Does a lot of the cloth at the hem end up bunched around your ankles inside the boot?  Del, just walking around the range here in OKC was messy enough.  If I do get to start shooting GAF, I think I'll either need the pants tucked in or really splurge and buy chaps.  No horse, so I'm having trouble with the chaps idea.

I seemed to recall that some sort of Regular Army troops were used as extras, so it is not surprising
that on the low budget of the Spaghett Western the extras would be wearing their own issue shoes/boots
that actually fit.....

If you're going to shot with GAF it would depend where you shoot, and what sort of outfit you're going for. If it's midsummer, then around where I live, walking around with pants tucked into your boots in the pasture will get you a bunch of grass seed in your boots. But if it's early morning, wear them outside, they'll get soaked from the dew. When I wore mine inside, I would pull the extra cloth tight and sort of fold it over, not just stuff it all down in there. Or you could wear shoes with leggings that will keep out the seeds.

1961MJS, instead of chaps have you considered Botas?

Here is a pair by Chuck Burrows.
