In the Rough Riders Photo with TR in the middle the guy directly to the right of TR wearing a light colored shirt and hat seems to have a double loop holster with a handgun that I can't identify. Does anyone have any ideas?

Er... Don't you mean to the left of TR?
I'd like to known winch pistol is it also. ???
-
My first guess would be a C-96.
Second and/or third would be a S&W #3, second or third model.
My best,

Looks like one of the Colt double actions to me, either .38 or .41. They were actually pretty popular then.
-
I meant by TR's right side ;D. I thought that the non regulation holster was interesting also. Was there a lot of that with the Rough Riders?

I don't know how common, but it WAS done, even in the regular cavalry. Page 31 of "Packing Iron" shows a 6th Cavalry trooper wearing one in the 1880's.

Not only you meant it, but you said in your first post. T'was me who was dumb. :-[

A C96 it is not. Seems to big for a S&W.
I'm starting to think 1878 Colt double action, .45 Colt or .44-40.
-
Thanks for the replies men. I knew through research that a lot of non regulation items were used in the 70's and 80's but I had no idea that they were used in the 90's.

I to would lean toward the C96.

I downloaded the 49.5 Meg picture from the LOC and this is the best I can do, looks like a round butt of some kind.
-
It look rounded to me too, Del. I'm starting to lean towards the Colt double action myself.

I'm going to play some more, maybe I can bring it out better changing colors.
-
I can see a full round trigger guard and no magazine on it in this one.
-
I'd go for the Colt 1878 DA. Someone wanted a 45 Double Action.
-
Drydock could be right, but it could be a 77 Thunderer also.

Top as it appears today, bottom redone back to B&W.
-
The grip seems a little small to be the 1878. Del, can you get it in the frame with the single action next to it?
-
Yep..
-
I'm guessing this one?
-
A few other oddities that I noticed in the picture are that TR seems to be wearing a pullover sweater type shirt. The same gent that has the unknown handgun does not have a regulation shirt or hat and the guy sitting below TR has leather leggings on.

His shirt does look knit.
Guy with the leather leggings has go a fairly pointed boot, about what I've come to know as the latest style in the 1890's but some say they were later period.
Also I like the guy who said the heck with it and wore a wool cap.
-
Anyone see anything else hollor, I'm keeping both full size copies in my files.
-
Good eye Del. I can't believe I missed the cap. I did see the boots when I first saw the picture but the holster and gun on the standing guy made me forget about them. There also seems to be quite a few hats that weren't the prescribed color, but maybe they changed color due to getting wet or something.

No way this one was ever a reg hat.

Well...
It looks like he has shoulder boards on his shirt and for officers the hat regs. say, "Of black or drab felt, according to pattern, to be worn in the field, and in garrison only on fatigue duty and at target practice."
-
I think I see Waldo in this photo!
-
Delmonico, do you have a link for the high resolution photo?

I guess I should have said issue. ;)
