| My Chosen Alias
(The story behind and how I picked it): |
As a former Civil War reenactor I began to consider my character with a view of what happened to him after the war...
P.J. King is a former Union Artillery Officer and West Point graduate (Class of 61) who began service in the summer of 1861 with the Army of the Potomic. He commanded several 12 lb. Napoleon batteries with the 2nd Corps under Hancock and centered the gun line at Gettysburg with two 3" Ordinance Rifle batteries and was mentioned in dispatches.
He served as a breveted Major with Grant in the final campaign against Robert E. Lee and commanded a gun line on the right flank of the Union forces at Petersburg before leaving for the valley with Sheridan. He was breveted to Colonel after Five Forks.
After the war he joined the U.S. Cavalry and began serving in the Dakotas with the 7th Cavalry in late 1866 as a Captain. He commanded a company of troopers and two mountain howitzers. His troopers called him Capt. Pejay after his initials.
After nine years he retired from the Army with the full rank of Major in 1880, and settled in the Hill Country of Texas where he bought his ranch. It was 2,950 acres and had a good stream, small lake, and bluebonnets in the Spring. His brand was the Lazy K. Over time some folks in town called him The "Yank Major," but his friends called him LazyK Pejay. His ranch hands, some who were former troopers, still call him "Capt. Pejay." However, his cook "Gunner Sams," who served with him at Gettysburg, and now serves as the drive cook always calls him Captain King.
You can spot him in his felt cavalry hat turned up front & back with gold officers cord. He always wears a white shirt and his blue Union vest. He carries a single Colt and has a Spencer rifle by the fireplace.
He has a quality education and spends his time out of the saddle writing at his old field desk. He works on his war memoirs while sipping at two fingers of Bulleit bourbon. If you stop to visit you can be sure you will get a sip of Kentucky's finest, a rocker on the on the long veranda, and stories about great men and battles.
From time to time you can see him and Ms. Sharon McGaveny (she owns the town newspaper) riding through the valley near sunset when there are blue shadows on the trail. Some say they are made for each other. He says, "She is a sweet woman, and seems to enjoy my company." Ms. McGaveny, well she just smiles... |
